We knew which players were going to be taking part in the All-Star game this season, but we had no idea which team they would be playing for and who they would be playing against. It was all settled in Ottawa on Thursday night as Senators forward Daniel Alfredsson and Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara, the two captains for this year's game, made their selections as you can see below in the order they were picked.

Chara won the coin toss and ended up with the first selection and chose Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk, and continued to load up on offense in the early rounds going with Evgeni Malkin, Marian Hossa and Phil Kessel.

Kessel, of course, was the last pick in the All-Star draft a year ago, but went in the eighth round this season. The last man standing this season was San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture

Two developments that should not have been a surprise to anybody: First, The Vancouver-Boston rivalry that started in last year's Stanley Cup Finals, and carried over into this season as we saw in their regular season matchup a couple of weeks ago, continued on as Chara did not pick a single Canuck.

That means that unlike last year when they were split up, the Sedin twins, Henrik and Daniel, will play on the same team as they've always done throughout their time in the NHL.

Also not a surprise: Alfredsson made sure to pick every Senator in the game, ending up with Erik Karlsson (his first pick), Jason Spezza (his second pick) and Milan Michalek.

2012 NHL All-Star Rosters

@primeal - the vast majority of the boos and comments were directed at members of the Toronto Maple Leafs, a team that the vast majority of Senators fans despise...that's called a rivalry. And unless you're a displaced Canadian living in Rochester, NH, I don't think you have any business commenting on our government when that of the US is in such disarray. So relax, put it back in your pants and stop being so ridiculous (oops! I mean "rediculous").

Mister...LMAO!!! Datsyuk not a top 10 Talent? Where have you been for the last 10 years? He is by far the BEST 2 way player in the NHL. You know that award for best 2 way play? Probably not, but anyways when someone takes it 4 straight times it would be time for you to shut up and stop talking out your ass. What, are you as concussed as Pronger dummy? I see about 10 names on there that DON'T belong, but what can you do when douche's like Ovie, voluntarily skip this thing. It's not like he has played a tour of duty in the league long enough to determine if he wants to go. Lidstrom on the other hand has done enough for his part in order to miss the game.

4x NHL All-Star, 4x Lady Byng winner, 3x Selke winner, 2x Stanley Cup Champion, 3rd in the NHL in points going into the All-Star break... Yeah Pavel Datsyuk, you suck, you shouldn't have been picked first... Seriously? I hate Detroit as much as the next guy, but Datsyuk is outstanding, he deserves it, and the guy who is on the ice whenever the league's best forwards are, recognizes him for the player that he is... Put your best foot forward? It's a mid-season All-Star game, no player is going to risk serious injury to play hard, and they don't have to, it isn't like baseball where they play for home field advantage, it's a show, and people turn out for it... The skills competition is the best part of the whole deal anyway

2012 NHL All-Star Rosters

The concept works but not when the captains pick their buddies every year instead of trying to win games. the fans deserve more, they deserve a team to pick to win no less. Datsuk isnt even one of the top 10, let alone first pick. NHL cant allow this to be a mockery, and so far it is. Players have to realize you arent picking for yourself you are picking for the game that is strictly a thanks to the fans and they deserve your best foot forward.

How bad were the Ottawa fans?  Not abit of class in that city.  The booing and obnoxious comments being yelled were so rediculous.  It reminded me of the bafoons in Canadian Parliament.  Here I thought it was just the politicians in Ottawa that were Idiots.  Nope it's everyone in that stupid city.  Thanks for making Canada look bad you garbage pile of a city.

And let's not forget Vancouver last year, oh Canada is on a roll....

2012 NHL All-Star Rosters

While these games are a waste of money and time, there are some interesting beneath the surface points at work- some of which are mentioned above.

For me, a Kings fan, the big one is that Quick was picked in the 3rd round overall and was the first non-Senator picked by Alfredsson. The Sens got a good look at Quick last week in L.A. in a 4-1 loss.

Everybody forgets about him, but a strong showing in his 20 minutes of glory might actually get people talking about him for a Vezina Nomination.

2012 NHL All-Star Rosters

This whole AllStar weekend is a joke and a cash grab by the NHL.
Betting line: over/under on bodychecks zero.

It is theater and bad theater at that.
