Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

Daniel Carcillo is going to know Brendan Shanahan pretty well soon. At this rate he'll know Shanny's favorite food, his anniversary and exactly how hard Shanahan can lay the hammer down.

The Chicago Blackhawks forward earned himself an indefinite suspension from Shanahan over his hit Monday night on Tom Gilbert of the Edmonton Oilers. It was brutally impressive, an ugly yet eye-popping hit that sent Gilbert careening through the air like a Frisbee.

Holy smokes.

In this era of homer announcers, you know it's bad when the play by play guy's first word after the hit by one of his team's players is "Oh! That's going to be a suspension."

It is, the question remains how many games. That fits a dirty hit by about any definition you want to use. Not to mention boarding -- and interference if you felt so inclined.

"I knew who it was and you have to be aware," Gilbert said. "I should have been more ready for a guy whose made those kind of hits before."

Gilbert, not surprisingly, left the game with an injury from the hit. The kicker? Carcillo did, too. So not only did his hit likely cost him some games and salary from the NHL, it could also cost him some additional time if the injury is bad. Talk about a double whammy.

I admit to getting a little gun-shy on guessing the length of Shanahan suspension calls recently. I thought he let Raffi Torres go too long before suspending him for a third questionable hit in three games and also felt that he missed the boat on the Tomas Kopecky, Michael Del Zotto incident.

But there's no way there's not a hefty suspension for Carcillo here, right? After all, he has already been smacked by the Shanahammer once this season for boarding and has been suspended a somewhat remarkable five times already in his career.

That makes for the Shanahan trifecta: A bad hit that resulted in an injury from a player with a history of supplemental discipline. If there is no suspension from this mix, then I'm left wondering all over again like it's the Colin Campbell era.

I'd guess Carcillo gets an in-person hearing for this, opening up the possibility of five games or more. How many games do you think he should get?

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

Ravens1113 Hit it on the head exactly.........This was a bad play that turned even worse in a hurry but he was pretty far off of the boards when the hit occured and didn't really finish the hit.  Was it a stupid play?  Sure was.  Go for the puck dude!!  His reputation will cause more of a fine and suspension than the actual hit should have.  The funny thing is, is that Carcillo for stretches has played half way decent hockey.  He has skated at times with some of the elite wingers on the Hawks.  He is just really bad at decision making!  I'll take Ben Eager, Adam Burish, or Big Buff back any day to take Car bombs place!

no intention to go for the puck.....players should know that intent to injure will get you on the naughty list.....give him 5 and 5 for repeat offence

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

Regardless of the arguments about the validity of the call or the hit, the bottom line is that Carcillo's rep as an unsportsmanlike cheap shot opportunist is well deserved (like Avery). He has no business in a Blackhawks uniform.

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

dog - he definetly had no intention of playing the puck, as he couldnt/wouldnt move his neanderthal thug ass fast enough to get to the puck first

agreed - this is a good blackhawk team that does not need the stigma ans stench of this clown!

jjk - what planet are you from! shanny soft... you know nothing of the game !shanny was just like adam graves a soft spoken player who only fought when he absolutely had to and when he did no one wanted his action. |He, just like graves was one of the most feared players in hockey throughout his carreer. shanny was known for being a stand up player on and off the ice and has the respect of all the players he played with/against.   all this from a guy who could put it in the net... and oh ya jjk take a look at the film when shanny played cloth elbow and shoulder pads! not like these players in their armor now!

shanny soft - rrrright!

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

First, Carcillo hit Gilbert with his stick/hands to the the head (illegal hit to the head).
It was an illegal hit, bit you're WAAAAAY off. Carcillo got Gilbert under his arm as it was coming up. There wasn't a hit to the head or even close to it.

Gilbert had not touched the puck and Carcillo interfered with his ability to do so (interference).
Yep

Carcillo made no attempt to play the puck only to hit Gilbert (major for intent to injure).
Judgement call, and I think yours is clouded

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

Wake up Riegert - the Angelo thing was a joke - get in the game.
It is a shame that the Hawks name has to be mentioned with Cacillo's. The Hawks are a much better team than that. In my opinion, the Blackhawks should handle this one in house beside what the leasgue says. If Carcillo never plays another game for the Hawks, I would be fine with that.
