Flyers fans attack Rangers fans after Classic

Fan-on-fan violence has hit hockey again and unfortunately for the good fans of the Philadelphia Flyers, it will further sully their overall bad reputation.

The Winter Classic was great. It was a fun event, turned out to be a really entertaining game and sure seemed to be a hit in Philadelphia to me. Despite the large numbers of New York Rangers fans I saw in attendance, there was nothing more than a few boos for the Blueshirt fans walking around the stadium before the game.

It was after the game that things got rough.

When you want a quick meal in South Philly, where do you go? Geno's Steaks, of course, one of the most renowned Philly cheesesteaks in the world. Naturally, there were fans of both the Rangers and Flyers waiting in line when a fight broke out. I'm not even sure if fight is the right word, more like an assault.

Here is video of the incident and Philadelphia Fox 29's story. (NSFW warning: there is some cursing.)

Apparently proud of their efforts, you can hear one of the attackers telling the Rangers fan that was just knocked cold to "go to [expletive deleted] sleep."

What was the cause of the disturbance, was it some postgame trash talk that heated everybody up? According to the Fox report, it was a situation where the Flyers fans bribed a local window washer to come and squirt the Rangers fans with water. That led to the hostilities boiling over and the above being the result.

One of the two Rangers fans that was assaulted is reportedly a police officer who was off duty. He was taken to a hospital in North New Jersey near his home, in the Woodbridge township. From the Star-Ledger:

"He took a severe beating," township spokesman John Hagerty said, adding that the officer was taken to a hospital, where he required stitches to close wounds. Hagerty refused to release the name of the officer, though News 12 New Jersey identified him as Neil Auricchio Jr., an Iraq war veteran.

Thanks to Facebook and SB Nation's Broad Street Hockey -- and one person's intelligence -- the Philadelphia police have a pretty good lead. Check out the information that Broad Street Hockey's Travis Hughes dug up and turned over to the police.

The dispute might not have been related to the game, I don't know, but what I can deduce is that these Rangers fans were picked partly because they were wearing blue instead of orange. It's stories like this that will continue to dissuade fans to wear opposing team colors to games, a sad development if I may say so.

This is the second fan violence incident in hockey in a little more than a week. You'll recall the story in San Jose of a 16-year-old girl being hit over the head and concussed at a Sharks game because she was wearing a Canucks jersey. In that case it was one hit and the accused attacker said it was an accident. There is no using that excuse in this melee.

It's great that thugs like him are also stupid.  Too funny, except for the victims.

You can re-title the artcle to read, "Punks in Flyers Jerseys Beat Up Guys In Rangers Jerseys."  "Flyers fans" did nothing.  It was just a couple of jerks.  I don't know any Flyers fans that would even think to do something like this.  Not one.  It just shows that in any population, there are always a few jerks and given the right circumstances those jerks can become violent.

I have been a victim of sports violence.  My situation happened in Orlando while watching an Eagles Bucs playoff game on TV in a sports bar.  I was watching the game in my Eagles jerseys with my wife and 2 young childern.  I will never do that again.  In front of my kids I was picked on by 8 Bucs fans (all men) who tried as hard as they could to get me into a fight with them.  Other Bucs fans sat buy passively.  These 8 guys spit in my face and on my kids and I feel lucky to have gotten out of that bar alive.  During the entire event I didn't say a word to them.  I was not being obnoxious.  I did nothing to cause the altercation, except wear my Eagles jersey.

All that said, I don't think all Bucs fans are jerks.  It was just a few losers.  They are everywhere and in every city and if you don't understand that, you are a moron.  Let me give everyone a little tip I learned...  If you are going to an opposing stadium to watch a sporting event, don't wear your team colors and don't cheer for your team.  In any stadium in the country, that in itself is playing with fire.

SoreLoser2, you are admitting then that YOU are the as s hole here, and try to PICK FIGHTS WITH EAGLES FANS WHO WALK AWAY. Your proving every Philly fan's point on here that 1. we're not all violent, 2. when we are, we're not always the ones to instigate it, and 3. EVERY OTHER TEAM HAS IDIOT FANS AS WELL.

Wrong,i never start with anyone at MSG,Giants Stadium,Yankee Stadium,Atl games Dallas Games.I go here and the heckle us fans, which i think its ok,but when your fan base starts getting personal and wants to take it to another level, its them not me.And sir I dont back down i give it back, and i prevent any fighting till its brought to me,which has happened, but i guess those fans were alone on it and thought cause Philly is known to be Tough i would back down.Wrong as soon as i get ready to fight them 1 on 1 they sit down like little girls, but im sure if it was 3 or 4 on 1 they would be ready to go toe to toes.Like the above video shows 5 on 2.

went to a Jets/Pats game with my buddy wearing his NE jersey, and we had to walk away, head down, through a gauntlet of Jets fans cursing and throwing things at us
That's a true statement. But only because JETS fans are similar in terms of knuckle dragging level.
What's the top (or bottom, I guess) three? I'd say, 1. Philly, 2. Raiders, 3. JETS

i've traveled to Philly for both a Met and Giant game vs. Philly teams.  I've also gone to Foxboro, Oakland, Baltimore, Buffalo, Miami and KC for games.  The fans if Philly are the worst and angriest I've ever seen.  They are a bunch of disrespectful drunks for the most part.  This should surprise nobody.  Now they will get the just punishment, they decided to pick on the wrong guy (a cop).  And then the idiots decide to brag about it online.
