Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin has been suspended three games for a hit delivered on Sunday afternoon, the NHL announced on Monday evening.

The hit occurred early in the second period, with the Capitals trailing 2-0, and as he and Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek went into the corner for a loose puck Ovechkin delivered a hit to the head along the boards. There was no penalty called on the play.

"Ovechkin has Michalek lined up for what could and should be a clean, hard body check," said Shanahan on his latest suspension video. "However, he launches himself to deliver the hit on Michalek.

"Although Michalek's shoulder might be the initial point of contact for this hit, the act of launching causes contact to Michalek's head. Often on big hits or collisions a player's feet will come off the ice slightly as a result of the impact. This however is not one of those occassions. Ovechkin drives up, launching and recklessly making contact with Michalek's head."

Shanahan also added that he accepts that Ovechkin did not intend to hit Michalek in the head, but said "the moment Ovechkin launches himself in the air prior to the hit, he becomes responsible for any contact to the head."

Ovechkin's prior history was also taken into account, as he has been suspended twice and fined twice previously in his career. Back in 2009 he received a two-game ban for a knee-on-knee hit to Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason. He also suspended that season for a boarding incident involving Brian Campbell.

He will miss Washington's upcoming games with Boston, Tampa Bay and Florida. Obviously that game against the Panthers, which will take place on Feb. 1, is a big one as the Capitals and Panthers are currently in a back-and-forth fight for the top spot in the Southeast Division. He will be eligible to return to the Capitals lineup on Feb. 4 against the Montreal Canadiens.

Even though he's currently suspended, he will be eligible to play in next weekend's All-Star game in Ottawa.

His absence also adds to the current problems facing the Capitals as the team is already playing without center Nicklas Backstrom and top defenseman Mike Green. Washington is starving for offense right now, and this won't help.

Even though Michalek was on the receiving end of the hit from Ovechkin, he also had a disciplinary hearing with Shanahan on Monday for a hit he delivered in the same game on Capitals forward Matt Hendricks (you can watch it right here). While Ovechkin was suspended for three games, Michalek will not be disciplined for his hit, which will only add more fuel to the fire when it comes to (the lack of) consistency and NHL discipline.

Alex Ovechkin suspended 3 games

Hockey is still positioning themselves in the US Marke..ice time is incredibly hard to get  for many new "little league" hockey programs that are springing up..I was stunned to see ice hockey in Midland/Odessa Texas..which is the center of Friday Night Lights..Ovechkin is a name that new hockey fans and especially youngsters can identify with..baseball has made a living at this for 75 years of All Star Games and that is why is Ovie is on the team.

I love how people bring up Ovechkins past. His last suspension was 18 months ago, so he was no longer a repeat offender under the NHLs rules. Now, does he deserve to be suspended? Yes. He hit the head, accidental or not it deserves a suspension. But a 10 game suspension as some of you are saying? Thats outrageous. I feel the current three game ban (or even a four or five game ban) is enough.

While it may be true it has been over 18 months since his last suspension, he's not going to get the benefit of doubt on any of his hits. I think that is why Michalek ended up getting off for his hit. He's played 7 years in the NHL and has never been thought of as a dirty player. That along with how Hendricks crouched down. I still would have given Michalek a game or 2, but I think Shanahan realizes that Michalek isn't that type of player based on his entire career. You can't say the same about Ovechkin.

I agree 10 games would be too much based on what other players have gotten and since he hasn't been suspended for a while. Although, I think they should get more strict with these headshots. It doesn't seem to be stopping guys from doing it. Every other night there's a new "will he be suspended?" thread.

Ovie just needs to quit leaving his feet. That's the message from the league here. He has a habit of doing that and it's needlessly dangerous for the other players on the ice. He has to hit more resposnibly and keep his skates planted when he makes his checks. If he hadn't left his feet, the hit would have been legal and he'd be on the ice for Wahsington in the very next game. If Cooke can change his ways then anyone can. The Caps need Ovie to stay on the ice. Taking dumb penalties and getting suspended for something that is a simple correction is not the way for him to do that.

Classic charge, with primary point of contact being the shoulder (Shanny's words) = 3 games. Hit from behind, elbow/forearm to the head (the exact hit the league claims to be "ridding"), slamming Hendricks face-first into the boards = where is the link to Michalek's suspension?

You're laughable, Brendan Shanahan. I never thought I'd say this, but bring back Colie.

Here's hoping Ovie skips the all-star game. The league shouldn't be allowed to profit off of him after this sham, plus he's not the draw he was a couple of years ago anyway.

Also, a belated thanks to the Penguin organization for not claiming Michalek was at all injured. If they had Ovie would have gotten twice the suspension.

98% of the players leave their feet. Watch it more carefully! He's not the only one. It's an epidemic. Only good hit I've seen is Andy Sutton believe it or not in tonites game. He crushed McGinn.

Ok all you Ovechkin haters, what's with all the whining. He got his games....do us Ovechkin fans (and I am one of them) like it no. Are we willing to except it sure. Is it too much, perhaps. If I was him I say, I'm suspended I can't play at the All Star game and take a few extra days off and say sorry Shanahan. But maybe the NHL fans would be upset, maybe there is another Ovie fan in Ottawa...just maybe? At least he didn't hit him in the numbers like that Michalek, I personally didn't like that hit. But I'm a little sick of your bitchin... By the way most of you are Pens fans, keep up the crying ya babies.

This isn't as bad a suspension for the Capitals as would have been even just a couple of years back. Ovechkin just isn't the same player he was. He is definitely not elite status anymore.

I have to wonder, if he's been suspended multiple times for illegal hits, how is it that he's "all star" enough for this weekend's game?

I think he should have gotten 10 games. If Obitchkin got suspeneded as any other player would 10 games would have fit here. What I mean by that is this: EVERY HIT ALEX DELIVERS HE JUMPS FOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why does a guy over 6 feet need to JUMP everytime he delivers a hit???? He should have been suspended more than just the 3 times Shanahan stated. I don't care how long ago his last suspension was he's been one of the best goal scorers in the game but he's also one of the biggest cheap shots. There shouldn't be a clock on how long ago your last suspension/fine was. If you've done it in the past and do it again you are a repeat offender. I get that he's a power forward but there's no need for 1/2 the stuff he does either jumping with his hits or the sticking his knee out on people who dodge his hits. He's not the only one but he gets away with it WAY more than anyone else.

Remember when Ovie used to be so good?  Wonder which enhancing drugs he stopped taking.
