Brad Marchand suspended five games for clipping

Brendan Shanahan's verdict is in for Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand and his clipping on Vancouver's Sami Salo: It's going to cost him five games.

Here is the very interesting explanation from Shanahan on the ruling.

On Sunday, Marchand said that he was defending himself on the play, echoing the comments of his coach Claude Julien. Citing that he's a short player, he was trying to avoid what he thought was a hit coming from Salo. In a few videos this season, Shanahan has explained that he believed the player's assertions on their intentions. Obviously that's not the case here.

Shanahan called the hit "predatory," nothing that they believed he had no intention on the play but to hurt Salo with the hit. That mission was accomplished, by the way. Salo was diagnosed with a concussion after the game.

"While we understand that in certain circumstances, a player may duck or bail instinctively in order to avoid an imminent or dangerous check, we do not view this play as defensive or instinctive," Shanahan explained. "Rather, we feel this was a predatory, low hit delivered intentionally by Marchand in order to flip his opponent over him.

"Further, Salo is not coming at Marchand with great speed, nor in a threatening posture. He does nothing to indicate that Marchand is about to be hit illegally or with excessive force. To be clear, we do not consider this to be a defensive act where there were no other options for Marchand."

It's a very detailed explanation, even including the 20 or seconds before the hit where the two collided on the boards in a much less vicious manner. Marchand then threw a couple of jabs at Salo's back, something that Shanahan took note of.

A short while later, Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli released a statement expressing the team's frustration with the ruling.

"While we respect the process that the Department of Player Safety took to reach their decision regarding Brad’s hit on Sami Salo, we are very disappointed by their ruling.

"While we understand that the Department of Safety is an evolving entity, it is frustrating that there are clear comparable situations that have not been penalized or sanctioned in the past.

"It is equally disappointing that Brad sought the counsel of the Department this past Fall for an explanation and clarification regarding this type of scenario so as to adjust his game if necessary. He was advised that such an incident was not sanctionable if he was protecting his own safety.  Given our feeling that Brad was indeed protecting himself and certainly did not clip the player as he contacted the player nowhere near the knee or quadricep, today’s ruling is not consistent with what the Department of Player Safety communicated to Brad."

Remember, too, that Marchand has a history of disciplinary action. He was suspended last season and was fined earlier this season for a slew-foot.

This puts a wrap on really a weekend full of Canucks-Bruins. The animosity between these two teams is astonishing.

UPDATE: Marchand is apparently doing a season-long diary with ESPN Boston. Here is his most recent entry that he posted late on Monday night after the suspension. Among the highlights is Marchand insinuating Vigneault has a lack of class and denying he plays to hurt people.

Dear Perry

You expect us all to believe that you have special info on top level meetings? Impressive ESP you have going there!
caper, its right in the article if you bothered to read it, that yes Marchand had a meeting about these types of hits.

i have no problem with a suspention but damn be consistent!!! Lucic was hit the same way, LOW, in the finals by Hamhuis.
be consistent thats all

Brad Marchand suspended five games for clipping

No it's called I read about my team. I have read every report about this since Saturday. I'm not defending Brad and saying he is a saint but when you are told before camp what he has done in the past is fine why is this time different? People just like to say it's cheap cause Marchand isn't on their team. Anyone who says they wouldn't want him on their club don't want to win. Brad is a winner and doesn't back down like all those wusses in Vancouver.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT????  The league NEVER ONCE told him it was ok to clip a player like he just got suspended for, the league told him if he was defending himself from taking a dangerous hit that would be a different story and he could do certain things.

Brad Marchand was NOT defending himself at all in this case.  He INTETIONALLY tried to hurt another player.  If you don't see that, you are as blind as they come.

Unreal.  The Bruins get to the finals and win a cup one time post world war two and suddenly yahoos like you are all over these boards making our brain hurt with stupid comments like that.

Grow up man.  What are you, 14 years old or something?

Why can't you just tell it like it is. Be a man about it... Marchand TRIED TO HURT SOMEBODY and got suspended.  Is he a good player? Sure he is, and so is Matt Cooke.  But players like this don't belong in the NHL if this is what they are going to do...

But now if something he does is even marginal he will get nailed because of reputation. One example
with your Steeler avatar he will be the NHL's James Harrison, even if he is borderline it's all past reputation.

According to Weise he wanted to fight McQuaid. Ya that's a smart move. Let's just face the fact he wet his pants and wanted to save money from facial reconstruction surgery

Caper, by respectable and stand up, do you mean biting an opponent's fingers, five guys jumping Shawn Thornton, and Weise agreeing to fight and not dropping his gloves with Thornton?  Are those the respectable stand up plays you speak of?

How about Bergeron actually shoving his fingers intentionally into Burrows mouth. Bruins have had 5 guys jump someone plenty of times as well this season.  And Weise isn't a heavyweight.  Only idiots think there isn't tiers in the fighting guild.  Thornton is a pussy for going after Weise, Thornton goes after middleweights and if he does fight a heavyweight like a MacIntyre or Orr its rare and he has his ass handed to him.

Stop talking out your arse.  Thanks

Lucic waited and watched - then left the bench. Sure he helped his guy out but we'd all do the same and take the penalty like men. Boston fans can't seem to distinguish respectable stand up plays from dirty crap although they all cried foul when Rome pasted Horton during the playoffs. Vancouver took the suspension... yada yada... Defend your good players Boston - like Ference and his gorlfriend McQuaid...

Hearing about the penalty I thought that it was a joke but now that I saw what he did in the video, WOW no doubt he deserves some time off.  Really stupid and dangerous move on Brad's part.  Reading the Bruin GM's comment it appears he hasn't seen the video either.  Brad clearly hit Salo's knee.  I will use the video as evidence.  Play hockey Brad and don't try to injure your opponent.

Gee Bagdad Woody - you really don't know anything about hockey do you?

Little jerks like BM bowel movement Marchand have talent. They are also gutless little twits who don't mind trying to end someone's career with dirty play. The little BM got what he deserved.
