BYU, San Diego State possibilities for Big East

Brigham Young is in discussions with the Big East about joining the league, while sources told that San Diego State also is seeking membership in the Big East.

BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall told reporters Monday that BYU had been “approached” by the Big East.

On Oct. 25, reported that the Western contingent of possible future Big East members was making a push to add BYU

“There is a push,” Mendenhall said Monday. “And there are conversations that are in place for the Big East to convince or to have BYU join that conference. I trust our athletic director (Tom Holmoe) and President (Cecil) Samuelson to deal with all that.”

With the upcoming departures of TCU and West Virginia to the Big 12 and Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the ACC, the Big East will need seven schools to get to a 12-member football league by 2014.

Last week, reported that the Big East's presidents and chancellors gave Commissioner John Marinatto authorization to extend invitations to Boise State, UCF, Houston, SMU, Navy and Air Force. Boise State, UCF, Houston and SMU will join the league together as a group, sources told, once Boise State finds a conference home for its Olympic sports.

Sources told that all six schools are committed to joining the Big East. However, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported that Air Force remains undecided. If Air Force stays in the Mountain West, the Big East would need two schools – presumably BYU and another school.

That’s where San Diego State comes into play. The Aztecs weren’t shy about their interest in joining the Big 12 and now have turned their attention to the Big East.

Despite the obvious geography and travel concerns, the biggest reason for San Diego State’s interest in the Big East is to be a part of an automatic qualifying BCS league. The Big East is guaranteed its BCS status through the 2013 season with a new BCS cycle beginning in 2014.

“Certainly there are a lot of questions on our part, but with the landscape changing the main benefit that I could see on a short term scale would be inclusion into the BCS system,” Mendenhall said about BYU. “That’s up in two years. Again whether the Big East is able hold that spot with the new teams coming in? My guess would be yes.”

San Diego State feels the same way. Despite the great distance to the Eastern league members (Cincinnati, UConn, South Florida, Navy, Rutgers, UCF), San Diego State would prefer an all-sports membership – or at least in football and men’s basketball – sources said. They also would be receptive to a football-only membership and could be in a Western division featuring Boise State, Houston, SMU, BYU and Louisville.

San Diego State leads the Mountain West in football attendance this season (38,802) and since 2010, the Aztecs have won a combined 48 games in football and men's basketball, the nation’s highest total.  San Diego State men's basketball team also has won 20 or more games and advanced to postseason play in six consecutive seasons, including back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances.

San Diego State athletic director Jim Sterk declined comment to, but recently told the San Diego Union-Tribune: “The best-scenario is that we’re in a league with an automatic qualifier, an enhanced television package and we’re generating revenues to run all our programs. That’s the No. 1 goal, whether that’s with the Mountain West, Big East, or Big 12.”

Last week, Boise State president Bob Kustra received authorization from the state of Idaho’s Board of Education to join the Big East as a football-only member. The Broncos still must find a conference home for their Olympic sports before making the move.

Kustra told the board that Boise State has made it “very clear” to the Big East “we would go in with a western partner.”

That could be Air Force, BYU or San Diego State – or two of those three schools.

Mendenhall said he did not know how quickly BYU would make a decision about the Big East. The Cougars are playing in their first season as a football independent after leaving the Mountain West Conference.

BYU, San Diego State possibilities for Big East

San Diego St. in the Big East sounds as nutty as a 12-team conference called the "Big 10".

The Big Ten has 12 teams. The Big 12 has ten teams.  The Big East includes the West.  Coaches are cheating.  School administrators are lying.  Mr. Emmert, college sports needs some leadership!

Epic disaster in the Big East. No other words to describe it. Marinatto is making Dan Beebe look like he was a genius at this point. It's one thing to chase off schools but at least the Big 12 recovered. The Big East is heading toward the toilet and its spat with WVU is a classic example. Rather than negotiate a buyout (HEY DUMBY--MORE MONEY FOR THE CONFERENCE!!!) West Virginia is suing its way out. Syracuse and Pitt agreed to wait but they might not have to at this rate. You would have to be desperate to jump on this Titanic. Boise State should stick to the Mountain West which will at least be around in all sports. The Big East will dissolve in football.

I am predicting Notre Dame running off with Providence, Seton Hall, St. John's, DePaul, Marquette, Villanova and Georgetown to form their own league leaving the other schools behind. UConn and Rutgers go to the ACC and USF can go to Conference USA.

Marinatto is FAR worse than Beebe. Beebe had ideas but couldn't get anyone to agree to them until the S#@! was about to hit the fan and then he had to take all the blame. Marinatto was frozen with STUPIDITY and I wish him ALL the worse. I hope once this deal is done that he is forced out as commissioner. He ruined the best BB conference through his ineptnes and naive thinking that you must be courteous and forthcoming when dealing with others. That is exactly why Swofford gave it to him with NO VASELINE. This idiot actually called a meeting with the Big XII to ask how they could work together..LOL...then the Big XII takes WVU. I bet his kids tell him to "go to hell" if he asks to see their homework. I would never respect this guy as a leader. He looks like the BOSS on the DILBERT comics.

What a joke of a conference, if they go for SDSU, might as well go ahead and add Hawai'i or the maybe Hong Kong or Taipei!

The Big East is more of a joke than the middle east.

Yep. "Big EAST". The conference that lies about its name, and tries to take teams from the west coast and bring them into the conference.

I say the Big East go ahead and add Oxford, Cambridge, and the University of Shanghai.  In fact, for sh*** and giggles, go ahead and add Tehran University and the University of North Korea to the conference.  It could be called the International + Evil Empire Division.  Are you kidding me?  This conference is a JOKE, that is J-O-K-E.  Now that I think about it, go ahead and add my high school, Columbus East in Ohio.  The Big East ought to just disband now before this gets even more embarrassing.  So for the sake of survival, they are creating a "western" division and make both east coast and west coast 'college' kids travel back and forth across the face of the continent for football and basketball, not to mention all the stupid sports.  See this is why the NCAA will NOT exist in its current state by the year 2020.  Its become complete madness and it and these conferences have become terrorist organizations with these poor student athletes being held hostage.

Correct the new BigEast is adding most of the best members of cusa and mwc without the bottom teams that drag those conferences down
