Flyers fans attack Rangers fans after Classic

Fan-on-fan violence has hit hockey again and unfortunately for the good fans of the Philadelphia Flyers, it will further sully their overall bad reputation.

The Winter Classic was great. It was a fun event, turned out to be a really entertaining game and sure seemed to be a hit in Philadelphia to me. Despite the large numbers of New York Rangers fans I saw in attendance, there was nothing more than a few boos for the Blueshirt fans walking around the stadium before the game.

It was after the game that things got rough.

When you want a quick meal in South Philly, where do you go? Geno's Steaks, of course, one of the most renowned Philly cheesesteaks in the world. Naturally, there were fans of both the Rangers and Flyers waiting in line when a fight broke out. I'm not even sure if fight is the right word, more like an assault.

Here is video of the incident and Philadelphia Fox 29's story. (NSFW warning: there is some cursing.)

Apparently proud of their efforts, you can hear one of the attackers telling the Rangers fan that was just knocked cold to "go to [expletive deleted] sleep."

What was the cause of the disturbance, was it some postgame trash talk that heated everybody up? According to the Fox report, it was a situation where the Flyers fans bribed a local window washer to come and squirt the Rangers fans with water. That led to the hostilities boiling over and the above being the result.

One of the two Rangers fans that was assaulted is reportedly a police officer who was off duty. He was taken to a hospital in North New Jersey near his home, in the Woodbridge township. From the Star-Ledger:

"He took a severe beating," township spokesman John Hagerty said, adding that the officer was taken to a hospital, where he required stitches to close wounds. Hagerty refused to release the name of the officer, though News 12 New Jersey identified him as Neil Auricchio Jr., an Iraq war veteran.

Thanks to Facebook and SB Nation's Broad Street Hockey -- and one person's intelligence -- the Philadelphia police have a pretty good lead. Check out the information that Broad Street Hockey's Travis Hughes dug up and turned over to the police.

The dispute might not have been related to the game, I don't know, but what I can deduce is that these Rangers fans were picked partly because they were wearing blue instead of orange. It's stories like this that will continue to dissuade fans to wear opposing team colors to games, a sad development if I may say so.

This is the second fan violence incident in hockey in a little more than a week. You'll recall the story in San Jose of a 16-year-old girl being hit over the head and concussed at a Sharks game because she was wearing a Canucks jersey. In that case it was one hit and the accused attacker said it was an accident. There is no using that excuse in this melee.

tony, good point. i was gonna say the same thing. no doubt they attended the game, but this is not 'fan violence'. we don't even know what they were fighting about. i'm sure it started out as flyers/rangers ribbing, but pobably escelated to personal attacks. this wasn't a case of a dude getting knocked out because he was a rangers fan. in most cases, if opposing fans would just ignore the ribbing, it will never end up in violence. i've been to countless eagles/phills/ flyers games. seen many philly fans confront opposing fans. every time the opposing fan walked away, nothing happened. every time opposing fan ran their mouths, they got spanked. you're not gonna snap your fingers and make millions of philly fans respectable. so control the only thing you can- yourself. keep your mouth shut and get home safely.

Either way if they are caught or not, wont be wise for flyers fans to show up at MSG,There only saving grace is that they dont have to go into the City, all they have to do is stay in Penn Station and migrate like roaches into MSG.There will be payback trust me on that. Now that its on youtube and over ever news station someone is in for it.Like i said before i hope its not an innocent Flyers fan.I hope its a Loud Mouth punk that gets "PUT TO SLEEP"

Not saying that ny fans are angels they arent. I've been to Philly in 2006 and seen 10000 mets fans there taunting the home Philly fans. But ny fans don't attack or taunt fans walking down 34th street or leaving stadium in parking lots. Philly fans are very notorious for this kind of behavior always has always will be.

If there was 2 ranger fans at genos that were 6ft 3 and 240 no chance that fat slug and his lilltle side kick start a fight. These Guys are cowards and are the exact reason why everyone tears apart Philly. For Christ sake 3 grown men with rap sheets beat up a fellow Philly fan outside mcfaddens because he bumped into them at mcfaddens. Maybe it's upbringing from past generations and every Philly fan thinks they are Schultz or Dave brown once they get alcohol in them. But it's got to stop already. I am a die hard mets fan who has been to the vet and citizens bank park many times and until 2008 never had an issue until the phillies got good. Now all the miserable eagles and flyers fans who hated baseball needed to masquerade as phillies fans because they needed to jump on winning bandwagon. I can tell you right now if these clowns don't get apprehended before feb 6th game at MSG it may not be wise for flyer fans to show up at MSG.

from the best rotation to the dream team and now this, these are bunch of front running ass h*les. you feel proud of your self knocking someone out cold and then had the audacity to say "go to sleep", first off all you pussies were feeling tough with your friends by your side so you ganged up on those two guys and second you can clearely see that was a cheap shot. one guy was holding him back and he got out and knocked him out when the guy was trying to help his partner. i always hated philly and will always hate their stinking cheesestake asses. by the way the rangers b*tch slapped the flyers despite the fact that the officials was trying with everything to give the game to the bum of a team you call flyers.

I was at the WC and am a huge Flyers fan. This is not acceptable. These fans should be thrown in jail for a long time. Idiots like these guys give the true fans a bad name

Clearly our society is too stupid to understand the problem, why it occurs and how to resolve it. The explanations written here on CBSSports just go to show why the the problems will continue on. Morons complaining about morons from what I see here. My comments are not aimed at the few posters who are making sence.
