Tempers flare following Holtby's celebration

As far as rivalries in the American Hockey League go, the one between the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and the Hershey Bears is probably as good (and intense) as it gets. That's kind of fitting when you remember that they are the affiliates of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals, which has been a pretty good NHL rivalry dating all the way back to the early 1990's and their Patrick Division days.

On Friday night Hershey picked up a shootout win in Wilkes-Barre, and Bears goaltender Braden Holtby was a little pumped up after stopping Nick Petersen's shot to secure the win, giving a series of fist-pumps as he skated toward center ice to greet his teamamtes. That, of course, resulted in some heated exchanges at the middle of the ice. Apparently Holtby's response was a bit of a retalliation for Penguins defenseman Simon Despres making a similar gesture following an overtime win earlier this season.

Here's the video, via Sweetest Hockey On Earth:

Holtby, one of the Capitals' top prospects, was issued a 10-minute misconduct after the game was over.

Tempers flare following Holtby's celebration

Holtby is not a hack simply because he is in the minor league. Have you ever heard of a prospect? You do realize players need time in the minors before they are ready in the NHL. Holtby shocked the world when he was called up last year with his shutouts and winning streaks for the Capitals. They are giving him more time to mature with the Bears. You really are an idiot firehalo. Then again, if all you like hockey for is their cute celebrations and fights then I really cant expect more from you. Good day sir.

Absurd. The referee should be shelved for five games for his idiotic officiating!

Tempers flare following Holtby's celebration

While I think it might be a little excessive of a celebration.  He should not of gotten anything at all for it.  Game Misconduct are you serious?  This was an issue of class and sportsmanship.  In hockey if you get a win you don't rub it in other teams face.  Just because Simon Despres does something stupid doesn't mean you should drop down to his level and mock him.  This was something that these guys could settle on the ice next time they play.  Whoever decided to give him the misconduct later mad a awful call.
If you get a chance watch Simon Despres and Holtby's celebrations back to back.  I couldn't stop laughing watching them one after the other.

Tempers flare following Holtby's celebration

Minor league Penguins are just like the parent club, a bunch of babies. No reason on earth they should have been upset with the goalie celebration. Whiners.

Tempers flare following Holtby's celebration

Hardly an excessive celebration. Just an emotional, well deserved personal celebration...Wasn't showing anyone up, Holtby was psyched because he contributed to his teams success. The Penguins come off as sore losers and the penalty was unwarranted.  If he gets in the shooters face or singles him out for his celebration, it would have been different. But not the case at all.

Tempers flare following Holtby's celebration

Why can scorers celebrate after any goal, let alone a game-winning one, but Holtby gets hit with a 10-minute misconduct after he stuffs a shooter for the win? A simple celebration is fine, after a big save, I sometimes do a little celebration to psych me & my teammates up, which is what Holtby did here.
