WVU headed to Big 12 if Missouri leaves

Shortly after Missouri officially announces it is withdrawing from the Big 12, West Virginia will be extended an invitation to join the Big 12, college football industry sources told

The Mountaineers invitation to the Big 12 is contingent on Missouri leaving for the SEC. Once Missouri notifies the Big 12 it is leaving, the Mountaineers' official invitation could come within "24-48 hours," a source said.

The Mountaineers would be the latest to leave the Big East Conference. Pittsburgh and Syracuse announced they are leaving for the ACC and TCU will join the Big 12 next season.

If West Virginia informs the Big East of its intention to leave before the league adds Navy or Air Force, the Mountaineers would only be held to a $5 million exit fee. If the Big East has added Navy or Air Force before the Mountaineers notify the Big East, they would have to pay $10 million. Either way, the Mountaineers would not be able to leave the Big East until June 30, 2014 – the same time frame as Syracuse and Pittsburgh.

Without West Virginia, Pitt, Syracuse and TCU, the remaining football league members are UConn, Rutgers, USF, Louisville and Cincinnati.

Two days ago in Washington D.C., Big East commissioner John Marinatto met with officials from Boise State, Houston, SMU, UCF and Navy, but no official invitations were extended. Air Force did not attend the meeting. Representatives from other Big East schools also attended.

The Big East hopes to add those schools – along with Air Force – to get to a 12-team football league. Even if the Big East adds those schools, without West Virginia, they still would need another school.

The Western contingent of the Big East's possible future members - Boise State, Air Force, Houston and SMU - are pushing for the Big East to pursue BYU. It's unknown if the Cougars, who had talks with the Big 12, would be interested in joining a 12-team Big East.

If the Big East could land BYU - along with the other six new schools - it would have two divisions: West - BYU, Air Force, Houston, SMU, Boise State and Louisville and East - UConn, Rutgers, USF, Cincinnati, Navy and UCF that Big East officials are confident would be worthy of retaining its BCS automatic qualifying status.

Besides BYU, other possible candidates for the Big East's 12th member would be Temple or East Carolina.

On Tuesday afternoon, Big East spokesman John Paquette told that a Las Vegas Journal report that Marinatto would meet with Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky and Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson Wednesday in New York about a merger between the leagues was inaccurate.

WVU headed to Big 12 if Missouri leaves

The Pac 12 and SEC have already turned down the Big 12 schools once.  The Big 12 now has the opportunity to expand back to 12 teas, where they really belong.  They can add West virginia, louisville, and Cincinnati.  Those three plus the two zkansas Schools and Iowa State would make up the North.  The South would remain the same with TCu subbing in for A&M.  This would put the Big East out of it's misery, as far as football is concerned.  The Big 12 would continue to have problems operating as a 10 team conference and no Conference Championship Game.  With 12 teams, they join the Big 10 and Pac 12.  There would be 5 BCS Conferences for 5 BCS Bowl Games.  What else can you ask for?

WVU headed to Big 12 if Missouri leaves

CaptainRice - it depends what part of town you're in.  I've seen a lot of Mizzou fans in the city and heading east (Lee's Summit, Blue Springs, Independence).  Obviously, there are a ton of kU fans and that number increases exponentially heading west.

WVU headed to Big 12 if Missouri leaves

Uh, excuse me...with the loss of Missouri the league is not dying, just taking a breather and exploring future options.  I just hope Missouri does leave and after the dust settles, they will be no better off!  I see the Big 12 adding teams that will make it stronger, why not go to 14 or 16 teams, go after some independents.

WVU headed to Big 12 if Missouri leaves

I feel bad for WVU. They got screwed in this realignment. They had to go to the Big12 because they were rejected by the SEC and the ACC. Now they are playing in the MidWest which is going to hurt recruiting big time. Not only that the Big 12 is still unstable itself. What if Texas or Oklahoma leave? They may end up merging with the Big East. Boise State and BYU seem like they should've been in the Big12 and WVU to whoever expands in the East next.

WVU headed to Big 12 if Missouri leaves

I'm not convinced that the Big 12, though a great conference, is the best fit for WVU; based on all the reasons previously mentioned in other posts. But this team is fairly desperate to find a safe spot to land. The chaos created by Swofford, Pitt, Syracuse, et al, is a negative distraction for the players and the program. It's one of those things that hangs over the team every day. Just a little difficult to get that swagger back after being attacked by a predator conference in the third week of the season. Recruiting as a geographical outsider is also an x factor.

WVU already plays the little sisters of the blind out of conference
I bet you the LSU and Auburn fans may take offense to that statement...

WVU headed to Big 12 if Missouri leaves

Canesguy, I have heard several such stories out of Morgantown.  Truthfully, I've been to lots of WVU games, and have never seen opposing fans treated badly.  Probably the worst I've seen is people tossing stuff on the field after some horrendous missed calls when Cincinnati was in town.  The fans went a little crazy after an eye gouging incident was missed by officials, and after a DT stomped on Pat White's legs when he was in a pile-up.  A couple people wadded up trash (popcorn boxes) and tossed it at Cincy's bench.  Not that this type of behavior is excusable.

I've seen OSU players & fans get pelted with frozen marshmallow with pennies in them by Wisconsin fans.  Ususally serenaded by taunts like "Whats a matta?  You can't even take a marshmallow?"  followed by the ubiquitous "F___ the Buckeyes!!".  Ive seen youtube videos of Penn St fans pelting an OSU fan with half full cans of beer.  The bottom line is unseemly behavior goes on at a lot of places, and the majority of fans think it is inexcusable.
