We knew Thursday was going to be a big day for Brendan Shanahan to see how he would handle the Jody Shelley incident from Wednesday's Flyers-Maple Leafs game, when the Philadelphia forward was ejected for boarding Toronto's Darryl Boyce.

Just hours after Shanahan appeared in a video describing the five-game suspension he issued to Calgary's Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond, it was announced that Shelley will be suspended for what amounts to 10 games -- the final five games of the preseason and the first five games of the regular season.

He won't be eligible to return to the Philadelphia lineup until Thursday, Oct. 20 when the Flyers host the Washington Capitals.

The incident occurred midway through the second period when Boyce chased the puck into the Flyers zone and was then sent into the glass with a high hit from behind by Shelley. The play resulted in a five-minute major penalty as well as a game misconduct.

As he did earlier in the day to announce the first suspension under his watch, Shanahan again appeared in a video describing the incident (the description of the play was nearly identical to the first one) and all of the factors that went into his decision. In this instance, Shanahan explained that he took into consideration that Boyce was injured on the play, as well as the fact that Shelley was suspended twice last season to reach the decision to suspend him for the remainder of the preseason as well as the first five regular season games.

Jody Shelley gets 10 game suspension

I think the NHL desperately needs a top 6 forward or a top 4 dman to be suspended for 10 games, that might be just enough to get everybody's attention.
This is as ignorant as if it was a goon because the first guy suspended that falls in this catigory everyone will say he got off easy because he is a good player or Shanahn will be worried about a backlash from the owners that pay his bosses paycheck   He is serius and the players know it deosnt matter who it is. He has to make an impresion but not at the sake of the commish gettig an earful from his cronies. Bettman nos where his bread is buttered

I agree, and I would love to see well over 10 for Wiz.   I think this is his first "real" statement to the league, I don't think even that hack Campbell would have done much different with Shelley or Lebadat-LaHockey.

We don't know what Shanahan is doing yet, no conclusions to be drawn.   The Lebad-Labrickhands-Lecantskategood suspension was pretty fluffy for a guy who was suspended only a few NHL appearances ago for ignoring a rule.   He also doesn't contribute much to hockey other than fighting for the sake of fighting.    No owner is going to make a stink about a marginal 4th line/healthy scratch type getting a suspension for something illegal.  Let's hold judgement on Shanahan until he has to deal with this stuff with teams' top 6 forwards and top 4 d-men and owners, presidents, and gms start applying a little pressure.   Then we'll get a better idea.

Hockeybob. I agree with what you're saying, we don't know what Shanahan is doing quite yet.  BUT, I have to say that in my opinion Shanahan is off to a good start.  He just set a precedent that's going to be tough to ignore later on.  That being said I love the precedent he set and I hope he's consistent throughout the whole NHL season.   I think the NHL desperately needs a top 6 forward or a top 4 dman to be suspended for 10 games, that might be just enough to get everybody's attention.

Redwing, I wasnt defending Shelley. I was questioning the 10 game suspension for the hit, which wasnt that bad.

I would have givn him 5 games. Didn't look as bad as people were tellling me before I saw it. Had this been a guy that isnt willing to face the music after they do soemthing like that then I would have had more of a problem with it. The Avery and Cooks of the league are worse to me because they run when confrontd. After the hit Rosehil took care of busines and Shelly might think twice the next time knowing that. Let the players police themselves

Is it that Brendan Shanahan that climbed the glass as a rook going into the stands during a Devils game to fight a fan? Is that the Brendan Shanahan who gave out 10 games for a 2 minute minor now labeled the "Jody Shelley Incident"? Thats who we're talking about here? For a second there I thought this was the same Brendan Shanahan. Maybe its a different guy. The Shanahan I know would have let the players police themselves then continue on with their lives, he wouldn't jump the gun that early. That sets a crazy precedent. God only knows what guys like Cooke are in for.

10 games for that? What will it be when someone leaves their feet to crush a player, 50 games?

Sure.  It depends what you're talking about exactly but fifty games sounds fantastic to me, why not?  If Shelley would have left his feet to crush a guy from behind 2 feet away from the boards then yeah, 50 games would be awesome, especially for a repeat offender.

Jody Shelley is as useless as they come.  The guy averaged 6 minutes per game on the ice last season.  He had whopping 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points on the season with a grand total of 3 minutes for the season on the PP and basically zero on the penalty kill.  I know all some of you Flyers fans care about is fighting since you just can't let go of the "broadstreet bullies" teams but c'mon, don't you wanna win a Stanley Cup again one day in the near future?  Why do you want an idiot like that on your team anyway?  He's not going to win you many if any games at all.  The guy has 2 game winning goals in almost 600 games in his career for God sakes.  He doesn't play the special teams... he's nothing.   There isn't one thing except for fight the guy can do..... NOTHING.....  why are you defending him?
