WASHINGTON -- The Boston Bruins had the honor and privilege to visit the White House and President Barack Obama on Monday, continuing a long tradition of sports champions being honored by the POTUS.

Not everybody was there -- the whole nation is looking at you Tim Thomas -- but the majority of the Bruins were. Heck, even old friend Tomas Kaberle made the trip in to visit the White House and take in his vetting of the Bruins for their Stanley Cup championship.

Here is video (apologies for the shakiness, a guy can only do so much holding a camera over his head) of the president addressing the Bruins and congratulating them.

Lord Stanley's Cup was there, so was NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. Former presidential candidate and Massachusetts senator John Kerry was there, parked out in the front row. The throng of media members surrounded all of the family members and people of the Bruins organization for the vetting. It was a special day for all the Bruins.

It also had the obligatory Zdeno Chara is tall talk and presidential jokes. Although his first one of the short ceremony was a bit more candid.

"The Bruins, the Sox, the Celtics, now the Patriots. Enough already, Boston," Obama said. "What's going on, huh?"

The only downside to the afternoon was the absence of Thomas, who elected to skip the event on his own merit.

"He chose not to come. The reasons behind it I think he'll make the media aware through his Facebook," Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said after the ceremony.

It put a damper on the day for the Bruins, the story of Thomas being a no-show, but not too much. For the players it was still a treat. I had the chance to catch up with Brad Marchand afterward in the Diplomatic Room and the excitement of the day was still very evident, even after the president gave Marchand a little ribbing, noting one of his many nicknames of the "Little Ball of Hate."

It was a day fit for champions, and almost all of them were there. Almost.

Thomas is immature & out of line

Dear Tim Thomas,

This was an immature, petulant, classless, selfish move.

The President invited your TEAM to honor your accomplishments as a sporting club. He didn't invite you to talk about politics or as a referendum on his time in the White House.

If you truly felt that upset by his behavior and actions, how about this - you go and meet the man, shake his hand, and tell him you'd love to discuss politics with him sometime. That would have been mature and classy.

As it is now, you made it about yourself and showed your narcissism and self-importance. I'd be very angry if I was your teammate, your coach, or your employer.

Stand up, go to the White House, and accept the honor. You did nothing but show your own myopia and narcissism.

And on a related note, just about every single professional athlete should steer far, far clear of politics, commenting on life, society, and most things in the world beyond the field/rink/arena. You have been trained and coddled to be a pro athlete from your teenage years. Your grip on reality and your understanding of things is inadequate. Many of you stopped paying attention in junior high, leaving your brain undeveloped. You and Schilling deserve each other, two fools who should stick to sports.

Silky Smooth parrots right wing talking points. If Tim Thomas is going to play the role of US Patriot he should respect the office of President, no matter who holds it at the time.

Hooray for Tim Thomas.  The world needs more stand up guys like him.  BO and the Lib/Progressive machine fear what he has to say and represents to many in this country.  Number one if they are voted out of office their power is gone and they will no longer march this country to a EU Socialist style country.  TT is the 1% that is so sharply criticized and demonized these days.  Since when has it become vulgar to be rich in this country?   Thats what attracted immigrants to this country in the first place.  BO stands for all the wrong things, entitlement, food stamps, big government and a welfare society.  TT called this charlatan out are you?

I would have had a lot more respect for TT if he put that statement out there, but went anyway. (Obviously leaving out the part where he wasn't going in the original statement) Politics is a lot like sports, you love one side and hate the other with some grey in the middle. If TT was so smart, he should have included some solutions to his gripes. It's easy to blanket your disgust in a broad way without having the answers. If your going to take your ball and go home, how is anyting going to get solved?

In today's world, much easier to be against something than for something.

Drizzle 41......perfectly said! I can't improve upon what you wrote. The problem with our country is that there are not enough Tim Thomas' in the world, people willing to stand up for their principals in a respectful way. Too many people on each side of the fence are content to throw mud at the other party. Our founding fathers would be disgusted with this and would respect Tim Thomas for eloquently expressing his view in an appriate manner. WTG TT!

I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.

This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.

Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.

This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic. TT

Anyone that is calling TT a Right Wing Nut obviously didn't read this.  I am not Left or Right wing...I vote for who I have the most faith in.  At this point in our country I don't think I could say who I am going to vote for but TT said it pretty well, and pretty clrear..."this is not about politics or party".  The whole system is broken and the easy man to blame is the man behind the wheel but anyone with common sense would see that this is beyond one man, one party.  As a Flyer fan it is easy to not want to like TT, but I respect his opinion in this case.  However it is a lot easier to be disgusted by the political hatred that is being thrown around by those that refused to READ the TT statement and drawn their own uninformed opinion...that same mentality is what will continue to drive this country apart.

Good for Tim Thomas. Why should any of us act like its some great opportunity to go spend time with the politicians who have been screwing us forever? I have no respect for the democrat or republican parties, and wouldn't want to spend any time around them either.

I personally feel that his boycott is just dumb. He would be better off trying to disscuss his problems to the president mono to mono.

If you think the President or any other politician in Washington cares what Tim Thomas has to say about the government being out of control, you are naivie.  The politicians have every reason to continue the path this country is on because that is how they get rich and stay powerful, why would they want to reduce that in anyway?  They are all pushing for more government and more control and trying to use class warefare and racism to get what they want, OWS = Acorn = Socialism.
