Boise State, San Diego State, Houston, SMU and UCF will join the Big East Conference in 2013, sources told CBSSports.com.

The announcement will be made Wednesday. The league will hold a 5 p.m. ET teleconference to formally discuss the new members. Realignment map: The new Big East

Boise State and San Diego State will join the Big East as football-only members, while Houston, SMU and UCF will join as all-sport members. Boise State is expected to put its non-football sports in the WAC, while San Diego State would place its non-football sports in the Big West, sources told CBSSports.com.

With the addition of those five schools -- minus the departures of West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Syracuse -- the Big East will have 10 football members.

With those five schools on board, Navy is expected to join as a football-only member -- possibly as soon as next week -- to boost the football membership to 11 schools.

The Big East hopes to add Air Force as its 12th football school -- as a football-only member -- but the Falcons still remain undecided.

If the Big East cannot get Air Force, Temple would be a likely candidate to become the Big East's 12th member.

Even with the new schools, sources also told CBSSports.com that the Big East still plans to make West Virginia, Syracuse and Pittsburgh honor the league's 27-month exit requirement and stay in the league until June 30, 2014. Big East commissioner John Marinatto has said previously the league could have more than 12 football members and 16 basketball members during the 2013 season.

However, West Virginia AD Oliver Luck told CBSSports.com two weeks ago the Mountaineers are planning to join the Big 12 next season.

"We're planning on all sports spending the 2012-13 academic year in the Big 12," Luck said. "The Big 12 folks haven't given us a [deadline] date. We're 100 percent focused on competing in the Big 12 and with this season closing, have time to prepare for next year.

"Our coaches are starting to think about Kansas State, Oklahoma and Texas and all the other schools we'll be facing in the Big 12 next year."

Both West Virginia and the Big East have filed lawsuits. West Virginia claims it should not have to honor the 27-month commitment, while the Big East contends West Virginia may not leave before 2014.

Syracuse and Pittsburgh have not filed a lawsuit to join the ACC early, but are monitoring the West Virginia situation. If WVU leaves before 2014, Syracuse and Pittsburgh would do the same, sources said.

McMurphy your column is a joke. Why don't you analyze all the conference movements over the past two years. PAC 12 did not improve by adding Colorado and Utah, ACC did not improve by adding Syracuse and Pitt football, BIG 12 did not improve by losing Nebraska and Texas A&M and then adding past SWC castoff TCU and West Virginia (who no one wanted for various reasons), SEC is not improving by getting Texas A&M (6-6) and Missouri (overrated). Big Ten is the only conference that actually added a tough team in Nebraska. Give the Big East some props for surviving the TV Revenue led (ESPN) drive to ruining conference affiliations and geographic rivalries.

It appears East encompases anything east of Alaska and Hawaii.

Idiots....why is nobody whining about Louisiana Tech in the WESTERN athletic conference?  they only reason Boise State is joining is because the Pac 12 and Big 12 are too cowardly to let them in to take over their weak conferences....

What a joke. Doesn't the NCAA and the university presidents see what the BCS is doing to college football?
SDSU in the Big East. Hell, they're closer to the Far East. Better change the name of the Big East to the Gargantuan East or the Big Anything East of the West Coast Conference. I feel sorry for SDSU when they have to play back-to-back road games at Syracuse and Conneticut. That's some serious frequent flyer miles.

Wow instead of the Big East making some sort of splash... they ended up taking a nose dive in the shallow end!!!

I didn't think it was possible to get weaker as a conference until I see these new addition. You can now pencil in an away game on the tacky blue turf of Boise State. How exciting that must be for opposing teams. I compare it to K-mart brand clothes!!!

This is all but laughable....Boise State is joining the Big East to gain access to the BCS.  Unfortunately for the Broncos, by the time they join the Big East, either (A) the Big East will no longer be an Automatic Qualifier, or (B) the BCS will have eliminated the "AQ" status.  So by the time Boise gets to the bus station, the bus will be gone!

This decision must have been made by the same folks that decided that blue turf was a wonderful idea.

Why is everyone making such a big deal about the name? It's not like Big East is the only one - Big 10 hasn't been 10 teams for almost 20 years and the 'World' Series consist of teams from only USA and Canada... Nothing new here. A name is just a name, it's a brand.

If the NCAA wants to stop this monkey business, it could require that half the road trips must be made by bus. Now boarding, Boise to Providence, with stops in Pocatello ...

What's the big deal?  The name might not make sense but the Big East was almost obliterated.  The Big East commish saw his league get raided by other conferences (again) so they grabbed some the best available non-BCS teams to preserve their huge paying jobs and to protect their automatic BCS game payday.  Those schools will also see a big bump in cash, and the Big East will be the only Big 6 conference that plays in Cal, Texas and Florida which might actually help with recruiting.  I think it's really smart.  Millions of dollars were on the line.  What else should they have done?  The distance for Boise isn't that big of deal.  Hawaii has a longer flight for every road game than the longest flight Boise will take.
