Things went so well the first time with Steve Yzerman at the helm, Hockey Canada is going back to the well and the Lightning GM for another go.

Yzerman, who was the man in charge of Canada's gold-medal winning team at the 2010 Olympics Games was bestowed the right to do it again for the 2014 Games. It's up to him (and his large staff) to assemble the team that will compete at the Games in Sochi.

Joining Yzerman on the Hockey Canada contingent will be Blue GM Doug Armstrong, Red Wings GM Ken Holland, Oilers GM Kevin Lowe and then Hockey Canada executives Bob Nicholson and Brad Pascall.

Lowe will be responsible for handling the GM duties for the upcoming World Championships with Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli and Maple Leafs VP David Nonis assisting.

"I am very pleased with the group that we have assembled to lead us through the next two seasons," Nicholson said. "Steve, Doug, Ken and Kevin provide a great deal of experience gained from their involvement in 2010 and their long-time involvement with our program."

The question remains what will the team look like for Yzerman? More to the point, will it include any NHL players? That will be determined with the upcoming round of CBA negotiations because right now it's no guarantee. Don't expect the owners to be happy about it, but it should be a point that will be conceded. The players all enjoy the prospect of playing for their nation at the Olympics.

Either way, it's going to be up to Canada's latest golden boy to repeat the feat and hold the gold.

“I would like to thank Bob Nicholson and Hockey Canada for the opportunity to return to this role of executive director,” said Yzerman. “While winning in Vancouver was something unique and extraordinary, I am as excited about taking on another great challenge. I look forward to working with Doug, Ken, Kevin, Peter and Dave and the Hockey Canada staff to put a plan in place to bring Canada success internationally.”

The contingent that will head USA Hockey has yet to be announced.

Totally missed Perry and Getzlaf. Both would be good options as well, Perry as a pure scorer and Getzlaf can have a similar role to Jordan Staal or Lucic.

Hockey Canada tabs Yzerman to lead for 2014

Two years from now a lot of guys from the 2010 team may not be the best choices. The team is going to be a lot younger. TSN did their predictions on Trade deadline day and the team was full of young talent who will be a lot more experienced once the olympics roll around, and these are some of their and my ideas around what the teams make up could be.

Goalies are easy- Luongo, Fleury and most likely Price or Ward

On D- Keith, Letang, Weber, Doughty are 4 locks, then Pietroangelo, Campbell, Seabrook, Phaneuf and Marc Staal are guys on the bubble.

The Obvious older guys up front are Iginla, my pick for the Captain, Thornton and Crosby, ya he is a vet by now, are clearly needed.
Then young locks- Stamkos, Toews and probably Eric Staal.
Then their are so many young guys who could be in the mix- Hall, Eberle, Seguin, Tavares, Girioux all look like they could be easy picks.
Maybe you want some other older guys St. Louis, Spezza if he is playing like he is right now or even give Heatley and Nash a chance if they are playing well, but it looks like it could be a team of young guns.
Only thing missing is some gritty more defensive guys, so you shouldn't be surprised to see either Jordan Staal, Bergeron or even Lucic on a checking line.
The olympics are a long way off, so who knows right, but to think it will be almost the same as 2010 is naive since hockey has become a speed game and Canada is pouring out young stars almost every year.

The Lines would be:

Iginla-Crosby-Nash
TAMPA LINE
SAN JOSE LINE
Staal-Staal-Toews/Perry/Getslaf

Defense Pairings:

Suter-Weber
Letang-Doughty
Phaneuf-Keith

Green/Staal scratches

Goalies

1. Fleury
2. Luongo
3. Price
If this were 2010 all over again, you may have a good lineup.  The big problem with your line up is that the olympics are in 2014.  (Sorry, the BIGGEST problem with your lineup is that Ryan Suter is American!!!!)  Lots of the kids, as pointed out by other posters, will have established themselves and will make the choices difficult.  I would assume that you could replace SAN JOSE LINE with EDMONTON LINE.

Who else would be better to lead Canada in the 2014 Olympics than "The Captain" aka "Stevie Y." aka Yzerman? After all, he's an all time great hockey player as well as one of the all time greats who've donned "the winged wheel"!CoolCoolCool

Can't believe both of you put Mike Green on your roster.  He didn't make the last team and he's done nothing to imrove his chances.

Lecavalier will not be on the team and I think Marleau is a long shot.  People are forgetting about players like Giroux, Hall, Nugent-Hopkins, Seguin who will have a few more years to develop.  Iginla would be a sentimental choice but I find it hard to believe that he will be making the trip.

Lets start to think about who would make up the team led by CAPTAIN Jarome Iginla.

Goalies:

Starter - Fleury, Price, Luongo

Forwards: Crosby, TAMPA LINE (Stamkos, St. Louis, Lecavlair), Jordan and Eric Staal, SAN JOSE LINE (Marleau, Thornton, Heatley,) Rick Nash,  Perry, Getzlaf and Toews

Defense: Suter, Weber, Letang, Marc Staal, Duncan Keith, Doughty, Phaneuf, Mike Green.

What do you think?
