Boise State, San Diego State, Houston, SMU and UCF will join the Big East Conference in 2013, sources told

The announcement will be made Wednesday. The league will hold a 5 p.m. ET teleconference to formally discuss the new members. Realignment map: The new Big East

Boise State and San Diego State will join the Big East as football-only members, while Houston, SMU and UCF will join as all-sport members. Boise State is expected to put its non-football sports in the WAC, while San Diego State would place its non-football sports in the Big West, sources told

With the addition of those five schools -- minus the departures of West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Syracuse -- the Big East will have 10 football members.

With those five schools on board, Navy is expected to join as a football-only member -- possibly as soon as next week -- to boost the football membership to 11 schools.

The Big East hopes to add Air Force as its 12th football school -- as a football-only member -- but the Falcons still remain undecided.

If the Big East cannot get Air Force, Temple would be a likely candidate to become the Big East's 12th member.

Even with the new schools, sources also told that the Big East still plans to make West Virginia, Syracuse and Pittsburgh honor the league's 27-month exit requirement and stay in the league until June 30, 2014. Big East commissioner John Marinatto has said previously the league could have more than 12 football members and 16 basketball members during the 2013 season.

However, West Virginia AD Oliver Luck told two weeks ago the Mountaineers are planning to join the Big 12 next season.

"We're planning on all sports spending the 2012-13 academic year in the Big 12," Luck said. "The Big 12 folks haven't given us a [deadline] date. We're 100 percent focused on competing in the Big 12 and with this season closing, have time to prepare for next year.

"Our coaches are starting to think about Kansas State, Oklahoma and Texas and all the other schools we'll be facing in the Big 12 next year."

Both West Virginia and the Big East have filed lawsuits. West Virginia claims it should not have to honor the 27-month commitment, while the Big East contends West Virginia may not leave before 2014.

Syracuse and Pittsburgh have not filed a lawsuit to join the ACC early, but are monitoring the West Virginia situation. If WVU leaves before 2014, Syracuse and Pittsburgh would do the same, sources said.

Lateral move for Boise

Boise State is running sideways in its exhaustive pursuit of BCS glory.  How is leaving one mid-major conference in order to join another mid-major conference going to help Boise gain recognition it so desperately craves from the BCS?  Boise is deluding itself if it believes beating up on SMU, UCF or San Diego State is going to enhance its clout with BCS voters or boost its national prestige.  This is a chasing after the wind for Boise.  All of the BCS caliber programs (WVU, Syracuse and Pitt) saw what was coming and bolted for a REAL BCS conference before the Big East got watered down with mid-major BCS wannabes.  It is now Conference USA with a more western flavor.   Boise has lost any sense of who it is or where it comes from, while being left in a cloud of dust in its never-ending, hopeless pursuit of the BCS.

All you jackoffs who think non-BCS teams suck are responsible for this.  These crazy realignments wouldn't happen but for the non-BCS school being shut out of the money.

To Einstein -

Geez, both the Boise St. AD and the SDSU AD should have talked to U No Naa-Ting first!  Maybe it's not too late, I'll send and e-mail asking them to call the Pac-12 and tell them we're ready to be in the club too.

Nicely said. An where is the NCAA in all of this? God forbid a high schoold kid take a "free" ticket to go play in  a tournament somewhere, but hey it's OK for these money grubbing colleges to RUIN college sports. Feel sorry for the swimmers, gymnasts, soccer, volleyball, baseball, lacrosse, etc., etc. that don't have a say in any of this. Student athelete has become a meaningless term by those who pull the strings.

Boise State, 4 others to join Big East in 2013 Oliver Luck says WVU is starting to think about Kansas St, OU, and Texas??  Maybe they should also think about OK State, which beat ALL THREE of the teams he mentioned...don't think his omission of the Cowboys could be because his son's Stanford team is scheduled to play O-State in the Fiesta Bowl, do you?  Naaah, he couldn't be that crass, could he??

I wouldn't say people "hate" Boise State, as much as they are sick of hearing about them, and sick of people like you who wont shut up about them and beat the dead horse that they have beat this team and beat that team...  Do it consistently and you'll get the recognition you're looking for.
They are good, not great. They have some nice wins, very few. They cannot compete week in and week out with the powerhouses... then again who can? They are a nice program, but not National Championship caliber, and they probably never will be.

Boise State, 4 others to join Big East in 2013

The thing that bothers me about these ridiculous cross-country realignments is that these schools, and these conferences, are operating with a complete and reckless disregard for the STUDENT-athletes.  These players are looking to travel somewhere in the neighborhood of 40,000 miles while taking a full-time course load?  I hope parents will take the long view and see that signing with one of these money-hungry schools is not their kids' best interests.  In a perfect world, the schools that make such self-serving decisions with wanton disregard for the well-being of their student-athletes would quickly become the bottom of the barrel in terms of competition.

I think the BCS should give the Mountain West an Automatic bid, and take it from the Big East, just to make a point.  Utah, BYU, TCU, Boise, SDSU...clearly the conference CREATES winners!  They should be rewarded for that.

Don't you have to be invited to join a conference? The PAC-12 and Big 12 didn't invite Boise State.

You're an idiot. They beat the SEC East Champions in an impressive fashion, they have beat Oklahoma, they have beat Oregon. I will never understand the hate people have for Boise State.
