Mike Smith made one of the saves of the year

The Phoenix Coyotes lost to the New York Rangers in a shootout on Tuesday night, 2-1, but it's hard to put any of the blame on goaltender Mike Smith. He stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced through regulation and overtime, and did everything he could to keep his team in the game and give them a chance to win.

He only had to face one shot during the five-minute overtime period, and it couldn't have come in a tougher situation as he had to face New York's best goal-scorer, Marian Gaborik, on a penalty shot.

Not only did Smith get the best of Gaborik on the shot, he did so by making one of the best saves we've seen so far this season.

Awesome save. Of course, there's also a bit of luck there as well. If Gaborik gets any sort of elevation on that shot it's in the back of the net and the game ends at that point. But Gaborik didn't, and Smith made the highlights.

Gaborik, however, would get his revenge in the shootout by beating Smith in the third round.

Nice save. Made even better that it happens late in OT (drama). Luck being involved has a canceling effect...Smith had good luck, Gaborik had the bad luck. Gaborik made the nice deek to get an open net shot, but Smith made an even better recovery.

What do you mean if "Gaborik gets any sort of elevation"? He did. That's what makes this more luck than a great save. Smith should have had his stick sweeping the ice but it was a few inches off the ice when he came around. Gaborik could have easily slid the puck under the stick and scored but the goalie's job is to take away the ice and force him to lift the puck to score, which Gaborik did. Smith never gave up on the puck, which is good, but he's lucky that his stick coincided with where Gaborik shot the puck.

Mike Smith made one of the saves of the year

WOW! I cannot believe how many people are putting this save down as not a big you guys must know very little about hockey and goaltending or you just cant stand anyone outside of your team getting any credit for doing something awesome.

That was a GREAT save. Have there been better this year? Yes but that does not mean this was not a great save.

The way everyone makes this seem so easy then I have one challange for you....go put the gear on and see if you can do it!

I happen to be a goalie and know that things like this are not that easy to do. Did luck play a part in it? Ofcourse it did...but you can play that card on almost all saves a goalie makes. Look at Tim Thomas save last year against Downie in game 7...that was partial Luck...any higher Downie has a goal...

Anytime a goalie makes a great save like this it is part skill and luck. The goalie is putting his glove, paddle, body or whatever in the best possible position he can to make a save...thats the skill part...but the luck part is how the shooter puts it on or not gaborik messed up or not it doesnt matter...Smith had to make the save and he did...

Awesome save...From a Flyers fan...

Mike Smith made one of the saves of the year

Yeah, if it was Thomas or Howard or whoever else it would of been OMG what a save, but the fact that is was Smith and the Coyotes, it's like who gives a crap. Typical Coyote haters.

Mike Smith made one of the saves of the year

Come on ya got to be kidding?  That was ONE of the better saves of the year.  Smith had to recover from a swift right to left move from Gaborik and jump to get his blocker and stick in the path of the shot.  Look close and you can see that the goalie stick was so close to the puck coming off the stick of Gaborik that it didn't have much a chance even if it was lifted.  Some serious blinders there or homerism.  Suppose it was "luck" throughout the game where Smitty kept the Yotes in the game?

I'll go one better, leed...  It wasn't a very good save at all - it was luck.  Smith was beat so badly - and I don't know how, with that (lack of a) move - that the only thing he could do was flop back and get his stick on the ice.  As Gretz at least mentioned - had Gaborik gotten any lift, he would have scored.

Tukka Rask made a better save on a PS last night against Winnipeg.  And even that one wasn't all that difficult.

Mike Smith made one of the saves of the year

I must be missing something. I see a good very save yeah ,  save of the year ???? Not even close I mean
what was he supposed to do in that situation , he stuck out the paddle and made the save see it all the time.
Frankly I have seen far better , unless we are talking calendar year not season . I was never good with semantics.

What a save, it was incredible. Most snipers are not good in the shootout. They score their goals with quick releases and getting themselves into the seams for open shots. Prime example is Jagr, he would never go in the shootouts and they were all over him for it. It is a totally different scenario. I am sure each team would take their scorers ability during the games over their shootout records.
