ConklinBy: Adam Gretz

For much of the season the Red Wings backup goalie position appeared to be a major area of weakness, as veteran Ty Conklin struggled when given starts in place of Jimmy Howard, resulting in Howard having to carry almost all of the load in net.

With Howard sidelined due to injury in recent weeks, the Red Wings were forced to bring up Joey MacDonald to fill out the roster, and when given an opporutnity to play, he did everything he could on the ice to convince Detroit management to keep him around when Howard returned. And that's exactly what's going to happen as the Red Wings placed Conklin on waivers on Monday afternoon, which means MacDonald will be sticking around as Howard's new backup.

The 32-year-old veteran, who has played for four teams in his NHL career, has appeared in eight games for the Red Wings this season and allowed just 13 goals on 196 shots for a .934 save percentage. He's been the man between the pipes in each of Detroit's past seven games, six of which they've won, with all of them coming on home ice to extend their NHL record home winning streak to 23 games (and still counting).

Conklin was just never able to find any sort of consistency for Detroit this season and was having one of the worst years of his career, posting a .878 save percentage in his 11 appearances. His last appearance for the Red Wings came on Feb. 4 against the Edmonton Oilers when he was lifted after giving up three goals on nine shots in the first period of what would be a 5-4 shootout loss.

MacDonald came into finish the game, his first appearance with the Red Wings this season. He's played every minute since.

Does anyone have Scott Howson's email address?  I was thinking of sending the link for this article to him, his Jackets could use some talent and experience in net.

For some reason Conks just didn't provide the spark that he did a few years ago. He will get picked up by someone and be okay for someone. Joey deserved the # 2 spot as he outplayed Conks this year. One thing that surprised me that it wasn't mentioned that it appears that Detroit never would have gotten the record with Conklin between the pipes. Good luck Conks!!

Best of luck to Conks, he was great when he was apart of the cup run of 09 when Ozzy struggled.  I really hope he finds a place to play, and if not he will be great in GR.  Plus if he does go to GR, he can mentor guys like Thomas mcCullom and Jordan Pearce about what it takes to be an NHL goalie.  Conks has always been a class act, he just struggled this year in Detroit.  Congrats to Joey for his impressive run and earning the #2 spot for the Wings.

It seemed that everytime Conklin was starting a game this year he would put himself and the team into a huge early hole. Manytimes he would play well the 2nd and 3rd periods, but it was always to late. I wish him well with whatever ends up happening. He was a pretty good back up here in the past, but just didn't quite have it this year.

Welcome aboard Joey, I hope you stay HOT even playing every fourth game.

Saw SOMETHING coming here.  Wasn't sure if it was going to be keeping 3 goalies or what, but clearly Conklin played himself out of the #2 spot and MacDonald played himself into it.

Personally I felt Joey MacDonald did enough last season to have the back up goaltender job. Ty Conklin has been absolutely awful this year, I am surprised he lasted this long. Regardless it will be nice to see Jimmy Howard back between the pipes maybe tomorrow against the Blackhawks or Thursday against the Canucks.

It will be interesting to see if the Red Wings make any kind of a move at the trade deadline.

You said it, Gal, nothing against Conklin, but Joey earned it and won't give the Wings and their fans that sinking feeling whenever he gets a start. Now Jimmy won't have to play 14 in a row.
