Let's start by making this clear right from the start: when a goaltender is out of his crease he is not fair game to be hit (rule 69.4).

In the first period of Saturday's game in Boston between the Bruins and Sabres, Milan Lucic blocked a shot at his own blue line, and as he attempted to go down the ice on a breakaway, the puck ended up sliding too far out in front of him and into the Buffalo end of the ice. That's where Sabres goalie Ryan Miller scrambled out of his crease in an attempt to knock it away from Lucic, who was in no hurry to slow down or ease up.

This is the result, complete with a flying goalie mask:

Lucic was issued a two-minute minor for charging, while it's a mild surprise that didn't spark more of a fight seeing as how Buffalo just watched its starting goalie get run over.

UPDATE: Following the game Miller had some strong words for Lucic, via John Vogl of the Buffalo News: "I just stuck around because I wanted to say what a piece of [feces] I think Lucic is."

Quote of the year so far.

This entire rant is a joke....oh look, it is from a fan of the Flopping Canadiens...I had so much more respect for this team when they were the Flying Canadians.....The latest gaggle of these jokers are a bunch of pansies and con-artists and they are a stain on the proud Canadien tradition. I dont like the Habs because I have been a Bruins fan my whole life but I had to tip my hat to them when they would just out hustle and out play the Bruins....

Should Lucic get suspended...no way. It was a minor penalty for God's sake. He didnt kill Miller, he caught him off guard. That hit could have been much worse. Hell, the Sabres themselves didnt seem to have an issue with it.

BS. I played goal all my life. the comment was made to demonstrate the ludicrousness of the rules. I'm fully aware of what the rules are. Only a pussy would make a statement like you've made. Go back to your womans league.

Anyone who says...like the poster just before me does...things like "why not have the goalies skate up and take shots..." is just a complete and total moron who's never played the game.  Beyond that, it's just a juveneille and idiotic statement that takes a simple matter to the extreme, one that would and could never occur.

Why not have the goalies skate up?  Because any skilled player would strip them of the puck, pass it to a teammate who would then park it into the open net.  Hitting a guy isn't the only way to remove the puck from a player's possession you meathead.

The written and unwritten rules are clear.  YOU CAN'T RUN THE GOALIES, PERIOD.  I don't love the rule in it's full capacity, especially when goalies come way out like that, but you simply have to protect the goalies.

Two things:  The Sabres are pathetic for not suckering Lucic the first chance they got...take the penalty, take the suspension, because that guy just took out the best player on your team.  Second, Lucic once again displays the head-scratching behaviour all too typical of the NHL in general and the Bruins in particular.  It's out of control, and nobody - players, management, ownership or the officials - are doing enough about it.

There's no respect in today's game, and there's nobody in a position of leadership willing to do what it takes to end this insanity.

Why not just have the goalies skate the puck up and take shots on each other then, nobody can touch them, so what's to stop them from doing this? If a goalie comes out to the face-off circle then he should be eligible to be shoulder checked like he was. A goalie should only be safe from a hit in the crease, and maybe in the trapezoid, not all over the ice whenever he feels like it.

Watch the video, it was not a head shot at all, they connected shoulder to shoulder.

Millers act of clearing the puck moved his body position into Lucic's path. Lucic did not go out of his way to hit Miller. Then what about the swing of the goalie stick by Miller afterward? If he connected with that he could have broke an ankle or a knee. Is being discussed? I'm pretty sure players arent allowed to use their stick as a weapon.

Lucic stopped skating when he realized he would not get the puck before Miller, see video. At this point he must have realized than he could not get the puck and instead of going around Miller, which is required by rule, he skated right throuh him. Shannahan will not forget Lucic's 10 minute misconduct for a blindside sucker punch to Victor Hedman in the ECF last year. If this is Tyler Seguin than there would be no suspension, however I believe Lucic will be assessed a 2 game suspension.

Tough call.  Per the rulebook and rule on targeted head shots, Milan Lucic should be suspended for a crapload of games.  But since he took out Ryan Miller, should he get a stiffer punishment ?  Or because he's Milan Lucic, was making a play for the puck, and doesn't have a "past history" of dangerous cheap shots, should he get a lighter punishment ?  Once again, the NHL drops the ball by not have a REAL zero tolerance policy on such play.  There shouldn't even be a debate right now.
