We relayed to you a story over the weekend of Don Cherry saying that Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke isn't fond of the things Cherry has said about the Leafs and that Burke was even considering going to the CBC with his complaints.

Consider it done. From the Toronto Sun:

Maple Leafs president Brian Burke has admitted he did complain to the CBC about a Coach’s Corner segment in a bid to get them to “stop” the “vicious” criticism of his players and coach.

But, he said, it was not a personal complaint against Ron MacLean and Don Cherry, but was in the interest of protecting his team.

“I don’t dislike either of them,” Burke told QMI Agency Monday.

During the all-star weekend in Ottawa, Burke wouldn’t discuss whether he filed a complaint, saying the mid-season event was “hardly the time or place for a beef like this.”

Burke said he feels his confidence was somewhat betrayed.

“This is nuts,” said Burke, adding he “raised (the) issue quietly and professionally” and then “they leak it. Nuts.”

Nuts sort of describes the whole story, doesn't it?

Burke is an old-school guy, from lamenting the rats running the league to challenging Kevin Lowe to a fight in a barn set in the backwoods. An affront to him or his family (in this case, his team) will be dealt with.

One of the affronts in this case was Cherry referring to Leafs coach Ron Wilson as a Napoleon ype, saying “I don’t like him ... I don’t like the way he treats the players.”

But complaining about a national commentator's opinion of your team and coach? It's so hard for me to figure out when Burke is being professional and when he's being petulant. I mean I guess he could have challenged Cherry to a fight in a barn.

Everybody knows what/who Cherry is anymore, he's loud for the sake of being loud, his job is to entertain while also being a pundit. I don't know of anybody who puts much stock into what Cherry says in his weekly Coach's Corner segments. Except now for Burke.

The whole story underscores something that I find rather impressive: Burke's ability to succeed despite caring so much what others say. Usually, that's not a trait that will help somebody, particularly in a business like hockey in a market such as Toronto.

Burke admits to complaining to CBC about Cherry

The Cherry-Burke argument aside, as well as the complaint a great many has made about the extension given to Ron Wilson, I strongly believe he is making the trades that will put the Leafs as the team to beat. Yup, laugh, mock, deride, but bad trades are part of the industry. One cannot deny Burke's balls in making something happen, which is what most  IMPATIENT LEAF FANS WANT!!! (GOD DANGIT!) He's taking chances, making changes, changes the face of the team (which nobody can deny was an ABSOLUTE MUST). I must say, sport fans/followers are among the most impatient there is.

Yes, I am very aware of Toronto's dry spell (1968-present=no stanely cup), yet, this problem has been inherited by Burke, not created by Burke. He has a direction. Let's trust it; Let's follow it; let's go with it!

Let's remember, if he screws up, we'll lynch him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Burke admits to complaining to CBC about Cherry

In Vancouver he whined about the Officiating, the Media, the ice surfaces in various cities, plane rides and service, accomodations. other managers, various coaches, the League, many players, I think he kept the wives out of it though. which is good. But, you're kidding, right ? Who pays any attention to Cherry other than most of Canada, and 20 percent of American fans? It's all tongue in cheek, and harmless entertainment, til it gets to the Stanley Cup. Then it all becomes real, and relevant, and when for some the world stops, and others pure bliss in their lives.

Burke admits to complaining to CBC about Cherry

here's an idea...rather than complain about a national icon and what he has to say about your pathetic team how about you deliver on some of your promises...or any of them! 5 years under Burkie with zero playoff appearances, no top flight goaltender yet and the team still doesn't have a number 1 centre man! what have you done in 5 years Burkie? Now he's embarrassed that CBC leaked his stupidity...what a whiner!

Burke admits to complaining to CBC about Cherry

Burke has only himself to blame...if he would have built a hockey team that was competitive, Cherry would be just a side-show rather than the main event of Hockey Night in Canada..................Cherry is the only entertaining part of Saturday night...............

Burke admits to complaining to CBC about Cherry

Burke should shut his cakehole and spend his time worrying about what should be more important to him, like making his team better. He's never been anything but a loudmouth egomaniac. What Cherry said isn't far from the truth about Ron Wilson. The guy is an a$$, who for some reason, is coaching a Canadian team with everybody knowing full well the guy has zero respect for them. Cherry might be too agressive sometimes but not here. If any Canadian coach did the same thing (but he would'nt because of the respect that soldier deserve and have earned) to the U.S. military he be in the same hotseat. Only the fans in Montreal might pull that crap.

Cherry can't get over the clap

No one, including the article's author, has mentioned the actual reason Burke called the CBC.

Don Cherry criticized coach Ron Wilson, not for his coaching abilities, but his CLAPPING abilities. The Leafs had a "Tribute to the Troops" at a recent home game and Don Cherry railed against Wilson during his "Coaches Corner" segment saying that Ron Wilson didn't CLAP enough. Apparently Don was watching everyone's hands very closely and noted how much everyone on the coaches' benches were applauding.

Cherry was way out of line. Hockey Night in Canada used to be about hockey and Cherry chose to highjack yet another segment to ramble and bellow about the military and irresponsibly question a coach's politics, based on his hand gestures!

I am no fan of Wilson but at least he was focussed on the hockey game, as Cherry and Hockey Night in Canada should be.

Burke admits to complaining to CBC about Cherry

Burke, what a bush league move.  If you've got something to say to the man, say it to his face.  In a game founded on unwritten rules and the need for ultimate respect for other players...Burke disgraced himself and the Leafs.  Cherry only said what everyone already knew.  C'mon burky

Burke admits to complaining to CBC about Cherry

It's easy to pick on Cherry for saying he crapped on Wilson, but the fact are that the Leafs under Burke AND Wilson haven't done jack! How many playoff appearances have they made together? Amazing how both Wilson and Burke knew that when they accepted jobs with the Leafs that they would be under the microscope and not too mention be scrutinized by the local Leaf media almost daily. So he doesn't like what Cherry says, Big Deal! Last I checked, Wilson and Burke are not exactly what you would call the most personable people to get any kind of information out of. The guys are pricks and so when Cherry dumps on them what do they do? Go crying to the newtork like a bunch of whiny baby's. Suck it up and make the playoffs if you girls want people to stop talking negatively about your team. Say what you what you want Mr.Cherry, it's entertaining and honest.
