The Dallas Stars locked up what they consider to be one of their franchise players on Monday morning by signing defenseman Alex Goligoski to a four-year contract extension that will pay him $18.4 million, which comes down to an annual salary cap hit of $4.6 million.

Said general manager Joe Nieuwendyk, “Alex Goligoski is one of our core players and we are very pleased to get him under contract during the prime of his career. Alex is a character person and one of the anchors of our blue-line. He’s a big part of our hockey club.”

The 26-year-old defenseman was acquired by the Stars last season in the deal that sent forward James Neal and defenseman Matt Niskanen to Pittsburgh. Neal has since turned into one of the NHL's top goal-scorers for the Penguins, while it was a trade that saw both teams deal from a position of strength to fill a position of weakness. Since arriving in Dallas Goligoski has been one of the Stars' top defenseman.

He's missed some time this season due to injury, but has been their power play quarterback and logs more minutes per game than any other player on the team. It's certaily not a cheap contract for the Stars, but that seems to be the going rate for defensemen that can skate, produce offensively and play a ton of minutes every night, as Goligoski can.

In 59 games since the trade he's scored 10 goals to go with 20 assists for Dallas.

Had he and the team not come to an agreement on a new deal before July 1 he would have been eligible to become a restricted free agent. Now that he's signed for the next four years, the Stars have three of their top defenseman -- Goligoski, Stephane Robidas and Trevor Daley -- all signed for at least the next three seasons and taking up just a little more than $11 million in salary cap space.

Alex Goligoski signs 4-year extension with Stars

Not to be a jerk, but this is a pretty heft contract for a player I've never heard of. Yeah, I don't see many Stars games, but I follow the league pretty closely and haven't heard of this dude.

Seems like a lot of money to me...

Goligoski was well liked by the fans in Pittsburgh but this deal has worked for everyone. Neal has been better than expected, especially since the thought was he would skate with Sid and that has rarely happened. Niskanen has been solid for us as well and he was just an extra piece thrown in to the deal. I wish the best for Goligoski, I followed him coming up through Wilkes-Barre and always had high hopes for him.

Bob I agree 100 percent.  Considering the crazy d-men contract signings this past summer, Goligoski's deal seems at least about a million dollars per season low.  If Jovanovski at 36 years old signed a 4 year deal at a 4 million dollar cap hit then I'd like to believe this kid is worth more then 4.6.

Keeping Goligoski or Letang was a nobrainer.

Neal couldn't buy a goal last season but was money in the shoot outs. This year he's hit his stride and works really well with Malkin.

Niskanen is the guy overlooked in the trade, for me he's been very solid if not spectacular for the Pens.

It's rare that two teams deal from a position of strength, even moreso for one to luck out on the trade dramatically.

Offensive defensemen are rare in the NHL and the Pens had a stock of them, dealing Whitney for Kunitz was one that worked for both sides too. As other posters point out, getting him signed now means avoiding the lottery of rebuilding teams coming after him.

The Pens don't really miss Goli or Whitney but they'd miss Neal and Kunitz!

I think this is a good contract.   Nice work by Nieuwendyk imo.    With teams in the process of rebuilding like Min, EDM, and Calgary, combined with teams in need of a player with a similar skill set like Col, NJ, and Montreal, I think his market price would have been significantly higher this year.   I hope Gagliardi keeps Nieuwendyk around, it might be fun to see what he can do with some resources.

Good deal for the Stars.  While they probably still lack one superstar, Alex Goligoski was not a guy to lose.  Hopefully Jamie Benn can light a fire again like he had earlier in the season...the Stars aren't dead but the light is flickering....
