Groin injury puts Rick DiPietro on IR, again

By Brian Stubits

The Islanders placed goaltender Rick DiPietro on injured reserve on Thursday because of an injured groin.

That's the news. I have run out of jokes for this. Heck, comedians by trade probably would have no more material on it. This guy has been hurt in seemingly every way a goalie can be and has very few parts of the body that haven't caused him to miss time in his career.

But the good news in it all is that the Islanders have Al Montoya to handle the goaltending duties. He's been the best of the Isles' three goalies this season (the other being Evgeni Nabokov), so on the ice the story doesn't impact the Islanders all that much.

I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that DiPietro is injury prone. He puts Samuel L. Jackson's character in the awful movie Unbreakable to shame. With this visit to the IR, it's the second trip there already this season for DiPietro. A concussion put him on the list for a couple weeks earlier this season.

DiPietro, the No. 1 overall draft pick by the Islanders in the 2000 draft, has only played more than 26 games in four of his 10 seasons in the NHL, but he's on the Isles payroll for another 10 seasons at $4.5 million per season. So he has a long time to try and put together another full schedule, but you really wonder if his body will ever allow that to happen again.

It's easy to want to laugh at DiPietro's injury misfortunes over the years, especially for Islanders fans. It's a lot better than crying for them. But I don't think even the Islanders haters want to see the guy continue to get injured.

It just always seems like a foregone conclusion.

Groin injury puts Rick DiPietro on IR, again

In another stunning development, ice is discovered to be frozen.

On the positive side, Rickety's contract will guarantee that the Islanders meet the salary floor for 10 more years.

Groin injury puts Rick DiPietro on IR, again

Surprised Only playing in 26 or more games in 40% of his career with the Isles is not something to be proud of. He makes millions of dollars each season to basically work out with the team, get hurt in a game or in practice, and then go on IR or be a scratch forever and a day,  How good a goalie can you be if you never play?!??  Ten years later , at his best, he's only gonna be about 50% maybe 75% of what his potential was. That turns into a high GAA and with the Isles current offense....losses. something's gota give...we'll see who flinches first.  Oh, and this comes from a lifelong Isle fan who is still waiting for that Drive For Five season !

CORRECTIONS:

-Mike Milbury is certainly one of the worst GMs in the history of North American professional sports but, to be fair, he was not in charge when DiPietro's 15-year deal was signed.

-This deal was indeed made during the salary cap era during Garth Snow's tenure, but at the owner's behest.

-Most importantly, at this point, most Islanders fans would prefer that DiPietro stay on the disabled list for the duration of his contract, since he is no longer an NHL-caliber goalie.

Groin injury puts Rick DiPietro on IR, again

Mista P has probably THE most inept, totally bass ackwards look into the situation. DiPietro and the Ilslanders signed the contract right after the lockout, and is considered to be a new era cap signing. At the time, teams believed this is the way it was going to be. So, get your facts straight P, do your research, before you look like an idiot. Oh, wait,...too late. Too many morons on CBS, and P leads the way.

That deal pre-dates your fancy schmancy cap-era, it was a contract made during a competitve league.  Not being able to old onto guys becasue you don't have a competitve salary to give was common.  Nowadays players have far more power with their 8 million dollar salary cap.

Groin injury puts Rick DiPietro on IR, again

Well, I guess you cant have DiPietro without the I and the R.

Just another reason why we should not be subjected every week to the logic of Mike Milbury. In a competitive cap league, roughly 7% of the teams payroll for the next 10 years is invested in a goalie that can't stay healthy. And its something inherited from a different regime. Couple in his other blunders, like Luongo & Chara, there's no reason why this guy should be taken seriously. He's the Matt Millen of hockey.

I, for one, am shocked.

Good news Isles fans, only another $45 million to go on DiPietro. Or one entire payroll for some teams.

Whomever it was that said if you're a pro athlete and you get offered a long-term contract, take it, was very wise.
