Take a good long look at the top 10 teams in the Associated Press preseason poll released today because based on the past decade, chances are at least one will not finish the season ranked in the Top 25. Who do you think that team will be?

The AP preseason top 10:

1. Oklahoma
2. Alabama
3. Oregon
4. LSU
5. Boise State
6. Florida State
7. Stanford
8. Texas A&M
9. Oklahoma State
10. Nebraska

In the past 10 years, nine teams ranked in the preseason Top 10 finished the season out of the Top 25 in the final poll.

Since 2001, Tennessee has been the biggest preseason bust. The Volunteers were ranked No. 3 in the 2005 preseason poll, but finished 5-6 and unranked.

The Volunteers also have the distinction of being the only school in the last 10 years that finished the season not in the final rankings twice after being ranked among the top 10 preseason teams.

In 2002, Tennessee was No. 5 in the preseason poll, but an 8-5 record left the Volunteers out of the Top 25. Last season, Texas also was No. 5 in the preseason poll, but finished 5-7.

In the last 10 years 26 percent of the teams – or 6.5 teams per year – that were ranked in the Top 25 preseason poll were not ranked in the final AP poll. Last year, nine teams ranked in the Top 25 preseason poll were nowhere to be found when the final poll was released led by preseason No. 5 Texas.

Here’s a look at the biggest busts based on the AP preseason poll since 2001:

Year-PreRank School (final record)

2005–No. 3 Tennessee (finished 5-6)
2010–No. 5 Texas (finished 5-7)
2002–No. 5 Tennessee (finished 8-5)
2008–No. 9 Clemson (finished 7-6)
2002–No. 9 Washington (finished 7-6)
2003–No. 9 Virginia Tech (finished 8-5)
2008–No. 10 Auburn (finished 5-7)
2007–No. 10 Louisville (finished 6-6)
2002–No. 10 Nebraska (finished 7-7)
2001–No. 11 Oregon State (finished 5-6)
2006–No. 11 Florida State (finished 7-6)
2004–No. 12 Kansas State (finished 4-7)
2009–No. 12 Cal (finished 8-5)

Biggest AP preseason poll busts since 2001

I think Texas A&M will be the bust this year for a couple of reasons. One- they will have a bullseye on their back for trying to stick it to the rest of the conference. Two- I think its a distraction for the players and three I think they got on a roll last year but it wont happen again this year (See reasons one and two above). I dont think they are a top 10 team plain and simple.

Hrmm you can't trust any team from the ACC to finish above 8-4, yet VT has a seven year streak of 10 win seasons.  I guess you didn't know they were in the ACC.  An otherwise excellent analysis for a WVU grad.  Keep trying with that math thing.

The way I see it the LSU-Oregon loser will be on slippery footing early.  FSU because you can't trust any team from the ACC to finish above 8-4.  Texas A&M will have a giant bulls-eye on their back every week since they courted the SEC. And finally OSU will have to recover from the departure of Dana Holgersen and his high powered offense.

I voted for Kim Kardashian until I put on my glasses and read busts instead of butts. Last week I signed up for a parachute club, put on my glasses when I got home and found out it was a prostitute club. I'm now committed to 5 jumps a month. Getting old is hell.

I figure FSU or ATM will be the busts this year.  ATM because of all this realignment and wanting to leave the B12 distraction and FSU for 2 reasons 1) I was never sold on EJ Manuel, 2) The coach's son's health situation will be a distraction.

This is why pre-season rankings are not necessary.  Just start the rankings in week 3 and go from there.
Yes, you are right, they are not necessary ............ but so much fun. To see a favorite team and/or a rival in the preseason top 25 helps get the juices flowing. It is the annual doorway into the fall season. We understand the insignifcance of the rankings but don't take away our "jump start" to college football. Besides, even 3rd week rankings may not prove to be that foretelling of a finished outcome either. One or two key injuries and the bubble may burst for any talented team.

I say thank you to all the preseason pollsters. Let the bragging rights begin!
