Sidney Crosby 'cleared for full contact'

By Brian Stubits

When Sidney Crosby took to the ice with his Penguins teammates on Thursday for their morning skate, something stood out. His helmet was the same black color as his teammates, meaning he has been cleared for contact. The change in helmet color was sign enough, but then Crosby confirmed it himself after the skate.

"I'm cleared for full contact, he said. "I've been good since around camp. Everything has gone really smooth."

This is a huge step in his recovery and now means we aren't that far from seeing him return to games -- relatively speaking. He has been taking part in team practices wearing a white helmet to signify no contact as he has been on a long road to recovery from a concussion suffered last January.

"When you've waited this long, you want to make sure you do everything right," Crosby said when asked if it is tough being patient. "It's exciting if anything. I don't think it's hard to be patient at this point. I'm getting closer and just want to make sure I respond to everything well here in the next however long it is."

Now, we still likely won't get a timetable for a return to playing. The Penguins will continue to do what they have been, and that's using patience and extreme caution. But I don't think there is any question that being cleared to hit and be hit was the biggest hurdle for him to clear physically.

"I thinks it's up to how I respond to getting hit, so I guess it's up to me," Crosby said. "We'll just have to see at that point.

"Its a big step but we'll see how things go. I've got to get hit in practice. Today wasn't hitting so it didn't feel any different. I've got to get hit here at some point during practice, but we're playing so much it's hard to get hit right now."

So who will be the first one to actually hit him? Your guess is as good as mine. I can't imagine any player will want to hit the star for fear of setting him back again. But coach Dan Bylsma thinks it won't be long before Crosby makes somebody want to hit him.

"Sid's the type of player that he instigates contact," Bylsma said. "He'll do something that will warrant that from a player. He'll go out and do something. ... I think every training camp when Sid's been healthy he's always ended up in some kind of jostling where the ire's gotten up on both guys and that'll happen again because of the way Sidney competes."

While his teammates have done their best to protect their captain during practice, Crosby has admitted to some jostling at times with no recurrence of the symptoms that have sidelined him since taking head shots in consecutive games in early January.

Bylsma says he may try to find some extra practice time for Crosby to help get him acclimated but added Crosby's participation in nearly every drill during training camp means Crosby might not have that much further to go.

"He's been with the line, he's been in drills, he's covered some drills that have contacted," Bylsma said. "He was wearing a different color helmet but he's been in those situations."

Sorry Jeremy Roenick, but expect to hear a lot more about Crosby after this development.

Sidney Crosby 'cleared for full contact'

Hate to get into a whos best debate but though he is a great player no doubt, he is not the "greatest by far and its not even close". He had an exceptional couple months last year that he truly was the best in the game. Other than that he has been very good but certainly not clearly the best. Therer is a guy in Washingtone that the players voted as the best a couple years in a row, while Crosby was playing and healthy. I think they know better than we do who is the best. And people dislike Ovechkin and target him just as much as Crosby, he is just a big boy and can take it....

I dont think you Penguins fans realize the severity of this injury. He is going to recluse if he makes it to the playoffs. All those hard hits, I am surprised people can walk after a game. He is going to need a lot of tylenol 4 come playoff time and he most likely wont be a factor along the boards. I wish him the best of health I just dont see him lasting too long in the NHL and especially crunch time like he has before. He was one hell of a hockey player and come playoff time he was even better. But that is over now.
nfceastfan....i do agree this is serious, but you and a lot of you seem to forget, you CAN come back from this and still play at a high level....example....Patrice Bergeron....he had a grade 3 concussion, the worst you can get. He missed the rest of that season, about 70 games, came back the next year, played 31 games and again got a concussion, not as serious but missed a month, came back again and well the rest is history. He's now back playing as great as he ever was...last year leading the Bruins to the cup, finishing tied for 3rd in playoff scoring as well as being one of the top defensive forwards and faceoff men in the game!!! Dont count Crosby out!!!

Strange. I thought Chris Ponger, reputation and all. treated Sidney Crosby with way more pro respect than "Master Butcher" Derian Hatcher. I do not recall cheap shot or over intense hit in my memory.

Finally! For better or worse. And I hope it's truly "over". I want to know whether or not his coconut can take a whack without going into automatic Lala Land. Best wishes Sid. Art Ross can still be yours today. Light years ahead of Sedin Sisters, Perry & worn-down Ovie...

If I am the Pens, I am holding him out till january 1. Until then... let him take hits in practice with guys who will hit him hard but not offer cheap shots,, Let his body and head get used to it again. Then around January 1, he should be ready to go.

As for the comment Sidney IS the best in the league. Not anymore! I agree he was the best for a few years. I dont think you Penguins fans realize the severity of this injury. Everyone plays him tough he is one of the best players in the league, it doesnt matter what team he plays all are going to try to knock him silly. He will have a repeat concussion. I hate Sissy Crosby but I dont like players bieng targets and victims of cheap shots. I think one good smash and hes done again for the year. Concussions easily come back. Once you get one you are very susceptible to recieve another. I think with the serious one he had he is one hit away from becoming the next Eric Lindros and I am pretty sure it will happen...

A road game in a city which hates Crosby against the red hot Flyers
Let's not get crazy now, its only been three games.  How bout we call them the "playing better than anticipated at this time Flyers"?

But you are right in that this will be a really good test for Sid.  Flyers ALWAYS play him tough.

Sidney Crosby 'cleared for full contact'

December 8th will tell all of us alot. The Pens  travel to the city of Brotherly Love for the next phase of a tremendous NHL rivalry. A road game in a city which hates Crosby against the red hot Flyers. There WILL be full contact, always has been and always will be. This will show us whether he is fully recovered or not. I hope so. He is great a pleasure to watch. The NHL would be deprived a great player and representative if his career is cut short.
