Sidney Crosby has one again been cleared for contact and could be returning very soon. How soon? Perhaps as soon as Sunday.

"I'll give myself days with contact," Crosby said. "We have two more practices this week. No sooner than Sunday, I would say, but I'm not going to sit here and put a date on it. It would be total guesswork. I just want to make sure I get through these days fine and that would be a great decision to make if I get to that point.

"The big step is contact. Hopefully, I can do that for a few days and get back out there."

If he does make his return on Sunday it will come against the Boston Bruins -- NBC already has it scheduled to be the national game of the week. The interesting angle there, of course, is that it was against the Bruins that Crosby played his last game.

Crosby has been practicing with his Penguins teammates for a while but there were no updates coming from the Penguins about his status until after the team's skate on Tuesday. That's when Crosby revealed he has been cleared.

You'll remember that Crosby played eight games earlier this season after sitting out for nearly a full year because of a concussion. He returned to the sideline later with what many were assuming was another concussion. It was later discovered that Crosby had a neck issue that was causing many of the problems since its symptoms can be very similar to those of a concussion.

If -- and this remains an If until Crosby is able to return for an extended time -- he is healthy, is there any question that the Penguins will be one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup? They already have the second best record in the Eastern Conference with Crosby out for all but eight games thus far.

As he showed earlier this season, it shouldn't take long at all for him to get back into top form -- which makes him in my and plenty of other's opinions the best player in the league.

"I've been through this before. Contact is the big step," Crosby said. "It's nice to be symptom free, but it's not as fulfilling until you get out there. I just want to make sure that I take the right steps here and get back out there soon."

It might not be a great day for the rest of the league per se, but it's a great day for hockey.

Cant get too excited about this. Not after he was shelved 8 games back last time.

Wishful thinking would be he wasnt that nicked in December and they decided to really take it cautious with him, but who knows. From all the reports that get leaked its seems like the Pens and the docs have botched this recovery from Day 1.  You would think this time around they would have a solid plan for him to comeback.

Well first of all the second time he was shelved wasn't because of a concussion....and I love how all you experts know the future. It was a fluke concussion which in my mind will always be considered a cheapshot by Steckel

I am also amazed that he is able to play, from what I was led to understand he was nearly on life support from brain trauma or vaginal issues depending on which online expert was opining.

I noticed a majority of Flyer fans stopped saying that about him after Pronger went down....

Anyway great news for sure. Apparently right now he is at the same risk as anyone.

I am not a Crosby fan, but he is one hell of a hockey player.  However, a couple of more hits and/or concussions could ruin his life, not just his hockey career.  I sure hope someone has talked to him about that.

Totally agree with you Pens_StanleyCup.
I have had lots of concussions and I am no pro athlete who is going to get knocked around like he will. They should really try to ease him in, they are already in a playoff spot and Malkin is playing so well that they don't need Crosby until the playoffs. The next 12-15 years of his career are a lot more important than the Pens seeding for the post season.

Lets not get too far ahead of ourselves, give him time to get nudged a few times in practice, and see how he does.  I want him back for the playoffs, but would rather have him back for next year.  Either way - good news.

How long before he's back on the shelf?  I'm not wishing bad for Crosby as I think he's a magnificent player, but this is Pro Hockey.  The way he plays his game, he's bound to get clobbered from time to time.

Unless there are special rules applying to him.  I hope not though... for the integrity of the game.

What? What? WHAT?

This is amazing.

Apparently, according to all the doctors on CBS, Crosby was "done".

My faith in the medical knowledge of these boards has just taken a major hit.

Let's hope Sid can take one and not get injured.
