Tortorella: I tainted the Classic with my mouth

You knew it was only a matter of time before John Tortorella would apologize for his remarks regarding the officiating in the Winter Classic. Either that or face a fine (or both, which is still entirely possible).

Following the Rangers' 3-2 win at Citizen's Bank Park, Tortorella was asked about the officiating at the end of the game. He went on to joke -- at least that was my impression there -- that NBC and the NHL were conspiring to take the game into overtime. He went on to call the officiating disgusting. Of course that perked some ears in the NHL offices.

Well on Wednesday Tortorella began the backtracking, explaining in his apology that he said his comments re: NBC were tongue-in-cheek but understands they might not have come across that way. Here is his apology from the Rangers' website.

"They were sarcastic comments by me at the wrong time, and it was frustration on my part, as far as the referees on my part and what was done at the end of the game," Tortorella explained. "Not for a second in no way, time, shape, or form did I think anything like that [fixing the game so that it goes to overtime] goes on within our league, or ever will."

Tortorella added that his comments regarding the referees meeting with NBC to conspire at having the Winter Classic go to overtime were completely "tongue-in-cheek." "For me to question the integrity of the league, the integrity of NBC, the integrity of [referees] Denny [LaRue] and Ian [Walsh], the Flyers, the Rangers, go right on through all the people here -- there's not a chance I am thinking that way," Tortorella continued. "It was wrong with my sarcasm and my frustration and I apologize to everyone involved.

"I tainted the Classic with my mouth," Tortorella said.

In his apology, Tortorella explained that he went so far as to call everybody he could think of to apologize to, including Flyers GM Paul Holmgren. Tortorella has apologized to just about everybody, except the referees who he did call good referees before criticizing them on Monday. He's saving those apologies for in-person.

I don't know Tortorella very well in the coach-reporter sense, but I've had the chance to be around him and see him in the locker room after a few recent games. He has a gruff exterior to be sure, but he has a sincerity to him. I respect the fact that he's taking his apology as far as he is, including apologizing to the officials in person.

With that said, you can't criticize league officials, jokingly or not. Behind every joke lies some truth, so they say. The over-the-top part about the conspiracy was obviously the joke, but his criticism of the officials still had some seriousness to it.

The man crossed the line in the heat of the moment.  We all commit brain farts in life just not in front of the national media.  The problem for him is he went so far to say that the games were fixed.  This is sacrileges in any sport.  He will pay dearly for his comments.  He will be fined as well as be suspended.  Remember Betman is a protégé of David Stern.  They do everything the same including handing out stiff penalties.  In closing, I give him credit for completely owning it and accepting the consequences.

Saying what he said was wrong. The content of his statement wasn't. Any fan of hockey or anyone who has ever played knows that those calls by the officials were poor. Starting with the delay of game when the defenseman was pushed into the goal right up to the penalty shot. There probably was some merit in his statement but he should have kept it in house. Torts is a great coach and tells it like it is which is great most of the time, just not this time.

Torts has done a great job with this team. He's an honest coach who is not afraid to get on and at times bench his best players if they aren't working hard enough. He finally has the talent to go with the grit and the goalie and rangers fans are getting to watch what a real team looks like. He's been building with young talent, added a star who can clearly handle playing in NY, in Richards, and now is just getting his best deffenseman back in mark Staal. This is the youngest team in the league I believe, and should be a force for several years. As for the comments, he said that after a win... Imagine if that horrible penalty shot call tied the game? Thankfully for his wallet and the team the right team won. Flyers and Rangers along with Pittsburgh should be a great race in the east.

2 of the last 3 steelers superbowls were rigged with bs calls ALL game vs the seattle (every play the sehawks made over 10 yeards was called back for "holding", wr darrell jackson gets rapped in the endzone, and is called for OFFENSIVE pass interference, for pushing off the db that was laying on top of him, hasellbeck gets a clipping call making a tackle after THROWING an interception- which defies physics... referee, walt anderson admits 5 years later, he blew the game - google it... ) and arizona (had firt and 20 about 17 times, never was allowe dthat final hail mary, fumble wasnt reviewd, harrison's half time score was a 50/50 call, in favor of pitt). The one that DIDN'T have any controversial calls, wasn't, .... and they lost to green bay.
The only reason why the giants beat the pats, was bc, there weere limited whistles on eitehr side. a holding here or a holding there on the giants, and the pats win. Jabbar gaffneys td vs th ravens was BS! bart scott threw his helmet, he knew they played 59 mins of football for NOTHING, to have it all ripped away by refs.
the league MADE tortorella apollogize, dont get that twisted.  i support any player of coach that calls out these bad calls.
these refs make bad calls and suffer no consequesnces.
How about the kid who made that td catch in the Michigan vs VT game last nite. Td call on field, and thye reverse it??? Michigan was  -3 fav, 60% pt line play was on mich.. the money play was 70% on VT, at +135 vs mich -160. Game ends 23-20, michigan.
U tell me what goes on.
BTW, something to consider, when the refs were blowing the calls at the end of the Winter Classic... it was 3-2 = 5 goals. The over/under was 5.5..... it would be interesting to see which side vegas/books had vs the public.. seems like refs were forcing it to 6 goals, but it never happened. But what do i know.

Tortorella: I tainted the Classic with my mouth

And all of you should be proud that both teams played well in the Classic, instead of arguing over which of your teams is the 2nd best in the Eastern Conference. We all know who is #1 and who will still be #1.

That being said, it wouldn't surprise me at all if there was at least some element of truth to what Totrty was saying. Maybe a "well, if it's close in the 3rd....................... (fill in the blank). There have been far bigger conspiacies by television networks, ya know. Rigged game shows, subliminal messaging, rigged penalties to send games to OT, etc :D  )
