The Chicago Blackhawks added some center depth to their lineup on Friday evening by acquiring Brendan Morrison from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Brian Connelly.

Morrison, 36, has four goals and seven assists this season in 28 games with the Flames, and is playing on a one-year contract worth $1.25 million. The Blackhawks will be on the hook for a salary cap hit of about $354,000 for the remainder of the season, so it's a relatively cheap pick up, not only financially, but also in the sense that they didn't have to give up much in return.

Connelly, a 25-year-old defenseman that signed with the Blackhawks organization back in 2009 after playing his college hockey Colorado College, has spent his entire professional career playing for the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League scoring 21 goals to go with 105 assists. In 44 games this season he has five goals and 31 assists.

Morrison isn't going to provide much offense for the Blackhawks, but with players like Jonathan Toews and Dave Bolland logging the big minutes down the middle they only need some depth at the position. If nothing else, he gives Chicago another solid option in the faceoff dot as he's currently winning over 50 percent of his draws this season.

It is kind of interesting to see the Flames deal a veteran for a prospect that's already in his mid-20's when they're still in the playoff race, and just recently added Mike Cammalleri from Montreal. General manager Jay Feaster said it was mainly due to their projected lineup going forward, as well as Morrison's status as a free agent after this season.

“As we projected our line-up going forward we felt it was going to be difficult for us to find a spot for Brendan or get him significant ice-time,” said Feaster. "Given his pending UFA status and the fact that we were not going to re-sign him, we felt it important to try to move him for another asset. In Brian Connelly we obtain a 25 year old highly skilled AHL All-Star defenceman who is still a legitimate prospect. We are excited to have Brian in the organization.”

Nash is coming to Chicago for Stalberg, Pirri and a draft pick.

Nice move by Hawks. I saw Connelly play a couple of times w/ the Hogs. He is very good AHL player but he may be too small to play D in the NHL. He's generously listed at 5'11" and 185. But that being said, the smallish Brian Rafalski comes to mind. He didn't do all that poorly in the big leagues.
Maybe an unfair comparison though. After all, Rafalski was on the NHL All Star rookie team paired w/ Brad Stuart.

Morrison fills a more obvious depth need for Chicago and his value will be easy to recognize if he's needed.    Connelly was a redundant d-man for Chicago's system.   Neither were likely to be resigned, so there is little downside in the  for either organization.   &nbs

I like this deal for the Hawks, depth is very important come playoff time.  Depth both offensively and in the back end in my opinion is what's kept the Wings from succeeding against the Sharks the last couple seasons in the playoffs.  Hawks lose nothing that affects them for this season or next.   If Morrison plays well, great move by Chicago.  If he doesn't, nothing is really lost....

Little risk here...

(1)  You don't lose anyone in dealing Connelly.   The Hawks are so deep down at Rockford it's funny.

(2)  Morrison = Madden.  A veteran center who will come in and add smart play and be there for the short term--giving them the center-help they need in the middle.

(3) A cap-hit of only $354,000 means that Bowman could STILL make yet another move if needed after making the smart financial decisions in the last two off-seasons.

This was a brilliant move!

Connelly may prove to be a very smart move for Feaster.   He's trying to revamp and retool the system and the team in Abbottsford is terrible offensively, Connelly will have a great offensive impact on that team and may really help the play making ability and confidence of the prospects in the Calgary system.   He may see some occasional time with the big team, but I think his stronger contributions to Calgary will be to help the prospects get better with the puck in the offensive zone.     I think it's going to be one of those little moves for Calgary that goes under the radar but will really help them get Abbotsford better able to develop skilled prospects.

It was a more obvious trade to make for Stan Bowman because of Morrison's skill set, but I think it was a very deft move by Feaster as he improves the system without writing the team off for the postseason.

I don't know Connelly, but this seems like a good deal for the Black Hawks.  They get 4th line depth in exchange for a tiny bit of cash and a so-so (?) prospect...

A good solid pickup with no downside. The didn't give up anything and on this team Morrison can provide depth , a rest for the two top centers and still produce at an acceptable level. Good move towards the playoffs.

Morrison might come in handy if there's an unexpected injury/suspension. He's decent, but well past being a game changer, if he ever was. A depth move, not much more....I hope:)
