The New York Rangers have made their selection to replace Chris Drury as the team's next captain, giving Ryan Callahan the honor of wearing the C. Marc Staal and newcomer Brad Richards were selected as the alternates.

"Ryan Callahan embodies all the leadership qualities we seek from our Captain," Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather said. "He leads by example with courage and tireless work ethic on and off the ice, which is why he is so deserving of this honor."

Callahan was the odds-on favorite to take over the lead role. He has been wearing the A since October of 2009. There was some wondering if Richards would be considered, but based on the fact he hasn't dressed in a Rangers sweater on the ice yet, his shot seemed long.

Born in Rochester, N.Y., Callahan is the second straight American-born captain for the Blueshirts after Drury, who hails from Connecticut, held the title. Callahan is only the third American to be named captain of the Rangers.

"It's a privilege & an honor ... I'll approach it the same as wearing the A ... it's a bit of a surreal feeling," Callahan said.

Callahan had his best point total last season despite playing in only 60 games for New York. He scored 23 goals and had 25 assists all while suffering through a broken hand mid-season and a broken ankle that ended his season in Game 79.

At just 26 years old, Callahan has the chance to wear the C for a long time to come, starting with the next three years after signing an extension with the Rangers this offseason.

and mcdonagh is on the team, so we have 3 prospects, 1 of whom is Zuccarello, and we all saw that, he's not an nhl player, he belongs in Europe. I look forward to Kreider playing, as he seems like a sure thing from what I saw in person, but we dont have studs coming up, as others have stated, our system isnt loaded, unless sather says it is, and our defense has eminger and del zotto are our 5th and 6th defensemen, so we must pray for no injuries and deal with 2nd year defensemen, hence the reason they are 16th on odds to win the cup..the favorite doesnt always win, but they come up with this number based on perceived talent, and are a mediocre team as it is in need of a new gm and 2 defensemen

also, gravchev was traded for a 3rd round pick, yes, someone in our top 5 traded for that..this is not updated info you have..and they are listed as 16th in odds to win the cup, and predicted for 4th place in their own division, yes, even behind the Devils..look for this updated info, as it is all current..behind the Devils, thats sad..stop believing new york papers, nyrangers, com, and ranger broadcasters to back them. I wish they were closer to a cup, but the truth is they are selling mediocrity, and they need bigger, more experienced defensemen, 2 of them, or this will be a typical season, while I wish for more

Candy, actually Rangers are listed as having the 7th best minor league system... Here you guy bro:

Strengths: The Rangers have excellent forward prospects, led by 2009 first round draft selection Chris Kreider. In addition to three diminutive snipers, including Chris Thomas, Ryan Bourque and Mats Zuccarello, the Rangers also have Carl Hagelin and Roman Horak, each of whom is expected to be a third-line contributor. New York's recent drafting and one trade with Montreal in 2009 have also brought some excellent defensive prospects into the organization, with Ryan McDonagh already contributing at the NHL level, and Pavel Valentenko and Tomas Kundratek no more than a year away
Top 5 Prospects: 1. Chris Kreider, LW, 2. Ryan McDonagh, D, 3. Christian Thomas, RW, 4. Evgeny Grachev, C, 5. Mats Zuccarello, LW. Lost to graduation: Derek Stepan, Michael Sauer.

santa, stop listening to nyrangers.com...they are not loaded with future studs, as their "farm" system is ranked 14th...kreider is promising, and if mcilrath develops hes a decent player at best, some toughness, but what studs are you talking about?..bourque, thomas, miller?..or erixon?..you need to watch hockey news or tsn..youre a puppet believing whatever strings the rangers are pulling

Are you talking about Mr October, Dubinsky?  Dude disappears in the second half of the season.  Has every year.
