Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara just doesn't seem to have a whole lot of luck playing in Montreal.

You don't really need a reminder of what happened last season, but just remember how he checked Max Pacioretty and sent the Canadiens forward into the stanchion, resulting in a broken neck. It got so ugly that Montreal police debated for a long while whether or not to press charges on Chara or not. Eventually the answer was no.

As a result -- and being the Bruins captain -- they aren't fond of Chara in Montreal, the Habs fans aren't. So it shouldn't surprise that the Habs fans at the Bell Centre on Wednesday night experienced a little schadenfreude when Chara took a puck to the face.

It was an errant clearing attempt from Tomas Plekanec that caught Chara up high and left him bloodied. While Plekanec was checking up on Chara, the crowd was releasing some pent-up frustration.

Some are going to call it Montreal Typical of the fans to cheer an injury, no matter the player and trash the Habs fans. I've already seen plenty of it. But it's a bit understandable. Fans take it personally when players are injured on their favorite teams and they feel like the offender got away with it. It doesn't quite sit right with me to cheer an injury, but it's understandable.

Chara did return in the game, but his luck didn't get much better. He made an awfully careless play in his own end that led to Erik Cole's equalizer before the Bruins eventually won in a shootout.

Habs fans cheer Chara being hit by puck

Is is nice to cheer when a player on the opposing team gets a puck in the face?  No, it's not nice.   But there are some special circumstances here, everybody needs to relax before they call Habs fans classless.  Boston and Montreal are rivals, both fan bases hate each other and the players don't respect each other very much either.  Second of all Chara could have easily crippled a Montreal player a while back with that hit into the partition or whatever he hit.  Did he mean to do it?  I don't know, I'm not that phsychic named Chloe you see on tv so I can't read Chara's mind.  But I know this much, Boston and Montreal hate each other....  I'm totally ok with fans that hate a team and player to that degree cheering when the guy gets a puck in the face.  Maybe i wouldn't do it, but I understand why it happened.  Montreal has some pretty passionate hockey fans, they live and breathe hockey.

Habs fans cheer Chara being hit by puck

No they did not.

I won't post the link, but I'm sure even you know how to use a search engine...

"Police said they are acting on a request by Quebec's director of criminal and penal prosecutions, Louis Dionne. After evidence is collected, it will be determined if there are grounds for prosecution, they said."

I won't defend Hab fans per se, but listening to Bruins fans complain about Hab fans is the ultimate in hypocrisy. There's more than enough on both sides that are in dire need of growing up and one just needs to read the quality of posts here to grasp that.

Did the Mtl fans not flood the police stations with 911 calls after the Chara/Paciaretti incident??

All Canadian fans are classless.  The cold weather must really shrink their weenies and class.  Go figure they had such a poor showing during the Olympics before the whole world.  Take off..eh??

Bizona, first of all, I in no way intended to take a swipe at Bruins fans, but simply point out that this isn't news because it's just part of the sports vernacular in a heated rivalry. I agree with you that there are classless fans everywhere and Montreal is no exception - in fact I don't even go to games anymore because I find the general behaviour of most sports fans simply deplorable, even in my home town.

Secondly, to clear up an inaccuracy for the umpteenth time, the fans did not call for a police investigation following the Chara hit on Pacioretty - a single politician did and the police had no choice but to follow it up. From the perspective I gathered, be it phone ins on sports radio or general consensus from those who I spoke to, the vast majority of fans thought that the investigation was pointless and unnecessary - go figure - B and Hab fan in agreement about something.

Before you try to support any arguement that Hab fans are worse than any other, get this fact right - the anthem booing was always a language thing and not a nationality thing that would only rear its head when there were strained political and social issues locally. That in no way justifies it, but if you don't take it in context as a social pariah, you are misplacing it a sports phenomena. Before you even attempt to put Boston fans on a higher plane, just remember that fist fights don't break out regularly in the stands in Montreal - can you say the same about Boston? All cities with a passion for sport have their crosses to bear.

Do I need proof that B fans would cheer Subban getting a puck in the face? Do I need proof that a baseball bat to the knee would hurt? Not really - it's not a difficult logical conclusion. I will offer you this though - I believe both sets of fans would be equally concerned if either Chara or Subban suffered a serious injury in the other team's barn. There will always be the neanderthal contingent that will still cheer, but the cheers last night were simply a sense of retribution for the Pacioretty hit last year and quite frankly, so what - it was a minor injury and obviously so from the start.

Habs fans cheer Chara being hit by puck

Canadien fans (and apologists) can point fingers at other fans and do the childish "Ya well he did it first" or "They do it more!". It still doesnt change the fact that these fans cheered a player taking a puck to the face. I dont care who it is thats wrong. You dont have to awwwww or pity the guy but cheering for it is absolutely classless. People really need to stop wishing for and/or applauding bad things happening to people. Thats ANY fans of ANY team NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE PLAYING
