Clarke MacArthur will be the latest player to make an appearance in a Brendan Shanahan discipline video, earning a two-game regular season ban for his hit on Detroit's Justin Abdelkader on Friday night during Toronto's 4-3 overtime win.

MacArthur had a disciplinary hearing at noon on Saturday, and it was determined at that point that it was, in fact, an illegal hit to the head.

This is what has drawn the attention of the NHL:

It's definitely not the worst hit we've seen this preseason, but it also appears that Abdelkader's head was the principal of contact.

MacArthur won't return to the Toronto lineup until Oct. 15 when they the Calgary Flames. According to an NHL release he will have to forfeit just a little over $35,000 in salary as a result of the suspension..

In his first year with the Maple Leafs last season he had a career year, scoring 21 goals to go with 41 assists in 82 games.

So at any given time there's only one person diving in the NHL and the Wings' management seeks him out? What a foolish comment.

Greg Louganis never had a dive as clean as that. I guess the Wings management had to replace Sean Avery with somebody.

I would like to ask the senior hockey fans out there if they feel that malicious hits on players has increased, since the institusion of the instigator rule?

With all of the suspensions being handed out, dont be suprised if embelishing contact becomes the norm.  Say what you will about fighting, but the institution of the instigator rule is the catalyst for the direction that the NHL is heading towards.

In its "we must do something" frame of mind, Shanny and the league might have a tendency to over react this season. Early on, that could be a good thing, in that it will, hopefully, establish a consistency of punishment for head hits.  But the nuances of rule 48.1 have the potential to put officials on the spot to do something even when it's unclear if the head was the principle point of contact or the reaction to the hit might have been an embellishment.

The MacArthur "hit" on Abelkader didn't look like much and Abby may have hammed it up for the call.  The officials gave them both the gate. Abby for cross checking and MacArthur for high sticking.  IMO, it is debatable if either infraction occurred on the play.
So, throughout this season the question will be:  Was it a blind side hit? Was the head targeted? Was the head the principle point of contact?
One thing is for sure, we can expect an increase in embellishments this year. And, optimistically, a decrease in head hits.

It was embellished and certainly wouldn't have been a problem in years past, but this is the "sending a message" portion of changing the game. The point is for players so pass up unnecessary checks away from the puck that have anything to do with the head. There are going to be some overly stiff penalties while this "message" gets out.

I was a little confused before but now I'm really confused,
You and me both, and worse, I thnk abut 900 or so players.
If you ain't cheating, you ain't trying.

Find me a pro athlete that won't embellish a play to gain and edge in any sport and you'll be showing me someone that doesn't want to win that badly.
Yep, I hate embellishing but I must give Abdelkader credit for situational awareness.
Players should start aiming at players ribs or uset the old spearing tactic
Lost art, I hope the players can rediscover it.
