The Detroit Red Wings announced on Friday that All-Star goaltender Jimmy Howard suffered a broken pinkie in Thursday's shootout win over the Vancouver Canucks and will miss some time.

The good news is that right now the team is only committing to Howard missing the next two games. At that point he will be re-evaluated.

When the news of an injury first started leaking out, it was a cause of a bit of concern for the Wings. Howard plays almost every night, evidenced by the fact that he's giving a serious run toward the 50-win mark this season. If Howard were going to miss a couple weeks or more, the Wings' spot atop the West might not have been something they could hold.

However it doesn't seem like things will be that bad. They hope. It means veteran Ty Conklin will handle the starting duties while Howard is out and they called up Joey MacDonald from the AHL.

“The good news is it's his stick hand and it's the tip of the finger,'' general manager Ken Holland told MLive.com. “We won't have to wait until it's totally healed for him to play. He just needs a little time. He wants to stay with the team. He feels he won't be out too long.

“Jimmy will stay with us [on the trip]. When we get back to Detroit on Tuesday he'll see a doctor and we'll get a little better read on when he can play.

“Does he need a week? I don't know. We want to give him a little bit of time.''

Howard has played in 44 of Detroit's 52 games thus far this season, winning 32 of them. He also has a goals against average of 2.03 and a save percentage at .924. He's been nothing short of excellent for Detroit.

Conklin has a .886 save percentage and 3.20 GAA in his limited action this season, so the drop is more like a black diamond than a bunny slope.

All good points 69. I, too, agree that Conklin couldn't possibly show me enough either to warrant his being Howard's backup come playoff time or anytime. I think Babcock's hook of him after that dismal 1st period vs. the Oilers speaks volumes. He's had it! (As we all have).  It was a mistake to sign him. I expect Holland is busy crunching numbers and looking at Nabby and others who might be available.

Wings' Howard breaks finger, out couple of games

Re: redwings1969

I would like to see Nabokov in a Wings sweater but i think the Isles are going to ask for to much.  I also think that the Wings need a 3rd pair Dman.  Kindl just isnt working out this year.  I like what Commedore brings but i would like some depth for the playoffs.  Id also like to see the Wings pick up a 2nd/3rd line winger, if the price is right.

That was good, thank you, left knee, my back is hurting this afternoon and I needed a laugh. Hockeybob, how 'bout you; "go do that vodoo, that you do, so well" on Don Cherry. Now that would be hilarious.

Papajon..
he will almost cetainly have some sort of splint over the top knuckle if it is a "pinkie finger tip" as it was reported. And he could play because it is his stick hand. The problem is if it was a pinkie finger tip as reported, that means it is his likely his left knee.....

Redwings 1969 hey I think u guys will be fine with Conklin as your backup. If he can regain his form and play the way he did for Pittsburgh when they had him. He's a good goalie , only reason the wings signed him back. He has the chance the shine now while Howwy is out. I think he'll do just fine.

Good one lulz. I guess nows the time to find out if Conklin is going to be in a Wings uniform come the trade deadline. Better now than later.

Rick.  Conklin couldn't possibly show me enough in the next 3 weeks where I could trust him as being our backup goalie for the playoffs.  In my opinion the Wings need to find a really good backup goalie for Howard, just in case catastrophe strikes we can still have a chance at getting to the finals and another stanley cup.

People sometimes forget our last stanley cup win and finals appearance the year after that doesn't happen if Chris Osgood wasn't between the pipes.  For all the credit the Wings have gotten over the years Osgood never gets the credit he deserves.  Our last cup win doesn't happen if Ozzie doesn't relieve Hasek and play great the rest of the playoffs.  And the next season if we win game 7 against the Pens instead of losing that game Ozzie may very well have won the MVP award in the playoffs. He was that good...

Nabokov originally signed with the Wings, you know he would gladly leave New York to wear a Wings uniform. The question is what are the Islanders asking for and how many other teams will be bidding on him?  The guy has a 2.38 gaa and a 92 percent save percentage on a the Islanders, not bad at all.  I think he's a perfect backup for the Wings right now..... hopefully Holland finds a way and gets him to Detroit.
