The Edmonton Oilers continued their hot start on Friday night with a 3-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche, their fourth consecutive victory, improving their early season record to 6-2-2, good enough for the top spot in the Northwest Division.

Defenseman Andy Sutton tallied one of the goals during the win, registering his first of the season late in the second period to give Edmonton a 2-0 lead. He also may have drawn some attention from the NHL for an elbowing penalty in the third period when he clipped Avalanche rookie sensation Gabriel Landeskog coming across the neutral zone.

UPDATE: The NHL has announced that Sutton will have an in-person hearing with Brendan Shanahan, the NHL's disciplinary expert, on Monday, which gives him the opportunity of suspending Sutton for more than five games. He will not be eligible to play in Edmoton's game against St. Louis on Sunday.

Along with the five-minute fighting major that he and Shane O'Brien received for the post-hit altercation, Sutton was also issued a two-minute minor for elbowing.

Hello, rule 48.

“They may look at it, they might not," said Sutton following the game, via Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal. "I’d do it (that play) again.”

Shanahan may have a busy day on Saturday as Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos reported that Chicago Blackhawks forward Daniel Carcillo has a hearing scheduled for 1 PM ET for an incident with Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen during Chicago's 3-0 loss on Friday. There was no penalty called on that play.

"Andy Sutton didnt intend on ther hit to the head"

Problem with that is Shanahan has allready given a few guys suspensions on hits they clearly didn't intend to land on the head.
Sutton knows how strict rules are this year.  Stupid play for him to make.

He'll sit one or two.  Not a real head hunting move, but dumb considering the new rules.

Due to his size, Sutton has to learn to turn the hip into the guy; Rob Blake had it figured out pretty good but he was inclined to hit along the boards moreso than in open ice; the puck carrier can't get away on the boards.  But I think the open ice hip check can be a viable alternative if your quick enough, or have the element of surprise.  I've seen Subban throw some good ones; you don't have to go low - in fact that might be a penalty.

Andy Sutton didnt intend on ther hit to the head... now most people dont, the other point to remember that landeskog dipped and sutton is 6'6".  he is taller than average so that impacts the way he hits.  if he is suspended it should be no more than 1 game, but i dont see a suspension as warranted for this hit.  Landeskog should take fault as well

Shanahan has been MIA since all his pre-season talk, probably won't do anything.

So we should only penalize somebody if they put the guy get seriously hurt?? I see Sutton's shoulder start to raise a little bit on the hit to the head. Maybe not significant enough to say that he did it on purpose. That's why it's being reviewed... Hits to the head obviously need to get removed from the game, and reviewing a hit doesnt necessarily mean suspension. There is no harm in reviewing hits so I don't see why you are up in arms?

Are you serious?
Sutton whiffed on the hit. Landeskog got right back up.
Whatever happened to keeping your head up and on a swivel as your skating through center ice?
Sutton didn't lower or raise his shoulder or elbow. He skated straight up. Landeskog was following the puck and didn't have his head up. Sutton hit him, barely. Now we're expecting people to be suspended for 'almost' hits?

This is all irrelevant anyways. If Shanahan is buddy buddy with Sutton, there won't be any suspension.
