Brad Marchand called for clipping Alexei Emelin

Brad Marchand should probably expect another call from Brendan Shanahan in the near future.

In what was a chippy and penalty-filled affair between the Bruins and Canadiens on Wednesday night -- is there any other kind of meeting between them? -- Marchand was called for a two-minute minor for clipping Alexei Emelin. If that sounds familiar, it should. He was suspended five games earlier this season for clipping Canucks forward Sami Salo.

Here's a look at the play in question from this week.

Under most circumstances, this probably wouldn't warrant much attention from the league. But considering Marchand just recently was punished for breaking the same rule and the league frowns upon repeat offenders, this should at the least get a phone call.

In this case Marchand doesn't have much of a defense for going low, there was no threat of a hit coming from Emelin in this case. There's little doubt that he went very low, making plenty of contact below the waist on the check. But Emelin wasn't hurt on the play like Salo was and I suppose Marchand could say that it was just him slamming on the brakes.

Marchand is one of those players who plays on a fine line at all times and will cross it now and again. He admitted that he has to be reeled in from time to time. At the least, I'd expect Shanahan to do just that in this case if not more.

but as a Bruins a kind of hope he's not for the Bruins' sake.

Geez, I don't know what happened there.....it should read:

"...but as a Bruins fan I kind of hope......"

perry, I think he deserves a suspension, but as a Bruins a kind of hope he's not for the Bruins' sake. So, part of me hopes you're right, but remember the penalty he got on the ice really will have no bearing on whether he gets a suspension or not. Ovechkin got suspended last month for something that got no penalty on the ice, so I don't think Shanahan is going to concern himself with how the refs saw it in the moment. Rather, he's going to watch the video and make his own determination.

The reason the last one was a suspension was because it was called on the ice a 5 minute major and a game misconduct. This was simply a minor penalty and wasn't a bad one at all. It was a penalty. Just because a player is known for boarding don't mean they will never pick up another. Same in this case. This won't be Marchand's last because he is small and will draw this kind of penalty even when not trying to.

This won't be a suspension.  In fact, it wasn't even clipping, as Marchand's hip contacted Emelin on his thigh.

That being said, I'd give him a scratch, if I were Julien, just to send a message.

perry, I'm a Bruins fan and a Brad Marchand fan, but of course this deserves a suspension. He just came back from a suspension a few weeks ago for the same thing. How do you figure the NHL could suspend him for the previous one and then let a repeat offense pass?

I'm thinking at least 8-10 games. He got 5 for the last one and now he's done it again, and so soon after the previous indiscretion. So freaking stupid!  (I'm not calling you stupid, I'm calling Marchand's behavior stupid.)

We all know it won't happen by a cowardly Vancouver player. They just keep taking jab after jab to the face! I agree Marchand is getting out of control but I don't feel this case deserves a suspension. It deserved a penalty. It deserves a HEAVY fine. Then a healthy scratch from Julien on Friday if he does avoid a suspension. Nothing like a healthy scratch from your organization to smarten you up.

I am a life long B's fan and I have defended Marchand in the past but I have to agree with hockeybob on this one. Its starting to get rediculous with the negative news surrounding this guy and his gameplay. That hit was uncalled for.
