Sidney Crosby has one again been cleared for contact and could be returning very soon. How soon? Perhaps as soon as Sunday.

"I'll give myself days with contact," Crosby said. "We have two more practices this week. No sooner than Sunday, I would say, but I'm not going to sit here and put a date on it. It would be total guesswork. I just want to make sure I get through these days fine and that would be a great decision to make if I get to that point.

"The big step is contact. Hopefully, I can do that for a few days and get back out there."

If he does make his return on Sunday it will come against the Boston Bruins -- NBC already has it scheduled to be the national game of the week. The interesting angle there, of course, is that it was against the Bruins that Crosby played his last game.

Crosby has been practicing with his Penguins teammates for a while but there were no updates coming from the Penguins about his status until after the team's skate on Tuesday. That's when Crosby revealed he has been cleared.

You'll remember that Crosby played eight games earlier this season after sitting out for nearly a full year because of a concussion. He returned to the sideline later with what many were assuming was another concussion. It was later discovered that Crosby had a neck issue that was causing many of the problems since its symptoms can be very similar to those of a concussion.

If -- and this remains an If until Crosby is able to return for an extended time -- he is healthy, is there any question that the Penguins will be one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup? They already have the second best record in the Eastern Conference with Crosby out for all but eight games thus far.

As he showed earlier this season, it shouldn't take long at all for him to get back into top form -- which makes him in my and plenty of other's opinions the best player in the league.

"I've been through this before. Contact is the big step," Crosby said. "It's nice to be symptom free, but it's not as fulfilling until you get out there. I just want to make sure that I take the right steps here and get back out there soon."

It might not be a great day for the rest of the league per se, but it's a great day for hockey.

I'm not sure about the Pat LaFontaine comparisons.

LaFontaine still managed 15 years in the NHL.

Crosby's had seven so far and missed large portions of three of them with a high ankle sprain and the concussions.

Coincidentally it was a head shot by Pens' Francois Leroux that pretty much ended LaFontaine's career. Given how bad Leroux was at skating LaFontaine can consider himself unfortunate.

Leroux was huge and terrible. He wasn't even a goon, that would have been a step up for his career.

This weekend Boston is going to retire crosby for good. Brumms

And then there's this kind of band wagon jumping tool - even if he is from beanotown - who just has to say something really stupid to get noticed. Well you did get noticed. It's jerks like you that give Boston fans a bad name. And I guarantee comments like these come from someone who has never tied on a pair of skates and played the game. Loved Cam - can't stand most of the rest of you. If I knew your daddy's name, I'd call him and tell him how badly you acted today....and don't let those 10th graders get you upset at school tomorrow. You'll be there in just a couple of years yourself.

Twistedwrister....You saw what you wanted to see.  The Craps can't beat the Pens and it eats at them all the time.  They would do anything to beat Pittsburgh and that includes taking Crosby out with a Cheap Shot.  Steckel threw a shoulder into Crosby's head and face while Crosby was looking toward the other end of the rink.  I wonder how much the bounty was that the late 8 and the Crap organization paid him?  You can say and think what you want but given the bad blood, the circumstances, the opportunity and the mentality of the Crap heads it isn't a stretch to see the obvious intent.  Tampa Bay didn't help matters either but the Steckel hit was the Cheapest and most damaging in my opinion.

I'm with you CMKBASEBALL1. It's looking like the soft tissue injury may have been the cause of a lot of his nagging symtoms. We are cautiously optomistic in the 'Burgh but we'd rather see him hang 'em up than have a life altering injury. Any player who loses their career to a head injury is a travesty but anyone who loses funtionality in their normal life from the same, is a tragedy. Good luck in the playoffs - BUT NOT TOO GOOD! It's quite possible the 1st round will see a Pens/Flyers matchup. It would be a great way to start off the playoffs!

Crosby cleared for contact, could play on Sunday

I like everyone else wonders what is going to happen once he takes a real hard hit during a game. So far each hit that has caused injury has been incidental contact or a minor collision.

As a Flyers fan, I have seen the smallest and least violent bumps/hits end careers of Primeau and severely limit what Gagne has been able to do the last few seasons. Huge Hits taken by Lindros left him unconscious on the ice and never the same.

Sad to see brain injuries happen
