Let's start by making this clear right from the start: when a goaltender is out of his crease he is not fair game to be hit (rule 69.4).

In the first period of Saturday's game in Boston between the Bruins and Sabres, Milan Lucic blocked a shot at his own blue line, and as he attempted to go down the ice on a breakaway, the puck ended up sliding too far out in front of him and into the Buffalo end of the ice. That's where Sabres goalie Ryan Miller scrambled out of his crease in an attempt to knock it away from Lucic, who was in no hurry to slow down or ease up.

This is the result, complete with a flying goalie mask:

Lucic was issued a two-minute minor for charging, while it's a mild surprise that didn't spark more of a fight seeing as how Buffalo just watched its starting goalie get run over.

UPDATE: Following the game Miller had some strong words for Lucic, via John Vogl of the Buffalo News: "I just stuck around because I wanted to say what a piece of [feces] I think Lucic is."

Quote of the year so far.

I'm serious - He ventured 20 feet out of his net to play the puck...He chose to involve himself in the play ouside of his net.  Lucic finished his check, nothing more.  Substitute any other player into that scenario and nobody has a problem with the hit, but because he's a goalie, he's untouchable?  I think anytime a goaltender leaves the safety of his crease, he is just another player on the ice trying to either possess or move the puck.  I was a little shocked in regards to the minimal response by Buffalo following the collision...that is something I'd be concerned about if I were a Sabres fan.  Anyways, I bet Ryan Miller thinks twice next time before darting out if his crease in a race to the puck.  Solid hit, no doubt.

No. He is not clean to hit him. Goalies can not be hit whether they're in the crease or not.

Dude, come on, there at least has to be a puck near him, but no it was cleared away. Goalies are the QBs of hockey. Lucic is just a thug and the Sabres are cowards for not beating the crap out of him. btw the score was 1-0 Buffalo, now its 3-1 Boston, think this might have changed the momentum?

Why is it not okay to hit a goaltender when he's 20 feet out of his crease?  He has involved himself in the play and is fair game.  Nothing wrong with that whatsoever.  Lucic shouldn't have gotten a 2 minute penalty.  Don't want to get hit?  Stay in net.
