Should the Jets be buyers?

As one of the lowest scoring teams in the NHL, averaging just 2.3 goals per game (25th in the league as of Wednesday afternoon) it's not a surprise that Winnipeg Jets captain Andrew Ladd would like to see some additional offense added to the team, especially after dropping a crucial 3-1 decision to the New York Islanders on Tuesday night.

The Jets have scored more than two goals in a single game just six times since January 1 (they've actually lost four of those games, for whatever that's worth) and are one of just two teams in the NHL that doesn't have a single player with at least 40 points this season (the Columbus Blue Jackets being the other). Blake Wheeler is currently leading the team with 38 points (10 goals, 28 assists).

Following Tuesday's game in Winnipeg, Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun asked Ladd about the Jets needs as the trade deadline approaches, and the captain offered a little hint as to what he would like to see coming into the locker room.

“With the troubles we’ve had scoring, if it’s not going to come from within this room, we probably could use some help there,” said Ladd, via the Sun. "We’ve got a great goaltender, we’ve got D that can move the puck and play both ways.”

Obviously, it's a reasonable request from a player -- and the captain -- that's putting everything he has on the line every night and isn't ready to give up on the season.

But how much sense does it make from a front office standpoint to look for trade deadline rentals in what appears to be a rather thin market when it comes to goal-scorers? Especially for a team that still has a tough fight just to get into the playoffs.

The Jets are four points out of a playoff spot as of Wednesday, and even though that doesn't seem like a huge gap, it's not exactly promising, either. As we pointed out earlier on Wednesday, the Jets might need to finish somewhere in the neighborhood of 17-5-3 to reach the 95-point mark that it usually takes to make the playoffs. Is there a player (or players) available to them via trade that would give them enough offense to push a team that's won just seven of its past 20 games to that level? Rick Nash might be that sort of player. But is that a realistic target? Once you get past him you're looking at guys like Ales Hemsky and, well ... that's about it on this trade market when it comes to top-six forwards.

The only way a pre-deadline deal that has the Jets adding something to their NHL roster makes any sense is if it's a younger player that's under contract for future seasons and will be a long-term part of the team. A deadline rental that probably still won't be enough to reach even the No. 8 seed isn't what this team needs to be using its resources and assets on right now.

I really hope we re-sign Slater and Glass.  I have a Slater jersey what a shame if it goes to waste after a year.

I'm not saying trade the future away.
A prospect is a player who you hope, key word "hope" pans out.  Keep that in mind.  I'm not saying Kane.  I'm not saying anyone in particular.  I'm saying that team who trade prospects for players that these prospects hope to play on the same level as one day are usually teams that win championships.  In all sports.

Should the Jets be buyers?

I do wish that I would have been lucky enough to be one of the guys to get season tickects, but I wasn't. I was a season ticket holder  from 1988 to 1996 though, and loved the atmosphere in our rink. we had a very entertaining and exciting team to watch back then and although there were some free agents back then, the nucleus of that team was built threw the draft. Don't get me wrong, I want to win now too, but at what expence? Lets give the new managment some time! Kane may never be a superstar like Gretsky or Crosby, but he's young, strong, has talent and will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

Should the Jets be buyers?

Don't take anythign personal.. I came off a little strong there.  I just really think winning is on the minds of this team, and a playoff spot would mean a lot to this city... especially the way the Bombers are falling apart right before our eyes....

Should the Jets be buyers?

"We are not suppost to make the playoffs are first year and I don't expect we will"
That's the attitude.
Why does this team play hockey?
The price thing has nothing to do with what I though I'd be paying, it has to do with me being at the MTS Centre every game, and living and dying with this team.  You really think these players and coaches are content with just being in the league here in Winnipeg?  Not a chance rebarman.

Should the Jets be buyers?

Kane hit the netting 3 times tonight. I really enjoyed that. I hope you didn't think the seats would be cheap in a small rink like ours. I just don't think that we should make any rash decisions to change the look of this team just yet. Carter, would be a good fit but what would he cost us? This team does need a couple of high priced free agents, but lets wait a while and pick a good fit if possible. We are not suppost to make the playoffs are first year and I don't expect we will. If we do great, it would be a tribute to the great hustle and goal tending this group of guy's has showed use!

Should the Jets be buyers?

I'm not happy just to have them back.  Not when I pay what I do for season tickets!  There is no such thing as a free pass in any league.  Who on this team has the potential to be a 90 point guy?  Kane? I doubt it.  Mayyybe once in his career will he score more than 35 goals in a season.  This team is being asked to over-achieve.  Just because a team is young doesn't mean they're going to be contenders.  This core is good, don't get me wrong, but they're not great.  Clearly we are missing a bonafide goal scorer (Kane isn't that guy).  Jeff Carter might be a bit more realistic.  He needs a change of scenery.

Should the Jets be buyers?

It's always nice to win, but for the Jets we are just happy to have them back.  To make foolish moves before the trade deadline woud be silly. If we could get Nash I would like that, he would fit in well with this teams work ethic. We are some time away from being a contendor, so why blow it up to make the playoffs in our first year. Our boys may not get the resuts that we want every night, but they play as hard as any team in the leauge.
