It appears as if getting tickets to the Jan. 2 Winter Classic is going to be a problem if you're not a Philadelphia Flyers or New York Rangers season ticket holder, or if you don't have a bank vault full of disposable income stashed away somewhere. And that shouldn't be a surprise. It also shouldn't be a surprise that casual fans are the ones that are likely to be left on the outside looking in for one of the biggest events of the season, seeing as how that's pretty much always the case when you're talking about one of the biggest games on the sports calendar.

Since its debut on New Years Day, 2008, the Winter Classic has become the signature event of the NHL season. When it first started with a game in Buffalo, nobody was quite sure what to expect for that game or future games, and the ticket demand, while large, wasn't anywhere near the monster it has become today. It's the one regular season game most fans want to watch and see in person, whether or not their favorite team is actually playing. Getting a ticket is darn near impossible, and gets harder every season.

This year's game, which will take place in Philadelphia and feature the Flyers hosting the Rangers at Citizens Bank Park, normally the home of the Philadelphia Phillies, is no exception.

Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer has an article on Monday talking about the problems fans-- particularly those of the hometown Flyers -- are facing when it comes to trying to score tickets to an event that has a limited supply and an overwhelming demand. According to Carchidi, the NHL gave the Flyers an allotment of 19,000 tickets, which should be just enough to cover their season ticket base as well as some partial season ticket holders.

One of the gripes Flyers fans seem to have at this point, and it is a legitimate gripe, is that along with the tickets to the Jan. 2 game, which cost anywhere between $79 and $349, they also have to purchase tickets to an alumni game, as well as a minor league game involving the Flyers' AHL team, the Adirondack Phantoms. He spoke to one season ticket holder that spent over $500 on tickets -- including service fees -- for a pair of tickets to each of three games ... two of which he didn't even want to attend (the alumni game and the minor league game). Why is the NHL doing this? Because it can. Because there is enough demand, and enough people willing to buy tickets to two games they don't want to see.

As a result of the incredible demand for seats and the limited supply at their disposal, the Flyers aren't expected to hold a public sale for tickets. That means the 45,000 seats will be mostly filled by Flyers season ticket holders, whatever allotment of seats the Rangers get, and a third group that consists of people that paid what will surely be absurd prices on the second-hand market.

Pleasing everybody for a game like this is impossible, and there's always going to be somebody that's left fuming because the process was unfair, which it no doubt is. And as is the case with any marquee event in sports, the casual fan, the one with the family of four that just wants to take the kids to an outdoor hockey game, or the die-hard that sits in the nosebleeds for regular games and knows the name and number of every player that's dressed for the team over the past two decades, is going to be the one that gets left out. And if you're surprised by that you must be new to sports. It's not fair and it's not right, but that's not how it works for these types of games.

The NHL -- or any league -- isn't in the business of making sure the right fans get tickets to the right games. It's in the business of making money, and the Winter Classic is the biggest money-maker it has during the regular season.

Adambomb,

Nobody likes paying for anything they don't want, it's tough to wrap it up into a political or social context but go ahead I guess.
There's no sinister social/political agenda, just supply and demand at work and people griping about having to spend on stuff they don't want to buy.  They still have a choice.    Go ahead and wrap another piece of foil and enjoy the game.

Season ticket holders in plenty of sports have to pay extra, or pay up front for things they may not want, there's nothing new here other than the venue for a game.

Put the game back in Buffalo where it started Let the Sabres Play the Toronto Maple Leafs you could Sell out Ralph Willson Stadium and Probably fill the First Niagara Center with People. And I am Sure The Leafs would hold some event in the Air Canada Center as well. You have 78,000 in the Ralph plus another 20,000 at the FNC. That whould make an Great event a Historic one.

adambomb... this isn't an issue of politics or economics, it's an issue of public relations.  I'll never argue against someone's earned & deserved success and find your rant rather pathetic.  Yes, the Flyers have a right to squeeze every penny they can out of this, but they also have a responsibility to their fans.  As you pointed out, the NHL & the Flyers organization provide sports entertainment, but without fan contribution neither organization would exist.  The Winter Classic is a unique experience they can offer to those fans that have supported them, and in doing so gave them the means to support this event.  Do you think if the Flyers were only selling 8,000 tickets to their home games that they would have been awarded this opportunity?  Now the fans that have been supporting the Flyers for years and giving them the money to pay the players needed to assemble a competitive/entertaining team are having to pay through the nose for the privilege to attend a game that would never have happened if it weren't for them in the first place.  They have every right to be upset about this.

Why is the NHL doing this? Because it can.
There is your answer.  It isn't about what is logical or ethical, it is about how much money they can make.

If this is technically one of the Flyers home games, why do season ticket holders need to pay for a ticket?  It should be included in the season tickets they already purchased.  Also is lame they are forcing people to buy tickets to other events they may not even want to go to.  Then again, you do not have to buy the tickets.  Unfortunately games have gotten too expensive for me to attend in person so I watch them on tv and the beers are not $7.50 and my fridge doesn't stop serving me.

Exactly communism is the only solution....Its not fair that a someone who spent tens of thousands of dollars and years and years of college to enter a company at the bottom and then climbed the ladder to the CEO level gets to then use thier money. "Its not fair" thats whats killing this country right there, people who want entitlement with instant gratification......We once lived in a country where Success was a good thing, now if your successful and happy your the enemy, you have what i dont and "Thats not fair".  So the NHL is a company which provides sports entertainment, and just like every other company on Gods green earth its primary goal is to make as much profit as it can.....they finally succeed in creating a "super bowl" type atmosphere for thier product and because its so popular it pushed the demand so high that it created a profitable beast per price of ticket....HOW DARE THEY!!! I dont care if your a company trying to make money to survive in the horrible economy I SHOULD COME FIRST, ME at the rate I choose and on MY schedule. ME ME ME!!!!!! Funny how people who hate the Rich are the ones constantly playing the lottery?

Flyers fans upset with Winter Classic tickets

I don't often find myself empathising with Philadelphia fans, but this seems absurd to me.  I know when the Bruins had the Winter Classic up in Boston they had the same sort of alumni game & also some college games, but they didn't make anyone purchase a package to all of them if they just wanted to see the Bruins vs. Flyers.  I know that if I had paid money to watch the alumni game they had here (which also included a bunch of celebrities who happen to be hockey fans in it) I wouldn't have been happy.  Even the highlights from it seemed slow paced and boring.  Most of the people I know who went to it only went because they couldn't get tickets to the real game and just wanted to see how the rink looked in Fenway.  Wouldn't they be better off selling tickets separately and hoping people actually show up & spend money on souvenirs & food than forcing people who don't want the tickets to buy them and not show up at all?

Wow.  That is some serious BS.  Philly fans should figure out a way to F over the NHL.  Somebody needs to get creative.

Flyers fans upset with Winter Classic tickets

I couldn't agree more with this article. I have been a die hard Flyers fan since I knew what the sport of hockey was. It's by far my favorite sport and team. I at one point was a season ticket holder, but I had to withdraw them because of the economy and how much more expensive the tickets got each year. There is no way that I would be able to take my fiance to this game without spending at least 1500 dollars. Yes you might think that's outrageous, but to be able to actually see the players without using binoculars that's what your going to have to spend. And also the food and parking that I didn't include in this package. I love the flyers and bleed orange and black, and it's  shame because I know there are so many other fans like me that wont be able to go to this game because they simply can't afford it. It would be nice to see the nhl reserve a section or 2 for the working class people and not the CEO's of companies. But that's the world we live in and it's a total disgrace. All in all go Flyers. And screw the NHL because it wants to make a little extra money.
