With BYU officially out of the picture for the Big East, the league has begun negotiations with San Diego State about the Aztecs joining the league as a football-only member, college football industry sources told CBSSports.com Saturday night.

On Tuesday, CBSSports.com first reported that the Big East would target San Diego State after the league had decided to “move on” and no longer pursue BYU.

The San Diego Tribune first reported Saturday night negotiations had begun between the Big East and San Diego State.

The Big East is talking with the Aztecs because Boise State wants a guarantee of a “Western partner” before joining the league. The Broncos, along with Houston, SMU, UCF and Navy, are all ready to join the Big East, but Boise State is waiting for the Big East to secure a Western partner and Houston, SMU and UCF are waiting to join with Boise State.

Navy has told Boise State, SMU, Houston and UCF it definitely will join, sources said, but are waiting on those schools as well.

Air Force, which remains a football-only target of the Big East, remains undecided.

San Diego State, Boise State and Navy would join as football only members, while SMU, Houston and UCF would be all-sports members. San Diego State and Boise State could place its Olympic sports in the Big West.

None of the new Big East schools would join the league until the 2013 school year, sources told CBSSports.com.

Big East, San Diego State begin discussions

It more then "tv markets" my friend it's also about talent pools and recruiting. San Dieigo, and more speficially Southeast San Diego, has 4 Heisman winners and plenty of great NCAA players and NFL players. And really lets be serious how many "just as good" TV markets are out there? If you can give me 3 that are not already commited to a major ceonference I would be surprised.

I like and hate this at the same time. I like it because SDSU will finally get into a BCS conference and get some of that BCS money which will turn this into a top teir program in 5 years. I hate it because I am a pruist at heart and think its horrible to have a team this far out west in the Big East. I do like conferences to stick geographically. Would much rather se them in the PAC whatever, which brings me to another point. I think in the end the Pac-12 are gonna come out on top when this is said and done. As we sit SDSU football would be a bottom teir team in the PAC-12+ but their basketball program would compete for the conference. So I see it as them(PAC-12+) letting SDSU and possiblly Bosie build up their football programs at the expense of a despreate Big East and then when the expand to 14-16 teams they will swoop in and add SDSU and possiblly Bosie and other teams.

I mean now that SDSU might have BCS money and AQ who wouldnt want to come to SDSU. Really San Diego or Knoxvillie......San Diego or Gainsville.......San Diego or Ann Arbhor

Florida to the Pacific 10?
Minnesota to the Southeastern Conference?
Pittsburgh to Mountain West?

Seriously, this is all beyond crazy.

Boise St. needs to think about whats best for them and quit worrying about a western partner. Hey Boise fans, you didn't see WVU wanting the Big 12 to take another eastern partner before they join. A lot of WVU fans and Big 12 fans would like to see them add Louisville at some point. But we sure in hell didn't wait for a eastern team. No matter what some of you MWC fans think, moving to the new Big East would bring at least 3 to 4 Times the revenue that Boise is getting now. And better exposure of thrie games. And with the schools that are joining the Big East will be a hell of a lot stronger than the MWC & C-USA merge. So with that said, the Big East should not even consider San Diego St. there are Schools left that would join, that has just as good of a TV market, and would open up new recruiting grounds.

With no disrespect to anyone in the BIG EAST; but this conference has enormous problems as long as it lets NOTRE DAME play in BIG EAST bowl slots, and not be a BE football member.  I just think the BE is grabbing for "straws" right now, when they have the opportunity to get other eastern programs, ie. ECU, TEMPLE, Memphis etc.  Forget about Boise St. and SDSU. Get Houston, SMU, UCF,
ECU, TEMPLE and Memphis; these schools would be a much better solution !!!

mwl1234.....I agree with your assessment of equally qualified teams in the East.  But, Boise St. wants a Western football partner.  So, the Big East is NOT losing it's mind.  The Big East is simply losing long time members and desperately looking for replacements, and allowing some of those replacements to dictate which possible replacements will be invited.

The Big East must be desperate. There are plenty of teams as good as San Diego State on the "East" half of the United States.

San Diego St previously informed the Big Least that they are interested only if men's basketball was included with football.  This should be interesting, although they are not a good geographical partner to Boise St due to distance.  Don't expect AF to join.  The AD is for it but most everyone else (especially the fans) in Colo Springs associated with it hates the idea.

Maybe the Big Least, "where more is less" can get London and Barcelona as soccer only members?

You've laid out a very competitive league there... All this conference moving is killing traditional rivilries (sp) all for the sake of the all mighty dollar and the networks... sad really when you think about.... conferences should be regional... build some traditions and go from there.... bring back the big 8 Sealed
