Let's start by making this clear right from the start: when a goaltender is out of his crease he is not fair game to be hit (rule 69.4).

In the first period of Saturday's game in Boston between the Bruins and Sabres, Milan Lucic blocked a shot at his own blue line, and as he attempted to go down the ice on a breakaway, the puck ended up sliding too far out in front of him and into the Buffalo end of the ice. That's where Sabres goalie Ryan Miller scrambled out of his crease in an attempt to knock it away from Lucic, who was in no hurry to slow down or ease up.

This is the result, complete with a flying goalie mask:

Lucic was issued a two-minute minor for charging, while it's a mild surprise that didn't spark more of a fight seeing as how Buffalo just watched its starting goalie get run over.

UPDATE: Following the game Miller had some strong words for Lucic, via John Vogl of the Buffalo News: "I just stuck around because I wanted to say what a piece of [feces] I think Lucic is."

Quote of the year so far.

Too bad the Sabres didn't hit Lucic with their purses.

From Eye On Hockey's post (and read my whole post, though): NHL Rule 69.4: "A goalkeeper is not “fair game” just because he is outside the goal crease. The appropriate penalty should be assessed in every case where an attacking player makes unnecessary contact with the goalkeeper. However, incidental contact will be permitted when the goalkeeper is in the act of playing the puck outside his goal crease provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such unnecessary contact."  It is a rule, but I'm with the majority of you that if the goalie comes that far out of the crease he should be "fair game."  Reminds me of all of the roughing the passer rules in football.  You get your ass exposed to the big boys, don't be a puss when they knock the s#*% out of you.  Both are rules to protect the most important player on the ice/field.  However, if you are going to play the game with a rule in your head that you will not get pummeled when you get into that grey area, then you will suffer the consequences.

I'm a B's fan, and even I think Lucic went a little too far with his check. He could have eased up some, he didn't have to throw the whole forearm into him. He could have made it "incidental" without knocking Miller out like that. That's my unbiased opinion.

My fan opinion says - Holy Smokes! Lucic knocked him out, and it was AWESOME!

I guess the officals decided that the "appropriate penalty" for Miller venturing out of his crease and getting wiped out was 2 minutes.  End of controversy.

goalies are fair game when they roam out of their crease and always have been , although back in the 70's and 80's when the NHL was a man's game lucic would have had to fight the rest of the night and their would have been a donnybrook after the hit ..... but buffalo did nothing it shows how bad and low the NHL has fallen , the only time hockey is worth watching is come april ( playoff time ) i myself cant watch a regular season game ... especailly if it might come down to a stupid shootout !!!
