Flyers fans attack Rangers fans after Classic

Fan-on-fan violence has hit hockey again and unfortunately for the good fans of the Philadelphia Flyers, it will further sully their overall bad reputation.

The Winter Classic was great. It was a fun event, turned out to be a really entertaining game and sure seemed to be a hit in Philadelphia to me. Despite the large numbers of New York Rangers fans I saw in attendance, there was nothing more than a few boos for the Blueshirt fans walking around the stadium before the game.

It was after the game that things got rough.

When you want a quick meal in South Philly, where do you go? Geno's Steaks, of course, one of the most renowned Philly cheesesteaks in the world. Naturally, there were fans of both the Rangers and Flyers waiting in line when a fight broke out. I'm not even sure if fight is the right word, more like an assault.

Here is video of the incident and Philadelphia Fox 29's story. (NSFW warning: there is some cursing.)

Apparently proud of their efforts, you can hear one of the attackers telling the Rangers fan that was just knocked cold to "go to [expletive deleted] sleep."

What was the cause of the disturbance, was it some postgame trash talk that heated everybody up? According to the Fox report, it was a situation where the Flyers fans bribed a local window washer to come and squirt the Rangers fans with water. That led to the hostilities boiling over and the above being the result.

One of the two Rangers fans that was assaulted is reportedly a police officer who was off duty. He was taken to a hospital in North New Jersey near his home, in the Woodbridge township. From the Star-Ledger:

"He took a severe beating," township spokesman John Hagerty said, adding that the officer was taken to a hospital, where he required stitches to close wounds. Hagerty refused to release the name of the officer, though News 12 New Jersey identified him as Neil Auricchio Jr., an Iraq war veteran.

Thanks to Facebook and SB Nation's Broad Street Hockey -- and one person's intelligence -- the Philadelphia police have a pretty good lead. Check out the information that Broad Street Hockey's Travis Hughes dug up and turned over to the police.

The dispute might not have been related to the game, I don't know, but what I can deduce is that these Rangers fans were picked partly because they were wearing blue instead of orange. It's stories like this that will continue to dissuade fans to wear opposing team colors to games, a sad development if I may say so.

This is the second fan violence incident in hockey in a little more than a week. You'll recall the story in San Jose of a 16-year-old girl being hit over the head and concussed at a Sharks game because she was wearing a Canucks jersey. In that case it was one hit and the accused attacker said it was an accident. There is no using that excuse in this melee.

Your right, people suck everywhere, but in Philly the percentage of jack holes is higher than any other city in the world.  I mean were talking about a low class of people who openly support a psychotic dog killing scum bag as there QB, tazed a kid who was running on the field at Phillies game because they were to fat on cheesesteaks to catch him, and have killed people after games just because they happen to have their rival teams jersey on.  If you read all these stories about after game violence in Philly it's never one on one, it's always one or two guys being beaten up or killed by 5, 6, or more of these Philly low lifes.  Philly is a horrible town filled with scum bags and wannabe rocky's who can't handle the fact that there sports teams suck, so they take it out on the nearest fan that is representing his team.  It's really low class, but then again like I said this is the town that brought back Michael Vick after he killed, tortured, and mamed more animals then any serial killer known to man in the past 50 years combined.  Now the Eagles suck and suck bad, not because Vick is a psychotic piece of shiz, but because he sucks as a QB and has never won an important game is his life.

Hey people.  People suck everywhere.  Each town has it's A holes.  So does my town.  So does sweet little town USA.  Stop arguing about it and move on.  If you see something like this happening to someone, step in.  If you see on it TV or a video, talk about it like reasonable people.  Don't sit behind your computer and whine about whose city sucks more and where all the low lifes live.  Guess what?  They live right down the street from every one of us.  Don't act like children.   Let it go.  Be kind.  Be real men.

funny SoreLoser, I didn't even read all of the first one, maybe I'm doing more harm than good for my cause. I'm pinning that one on Pitt though, that's more their fan territory. Agreed, and I'm sure there are tons of Philly ones as well.
I've got to stop, my kids are wondering why I'm always on the laptop. Agree to disagree overall and as a previous poster said, best seat in the house is at home w/ HD, no fights or DUI. Peace.

Mets86, I keep hearing it only happens in Philly, yet how do you explain these examples?  In every instance, they were outnumbered. Again, I don't condone what happened in Philly, but stop w/ the "this never happens anywhere else but Philly" crap, as clearly it does. And these are only a few examples. You're all over Philly for what occurs here, and with good reason, but yet you ignore what happens in your backyard and in NY. As you said, you can't have it both ways.

Burytm... You keep missing the point here. Philly fans love to fight when they have an army behind them, this crap doesn't happen in Boston, NY, or any mid west city. Maybe the savage gang bangers in Oakland or LA do it but they don't try and deny themselves as being animals or "great fans" West coast fans are paper weights when it comes to passion. I have seen fights at Shea or Citi field and they weren't people getting ganged up or pearl harbored. Philly wants to use the "we are tough guys yeah 4 of us just beat another opposing fan down because they dared to walk into our stadium wearing a redskins jersey or a mets jersey and cheer for their team. For christsakes one of your talk show hosts on 950am was bitching about how knicks fans came to philly for a game last year and took over wells fargo center, and the callers actually called to complain about tHAT INSTEAD OF JODIE MEEKS SHOOTING 30 PCT FROM THE FIELD IN THE GAME.  BOTTOM LINE IS THIS.. Philly fans hate to see other fans in their stadiums, parking lots, chesse steak joints, museums, etc.. But they love to puff their chests out when they go on the road with a group and try and taunt the home fans. Can't have it both ways now.. You guys are insecure, weak, mental midget, meat heads and go through life like its a jackass or south park episode. You will always be the armpit of the northeast and we all know when push comes to shove it will never be a fair fight when it comes to starting trouble whether its taunting or in physical nature... It wouldn't surprise me if many of the fans know the cowardly clowns who jumped these rangers fans but are just covering it because to you its a win in the fight department. Its just a shame because Philly does have some good fans who go to the games for the right reasons....
