Sean Avery, currently playing in the American Hockey League for the Connecticut Whale, was a healthy scratch on Friday night for what was simply referred to as "disciplinary reasons." What he's being disciplined for at this point remains unclear, but in the wake of the benching rumors started to circulate that he had spit on his head coach, Ken Gernander, a rumor that the Rangers (and Avery) have since denied.

The Rangers claim the benching was based on a combination of things, but that Avery did not spit on his coach, or anybody else.

Avery then took to his own personal Twitter account (which he has since deleted)  to continue his defense and posted the following early Saturday afternoon: “Try not to BELIEVE everything u read. Gentlemen don’t spit.”

One of the NHL's most well known on-ice (and off-ice) agitators, Avery has appeared in just 15 games for the Rangers this season scoring three goals. During his brief stay with the big club he was used sparingly, playing just a little over seven minutes per game. He started the season in the AHL playing for the Whale, and was called up to the Rangers in early November.

The team placed him on waivers at the end of December, and there were reports this past week that at least one NHL team asked the Rangers to place Avery on re-entry waivers so they could claim him. The Rangers did not do so.

Controversy is nothing new to Avery as it's always had a way of following him around, one way or another, throughout his entire career. Between his back-and-forth from the NHL to the AHL, this latest incident, and his little run-in with the law (that he was eventually cleared of), this season has been no different.
