With the uncertainty of the future of the Big East, it's no secret several schools are seeking conference membership elsewhere. West Virginia, however, appears like it will remain in the league as Big East sources told that the Mountaineers will not be accepted into either the Atlantic Coast Conference or Southeastern Conference.

WVU had enquired with both leagues, but WVU officials told representatives of the Big East those overtures had been denied and they were remaining in the Big East.

West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck released a statement on Sunday concerning conference realignment and ironically did not mention the Big East once in his statement.

"There is no question that the landscape of college athletics is once again changing," Luck said. "West Virginia University has great tradition as the state's flagship land-grant institution and we will continue working to do what's best for our University and its athletic teams. No matter how the college athletic landscape changes, there is no doubt WVU is and will remain a national player."

After Saturday’s news that Pittsburgh and Syracuse were headed to the ACC, there have been various reports that UConn and Rutgers are likely candidates to join the ACC

Both schools have released statements about conference realignment, leaving open the possibility either or both would leave the Big East if extended an invitation to the ACC.

Also, Monday Big East commissioner John Marinatto told the New York Times that he expects to make Pitt and Syracuse honor the Big East’s withdrawal agreement - $5 million and 27 months notice. If true, that means the Panthers and Orange could not join the ACC until July 2014.

Really?  Wow!!  I never would have considered that.  So the administrators of other conferences read the CBS postings by WVU fans, and decided they were stupid posts, so they rejected accepting them into their conferences.  Who woulda thunk it.  If I had known that, I would have told all WVU fans not to make what you consider to be stupid posts, and then maybe they would have accepted WVU. If only we'd known !!!!!

Im confused.  Why is everybody trashing the SEC academics?  Most of the SEC schools are the biggest schools in the state and whose objective is to give quality higher education to its citizens.  Quit acting like your ACC, Pac10, Big Ten schools are Ivy League.  Just because your conferences are jokes at sports you have to justify it as, "oh were more of an academic school."  Laughable.

SEC - 7 BCS Titles
Big 12 - 2
ACC - 1
Big East - 1
Big Ten - 1
Pac10 - 0

I dont even see Ivy league people making fun of SEC academics.  Why?  Because their not tainted with jealousy of a conferences Football status.  Why are you posting on a sports board and not in some academic journals if you're so smart.  As far as WVU goes, the SEC isnt trying to take teams that are still in conferences.  A&M left their conference before the SEC accepted their bid.  They even had a vote saying they werent going to invite teams in conferences.  A&M left and sent their bid.

So keep whining about the SEC, they cheat, they are dumb, and acting like elitists.  But we all have something in common with you whiners.  We all didnt graduate from an Ivy league school.

So if some of you don't believe the report that West Virginia was denied, why do you believe a report from somebody saying that was false?  Where there's smoke there's fire, and I think it's somewhere in the middle.  In my opinion, West Virginia was probably told they'd be well advised not to spend time applying to those conferences because the SEC and ACC have other plans.

So Pac10er1:

Logical Thinker and andyh80, I think you are misreading these posts if from them you get "WVU is known and respected." Known, yes, but it appears not for the right reasons. Respected? Do these comments sound respectful? These comments by you, and the statements like "It's a lie! The WVU administration says so!" are why so many people on this board are ripping into you.  Get your head out of the sand -- you aren't wanted by these two conferences, so suck it up and move on. I don't have a dog in this hunt, but in just 24 hours I've formed a very bad opionion  of WVU fans. No wonder the other conferences don't want you. It seems that a lot of the negative stuff I'm reading may be true.
Because I state our administration has said this particular report is an "outright lie," you form a bad opinion of WVU fans?  Because some blogger named McMurphy has (unidentified sources) that nobody else has, we are just going to "assume" it's fact?  Who's head is in the sand again?  CBS also stated that Mizzou was invited by the SEC (from sources not stated, a booster of all people allegedly), which the SEC said is a lie as well.  So two reports from CBS yesterday have been completely shut down as a lie and speculation.  Great reporting CBS.  Even better, you gave people a forum to spew their uneducated rhetoric against the great State of West Virginia.

Just throwing this out there...... but West Virginia was formed because it was a part of Virginia that chose not to secede from the union.  Did this play a part in the SEC saying not to them?
