WVU, Big East differ on departure date

Will West Virginia stay or will they go? More specifically, when will they go?

Actually, the Mountaineers are gone – they’re leaving the Big East for the Big 12. But there seems to be a, well, slight difference of opinion when West Virginia actually will join the Big 12.

The Big East has a 27-month notification period to leave – the league has said multiple times Pittsburgh and Syracuse can’t leave for the ACC until June 1, 2014 – but the Big 12 and West Virginia indicate they’ll join forces next year.

Following CBSSports.com’s report, the Big East and Big 12 released statements this morning within a few minutes of each other.

The Big 12’s version:

“The Big 12 Conference Board of Directors have voted unanimously to accept West Virginia University as a full conference member effective July 1, 2012.  The Mountaineers will begin competing in the Big 12 beginning with the 2012-13 athletic season.”

The Big East’s version from Commissioner John Marinatto:

“This move by West Virginia does not come as a surprise. League officials, members of our conference and the candidate schools to whom we have been talking were aware of this possibility. We have taken West Virginia’s possible departure into account as we have moved forward with our own realignment plans. West Virginia is fully aware that the Big East Conference is committed to enforcing the 27-month notification period for members who choose to leave the conference. We are confident that in the coming weeks we will complete our own realignment program, adding a number of high-quality members to remain among the top conferences in both football and basketball.”

So the Big 12 and West Virginia say West Virginia is joining the Big 12 next season, while the Big East says it “is committed to enforcing the 27-month notification period.”

Multiple Big East sources have said they have no indication that the league would change its 27-month notification rule. Marinatto has said previously he was prepared to have a 14-team football league, including Pitt and Syracuse along with its new members, in 2012 and/or 2013. If West Virginia doesn't leave next season, it conceivably could be a 15-team football league in 2012/2013.

This, my friends, could get interesting.

WVU, Big East differ on departure date

I just hope Syracuse and Pitt aren't forced to travel to Houston or SMU during basketball season (or any other season other than football). If I were Syracuse and Pitt, I would refuse to go. You can say "the rules" but if they are going to add far away dead weight schools aren't the Big East changing the rules too?

WV can leave when they want. The Big East can sue them, but I doubt they get much more then they would have negotiated with WV to exit early. So in my opinion it is all just a bunch of hot air.

"We are confident that in the coming weeks we will complete our own realignment program, adding a number of high-quality members to REMAIN AMONG THE TOP CONFERENCES IN BOTH FOOTBALL and basketball."

Really did he just say remain among the top conferences in football? Is he joking?I mean i know they at the top in basketball but they are no where near the top in football and it is going to get worse after W.Virginia,Pitt and Cuse leaves. What a joke making schools stay till 2014.Just let them leave and bring in Air Force and Navy and UCF so you can "REMAIN AMONG THE TOP CONFERENCES IN FOOTBALL"

WVU, Big East differ on departure date

Will lawsuits from teams like Cincy and UConn derail or delay WVU moving to the BigXII like they almost did for TAMU to SEC?

27 months is a strange time ... If I am counting right, it basically Feb 1, 2014.  Can't imagine changing in the middle of the Basketball season.  If they have to wait 27 months, it probably becomes more like 32 months and July 1, 2014.

Have we heard anything about an early exit for Cuse and Pitt.  I don't see the BigEast granting WVU anything early without also making that offer to Cuse and Pitt.

WVU, Big East differ on departure date

I'm a Marshall fan and a resident of WV. I am happy for WVU that they never got left behind in this whole mess. They are too good of a program to be left out. PERIOD! What gets my goat is that the Big East wants to hold them back along with Pitt and Syracuse while they plan on raping CUSA again and take those schools immediately. I hope all three of those schools get out and don't have to play the traitors that are bailing on CUSA and the Mountain West. Personally I wouldn't schedule any of those schools that switch leagues if I was from CUSA or MW. Let them see how quick they become irrelavant on the college football scene. The schools leaving CUSA and the MW should realize that they are already all together and don't need to go to the Big East. If they would stick together and stay......the Big East would be forced to join as well. Of course they could go rape the sunbelt and MAC. LMAO! They are pretty desperate right now. I just wish the schools planning on joining the Big East would realize they have the power without going anywhere!! Stay where you are.....the Big East is a joke!!! Louisville is the power there now???? Really??? My beloved Herd beat them this year and we are middle of the pack CUSA.......Seriously?? Wake up guys!! Stay in CUSA and the MW.....you have the power to have the Big East begging you instead of them looking down there noses at you like they did when they didn't need you!!! Idiots!

WVU, Big East differ on departure date

Just let Pitt, Syracuse, and WVU go. They don't want to be in the Big East and it would be an embarassment to have lame duck members. Move on with your own expansion plans and don't hold these schools hostage.

WVU, Big East differ on departure date

Basically what is happening is Big East is going to want more than 5 Million to leave early. They will settle for something like 10 Million and WV will be playing in Big 12 Next Year. this is all Legal BS.

WVU, Big East differ on departure date

Fear is a powerful emotion! On one side you see your conference eroding in quality charter members of the Southwest & Big 8 conferences, leaving and you "fear" the loss in reverence, competition & TV market. On the other side, you see your present conference too is eroding and there is a "fear" you will be stuck in a conference of less football reverence (more like a basketball conference), competition & TV market. You wonder what benefits each side will recieve in this arrangement and the answer just might be "none" because it was the result of "fear".
