Let's start by making this clear right from the start: when a goaltender is out of his crease he is not fair game to be hit (rule 69.4).

In the first period of Saturday's game in Boston between the Bruins and Sabres, Milan Lucic blocked a shot at his own blue line, and as he attempted to go down the ice on a breakaway, the puck ended up sliding too far out in front of him and into the Buffalo end of the ice. That's where Sabres goalie Ryan Miller scrambled out of his crease in an attempt to knock it away from Lucic, who was in no hurry to slow down or ease up.

This is the result, complete with a flying goalie mask:

Lucic was issued a two-minute minor for charging, while it's a mild surprise that didn't spark more of a fight seeing as how Buffalo just watched its starting goalie get run over.

UPDATE: Following the game Miller had some strong words for Lucic, via John Vogl of the Buffalo News: "I just stuck around because I wanted to say what a piece of [feces] I think Lucic is."

Quote of the year so far.

@RonB0ss2   Have you ever (a) read NHL Rule 69.4, or (b) played hockey?

This comes directly from the NHL Rulebook: "A goalkeeper is not “fair game” just because he is outside the goal crease. The appropriate penalty should be assessed in every case where an attacking player makes unnecessary contact with the goalkeeper. However, incidental contact will be permitted when the goalkeeper is in the act of playing the puck outside his goal crease provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such unnecessary contact."

And if you ever played hockey, you would realize that goalies are like quarterbacks in football: they play a specialized position, and a special set of rules applies to them. They are never "just like another skater." Everyone who has played hockey knows not to hit the other teams' goalie (unless you want a fight).

As for the baseball swing, yes, had Miller made contact (which he didn't), he should have been assessed a slashing penalty. There is no penalty for "attempted slashing." But, notably, Lucic got called for CHARGING--not goaltender interference. That means Lucic would have gotten called for the same penalty regardless of what position the player he hit played. That compounds and magnifies the egregiousness of the penalty. You push the puck too far in front of you so you decide to CHARGE a goalie? Like Miller said, completely gutless, and classless, and just what you would expect from that neanderthal "piece of [feces]."

Can you imagine if his slash attempt had made contact?  Now that's piss poor hockey right there.
The goalie comes out to the face off circle and plays the puck, gets hit and tries to break the guys leg..wtf is that all about?

Blows me away that you lame ass buffalo fans think this is t-ball, yet when your guy makes an attempt at slashing the frick outta someone it gets overlooked.

Pretty farkin hypocritical.

And for the record, you come out that far and play the puck, you're fair game.

Perhaps you want to live in the pre Brendan Shanahan era, that is fine. This is not old time hockey, that is gone away never to return. Welcome to the party PAThfinder. Nothing clean about it. Could have slowed up, instead he put his forearm up. Lucic and Chara wear skirts, always looking for the easy hit........... Never seen two tougher pu$$ies in my life. Hit someone who is ready for it, not someone who isn't, and is 80 pounds lighter......

Queen B's rock!!!!!!

I'd say a minimum of 5 games is in order.
Of course you would, you're a Sabre fan. He got his 2 minutes in the box, it's over. What's up with the calling for suspension?

You want to see if you can get the Buffalo police to arrest him for assault too? Then maybe we can have a trial for Lucic and Chara at the same time.

News flash for you, it's hockey. You don't suspend somebody for a clean check. He hit a goalie who was out of his crease playing the puck. If he hadn't lifted his arms you could almost call it incidental, but he definitely put a little something extra on it. Still, they sat him for 2 minutes, it's over.

Like I posted earlier, Thomas took his share of shots last season during the cup finals. That's what you get when you play out of the crease.

Suspension... Get real.

You want open season on goalies? Just dont get any whiney and cry when Thomas gets creamed. Theres an old saying "You reap what you sow".Don't like that one? Here's another-"karma is a bitch, baby"!!
I don't know if you watched any of the cup finals last year, but Thomas was getting pummeled by Vancouver. It's because he's usually way out of position, out of his crease, and trying to play the puck. When he gets hit, he gets hit. Nobody cried about it.

Still, I'm surprised nobody from Buffalo took a swing at Lucic, because he deserved it.

I'd say a minimum of 5 games is in order. Coward Lucic was too damn slow to get to the puck, so I guess he figured this he'd take a free shot. I'm very disappointed the Sabres couldn't have settled the score on the ice as the game was no contest tonight. I hope Thomas gets a shot just like this real soon. Lucic can then say sorry Tim, maybe that's on me..... As I said what a coward, absolutely zero guts!!!!!!!!!!!! Miller isn't even ready for a hit having just finished clearing the puck. Didn't know Milan was spelled  puss@.........

Was it a head shot?  Will Shanahan do something about it if it was?
