The Washington Capitals aren't the only team that have a rather surprising opening night starter in the crease. When the Islanders open their regular season schedule on Saturday night against new-look Florida Panthers, it will be Al Montoya filling the net instead of veterans Rick DiPietro or Evgeni Nabokov.

Coach Jack Capuano said, via Newsday's Arthur Staple, that it's a "gut feeling" to go with the 26-year-old Montoya.

He appeared in 21 games last season for the Islanders and played better than anybody could have expected, posting a .921 save percentage and recording one shutout during the stretch run. He was one of six goaltenders to appear in a game for the Islanders last season, and his performance was probably the most surprising given how disappointing his career had been prior to joining the team.

A first-round pick by the Rangers in 2004, he never played a game for the blue shirts before being traded to Phoenix as part of a five-player trade during the 2008 season. The Islanders acquired him back in February after trading Dwayne Roloson to Tampa Bay and losing a number of other goalies to injury throughout the season. And now he's getting the opening night start, getting the call over the oft-injured DiPietro, who has appeared in just 39 games over the past three seasons, and Nabokov, who the Islanders claimed on waivers last season following his brief stint in the KHL.

Scythe you are an idiot.. read what i wrote.. there is NO issue with starting the kid. its the amount of salary they have in the other two goalies, this isnt a snap decision to start this kid it had to be in their minds for some time so they had to have time to move one of the other two.. the team BLOWS.. it has so so many needs.. you dont let that kinda of depth ROT on your bench when you have DIRE NEEDS.. next time you want to comment on my stuff.. have a leg to stand on..

Buying Dipietro out is ridiculous, you would pay him for twice the remaining length of his deal. Yoiure talking 20+ years, good insight into your own team Ted.

I get it, they need to see if Montoya was for real at the end of last season...but why even talk about Dipietro anymore. He wasn't great before injury nevermind now! This is a good young team, with abit of work on their D and solid goaltending, they can make some noise.

Nabokov hasn't done anything to earn a start. Who are you to question the teams moves. You aren't even an Islanders fan so what do you know other than the goalies name?

Absurd, not that they go with an unproven guy, but they play hardball with Nabokov, force him to honor his waiver claim and dont trade him or DiPietro the man with the longest and most rediculous contract in the history of the NHL for a goalie. This does nothing but show a team's commitment to flat out sucking year in and year out. Two solid goalies that could have spots in many teams just rotting for a rookie when your team needs pretty much everything. The financial commitment locked in these two non-playing goalies is enough to get someone fired.

Trade Nabokov to the Sharks. Their much-vaunted and highly praised netminders are injured. It must be the water from Finland that's making them brittle/fragile. You never ever hear of a Russian goalie missing any games for something trivial. Also, it was proven last year hat Nabokov was not the reason the Sharks made a quick exit in the playoffs two seasons ago. The Sharks just cannot score or play defense in the postseason. Don't get me started on the power play. The led the league in power plays during the regular season, but in the playoffs they are terrible.

Big Cubano is in net! I like it ALOT.

side note...Al Montoya is the first Cuban-American to play an NHL game.

Lets go Islanders!!!

I like it. Now Rick can add his feelings to what HURTS. Oh, well. Even more telling is who they go with Monday vs. Minn. Assuming Montoya doesn't get a shutout, will be interesting to see if Rick or Nobokov gets the call. Maybe tonight's backup will be a tip. Either way the offense needs to be better than past years.
