Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

Daniel Carcillo is going to know Brendan Shanahan pretty well soon. At this rate he'll know Shanny's favorite food, his anniversary and exactly how hard Shanahan can lay the hammer down.

The Chicago Blackhawks forward earned himself an indefinite suspension from Shanahan over his hit Monday night on Tom Gilbert of the Edmonton Oilers. It was brutally impressive, an ugly yet eye-popping hit that sent Gilbert careening through the air like a Frisbee.

Holy smokes.

In this era of homer announcers, you know it's bad when the play by play guy's first word after the hit by one of his team's players is "Oh! That's going to be a suspension."

It is, the question remains how many games. That fits a dirty hit by about any definition you want to use. Not to mention boarding -- and interference if you felt so inclined.

"I knew who it was and you have to be aware," Gilbert said. "I should have been more ready for a guy whose made those kind of hits before."

Gilbert, not surprisingly, left the game with an injury from the hit. The kicker? Carcillo did, too. So not only did his hit likely cost him some games and salary from the NHL, it could also cost him some additional time if the injury is bad. Talk about a double whammy.

I admit to getting a little gun-shy on guessing the length of Shanahan suspension calls recently. I thought he let Raffi Torres go too long before suspending him for a third questionable hit in three games and also felt that he missed the boat on the Tomas Kopecky, Michael Del Zotto incident.

But there's no way there's not a hefty suspension for Carcillo here, right? After all, he has already been smacked by the Shanahammer once this season for boarding and has been suspended a somewhat remarkable five times already in his career.

That makes for the Shanahan trifecta: A bad hit that resulted in an injury from a player with a history of supplemental discipline. If there is no suspension from this mix, then I'm left wondering all over again like it's the Colin Campbell era.

I'd guess Carcillo gets an in-person hearing for this, opening up the possibility of five games or more. How many games do you think he should get?

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

Who cares if he gets 8 16 or 24 games it`s not going to be hard to replace him with one of the rookies. Carcillo is not a Toews or a Kane or a Hossa. Not going to lose to much scoring that`s for sure.If he didn`t get suspended in this game he probably would of Thursday against Philly anyway.  Who cares?

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

I am a Hawks fans and am PO'd they hired this guy in the first place. Instead of just suspending a player, tell the team that they have to play those games a man short with 11 forwards. Make it so the teams don't want to hire a thug like this...

And please don't send him to the AHL. He'll be hitting younger smaller players left and right.

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

To those saying the hit was not illegal, you need to take a remedial course in the rules.  First, Carcillo hit Gilbert with his stick/hands to the the head (illegal hit to the head).  Gilbert had not touched the puck and Carcillo interfered with his ability to do so (interference).  Carcillo made no attempt to play the puck only to hit Gilbert (major for intent to injure).  Carcillo drove Gilbert from behind into the boards (take your pick, boarding/head shot/intent to injure).  Taken in combination with a history of suspensions, the event gives rise to supplemental discipline and the indefinite suspension pending disciplinary action is a bit of a hint that Sahnahan is going to drop the hammer on Carcillo.  And, just to be clear, I am not an Oiler fan, but I think that hits like this one have no place in the game.  How many more concussions do we need to have before some people start to get it?

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

10 games after he is cleared medically to play. Lets not over react. They were both heading to the sam spot, Gilbert took a bad angle in front of him, while he was going straight at the puck. Gilbert didn't protect himself and got squashed in oncoming traffic. The hit was illegal and resulted in injury so it has to bea suspension. it was also dirty because he extended his arms and drove him instead of simply skating into him which I don't think he could have completely avoided no matter what. 5 games for the hit and injury and 5 more because it was dirty, but none of it should start until he is healthy enough to play. What good does it do to suspend him if he is hurt anyway? IF that is the case then just fine him that amount and be done with it.

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

That is a joke.  Gilbert cuts off Carcillo and Carcillo pushes him.  It wasnt a hard check, it was a push.  I need to hear BS's BS on this one.  If guys can cut in front of other guys and expect no contact the NHL becomes a joke.

Carcillo at it again: Ejected for Gilbert hit

How about for 5 years or permanently.  If there is a guy who will break a players neck or kill him on a cheap shot it's this baboon.  What does the NHL do when that happens?  And it is going to happen.  Soon.

Carcillo at it again: Ejected for Gilbert hit

3 games? He should be so lucky. 5 previous suspensions is plenty, but just watching the guy go out and take shifts for the Flyers (haven't seen as much of him as a Blackhawk) seemed to give him enough history. Most of the time scoring seemed secondary to taking whatever kind of shot he could get on an opponent. The worst thing for him right now is that he's barely 2 months removed from being suspended 2 games for an identical type of play against Carolina (after which he said he wouldn't change his style), and I think everyone can agree that this one was notably worse. I predict Shanny will sit him for 8. No idea how many games Q will give him.

Carcillo at it again: Ejected for Gilbert hit

Agreed hit looks worse because Gilbert was ill-prepared for contact.  Surprising thing about Carcillo is that you watch the games and he seems to have decent skill, but thinks his highest function is making questionable hits like this.

If he only gets 3 games, then expect more of this kind of play to take place.  I think that given his history, Carcillo will get 8 or more games.  It is not as if Shanahan is taking a great player off the ice, Carcillo is a bit or a whack-nut and Shanahan needs to send a very strong message.
