TCU to join Big 12 in 2012-13

TCU will accept an invitation to join the Big 12 Conference for the 2012-13 school year, college football industry sources told CBSSports.com.

Multiple TCU sources told CBSSports.com "it's a done deal."

TCU was scheduled to join the Big East on July 1, 2012, but instead will join the Big 12. By leaving the Big East before it officially became a member, the Horned Frogs will have to pay a $5 million exit fee but is not bound by the Big East’s 27-month requirement for notification.

TCU chancellor Victor J. Boschini told the Big East Thursday morning that the school has scheduled a board of regents meeting for later in the day.

The addition of TCU to the Big 12 replaces Texas A&M, which is headed to the SEC.

"We’re proud that TCU has been invited to join the Big 12," Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds said in a statement. "Their commitment to academics and success on the field make them an excellent fit. With a solid budget and strong financial support, they have been proactive at improving facilities. Their close proximity to all conference institutions makes for a comfortable travel situation."

The Big 12 still must determine if it wants 10 or 12 members. Tuesday, Missouri gave chancellor Brady Deaton the authority to pursue its options about joining another conference.

Sources told CBSSports.com that if Missouri stays in the Big 12, the league likely would stay at 10 schools, including TCU. However, if Missouri leaves for the SEC -- and the Birmingham News reported Missouri currently does not have unanimous support -- the Big 12 likely would add three more schools to get to 12. The leading candidates would be Louisville, BYU, West Virginia, Cincinnati and Tulane.

The loss of TCU is another blow to the Big East. The league also lost Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the ACC, but commissioner John Marinatto has said previously the Big East would make Pitt and Syracuse honor the 27-month exit agreement, meaning they couldn't join the ACC until 2014.

Without TCU, Pittsburgh and Syracuse, the remaining Big East football members are Louisville, West Virginia, Cincinnati, UConn, Rutgers and South Florida.

I agree. At the least, the Big East needs to KEEP WVU and Cincinnati (since the Big 12 is eyeing them as well as Louisville) as well as bring im UCF, ECU, Memphis (who has been wanting to come to a BCS conference for a LONG time) and FIU (who is a sleeping giant on the rise in the Sun Belt)

It sure makes a lot more sense for TCU. Good for them. Now if we here in Boise could get into a decent conference that would allow our talent to truly shine, that would be a miracle. The Mountain West could have been a great conference before everyone abandoned ship. Maybe that's why Bleymaier was asked to go. We got to the party as everyone was leaving...

There is still a strong possibility that Texas, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State leave the Big 12 sooner or later.  If Missouri isn't accepted by the SEC, then TCU joining the Big 12 increases the possibility of something like a Big 8 surviving with MU, KU, K-State, Iowa State, TCU, Baylor, Texas Tech and someone else (e.g. SMU).  It's nothing like the existing Big 12, but it may be the best that can be salvaged.

Perfect scenario would be Mizzou taking a hike and Louisville, West Virginia, and BYU coming in.

Good choice for both Big12 and TCU.

It is now time to Drop the BigEast's Auto BCS (when the contract is up).

Its time for the Mountain West To Make a push for their BCS ticket.

Being a Boise State fan I hate to see TCU go but the Mountain West screwed them.

souperman nailed it right on the head.  The Big East is going to be a power conference for basketball and Olympic sports -- NOT football.  If you're a school in the Big East wanting to be a football power (and those other sports, too) you need to change conferences.

Where I disagree is that there will be FOUR only, not five, conferences in the Elite 64 with 16 teams each.  That is, the best 64 college football programs are going to separate themselves from the NCAA and other colleges.

I suspect the NCAA, to avoid it's own suicide, will let them and will bend to rules in football (and maybe other sports) for these schools to allow them to remain attached (letting basketball programs play eachother non-conference, and inviting the 64 to to the Dance each spring).  With all the violations going on, clearly the move must be made to loosening the silliness and inconsistency of amatuer athletics, and to sharing the loot with these semi-pro institutions.

Teams headed to Big 12 (Big 16) will include:
  • Boise State -- growing school, growing market, quirky/intersting football persona, media darling
  • BYU -- along with Texas and ND, concessions will be made to their independent media contracts and capabilities, and to no Sunday games, then this one is done deal...  BYU wants to be a major player
  • Notre Dame -- cannot (won't, read the history) join the Big Ten; need to be in 64; need to keep their media empire
  • Air Force -- they like football; not headed to the Big East; western school; rivalry with BYU missed; media footprint in Colorado
  • TCU -- once the Big East started to unravel this one a no-brainer; why pay 5 million (breach of contract on the Big East not being what they said they'd be)
That includes two sound basketball programs that can compete immediately in the Big 12 (Notre Dame and BYU).  Air Force is always disciplined.  For Boise State basketball is next...  Big 12 membership will help that.  For tradition and venue, I'd go after New Mexico who gets better in basketball as a Big 12 team and probably improves in football as well.

I suggest that the Big XII hire Arthur Rhodes as it's commisioner that way if any school tries to leave the conference he can smack them around with his BBC.

So with TCU being invited, I would expect BYU to follow closely behind.  They have a national following, currently independent and have a fairly good rivalry with TCU already.  Everything I've read points that all schools involved would love BYU in the conference, whether or not BYU choosed to join the conference is a whole other story.

andyh80.......needs to get his WVU Mountainears to keep the BE together by inviting ECU, UCF, Memphis, Marshall, Southern Miss, Houston to come in to the BE immediately. Mountainear fans do not want to play football and baskerball in the MAC.

Well, it's a victory for geography, if nothing else.

Bye, Big East.
