Boise State, 4 others to join Big East in 2013

Boise State, San Diego State, Houston, SMU and UCF will join the Big East Conference in 2013, sources told

The announcement will be made Wednesday. The league will hold a 5 p.m. ET teleconference to formally discuss the new members. Realignment map: The new Big East

Boise State and San Diego State will join the Big East as football-only members, while Houston, SMU and UCF will join as all-sport members. Boise State is expected to put its non-football sports in the WAC, while San Diego State would place its non-football sports in the Big West, sources told

With the addition of those five schools -- minus the departures of West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Syracuse -- the Big East will have 10 football members.

With those five schools on board, Navy is expected to join as a football-only member -- possibly as soon as next week -- to boost the football membership to 11 schools.

The Big East hopes to add Air Force as its 12th football school -- as a football-only member -- but the Falcons still remain undecided.

If the Big East cannot get Air Force, Temple would be a likely candidate to become the Big East's 12th member.

Even with the new schools, sources also told that the Big East still plans to make West Virginia, Syracuse and Pittsburgh honor the league's 27-month exit requirement and stay in the league until June 30, 2014. Big East commissioner John Marinatto has said previously the league could have more than 12 football members and 16 basketball members during the 2013 season.

However, West Virginia AD Oliver Luck told two weeks ago the Mountaineers are planning to join the Big 12 next season.

"We're planning on all sports spending the 2012-13 academic year in the Big 12," Luck said. "The Big 12 folks haven't given us a [deadline] date. We're 100 percent focused on competing in the Big 12 and with this season closing, have time to prepare for next year.

"Our coaches are starting to think about Kansas State, Oklahoma and Texas and all the other schools we'll be facing in the Big 12 next year."

Both West Virginia and the Big East have filed lawsuits. West Virginia claims it should not have to honor the 27-month commitment, while the Big East contends West Virginia may not leave before 2014.

Syracuse and Pittsburgh have not filed a lawsuit to join the ACC early, but are monitoring the West Virginia situation. If WVU leaves before 2014, Syracuse and Pittsburgh would do the same, sources said.

Boise State, 4 others to join Big East in 2013

Some of these comments are insane. Everyone is an expert. Boise State showed up on the college football radar a few years ago and they do have a ways to go to get the respect that some schools have. Boise St. is not "crying" about the selection process. When you have a good team and you beat the teams that are on your schedule what else can you do. They have done what they can by moving conferences in order to be more competitive and schedule better games. You can only control what you can control. It is sad that people say BSU can not beat these "big" teams but when they have a good year they don't match them up against a team that people are saying they can't beat. BSU is not saying they should have a shot at the National Championship but they do deserve to be matched up against a team with a better record than ASU.
BSU has been consistently good for years now. They do have a ways to go. To get respect from the rest of football they do need to close out there seasons and not loose to teams like Nevada and TCU. Nevada had a good team last year and TCU was unranked for the majority of this year but to be a top 10 team you need to beat them.
Lots of people are making comments about how the fans travel and how much money the schools make. I have never seen any stats or numbers on any of these things but do want to call people out when they are saying things like that. You are only repeating information that you have heard and don't know for yourself. Please pose a link where I can see these numbers if you know of one.

For everyone trashing the blue field.... It is different and it gets the school recognition. When you are a small school from a small market I consider it a great way to market your program. They have done a good job with this and there is proof because all of you know about it. I don't think it gives them any more of an advantage when they are at home. I would think that stadiums that hold 80,000 plus people would give more of advantage to a home team then the color of the field. Stop whining.
I don't know if moving to the Big East was the best move for Boise but time will tell. All I know is it appears that they are doing what they can to make the necessary moves to schedule better games.

I want to see competitive football with good matchups. I don't want to see any programs left out if they can compete.

FYI Boise, Idaho is in Mountain Time Zone not Pacific.
Coach Peterson is a true professional and hasn't spoken out against the BCS untill his recent comments. He has had coaching opportunities elsewhere at schools in conferences with automatic bids. I believe he did build the BSU program as head coach and when he was under the former head coach.

It is a broken system and by all of the comments that are being made I don't think many people disagree with that. You don't hear these complaints about other college sports. Change the system.

These conferences are getting stupid... Big East, with universities from the West??? Money is the only thing these schools care about... Forget about anything else. The next team to join the Big East... The Far West, Hawaii Rainbows??

We all know buying the tickets gets your team to the bigger games but why play the games, keep score, and rank the teams if the team that comes out on top is refused access because their fanbase does not travel. Why not name them Boise State @ New York City if its about market size. Shouldnt the results on the field actually mean something?

Boise State needs to stop crying about the selection process and do something about it, take the bowl game you were given and buy your allotment of tickets and go to the venue, that's what schools like WVU VT and Michigan have done for many many years and that's why they get the big bids.  For years WVU would finish 3rd or 4th in the Big East and get the Gator Bowl bid because of their fan base while a school that finished higher got a lower bowl because their fans stay home.   Buy the tickets g, go to the game, help the local economy, build a reputation.

BSU never got invited to the PAC12 or BIG12 or they would have went...both conf. are better than the Big East.  But BSU will be the prize team of the New Big East

Considering UCF is 2-9 vs ECU and draws 12,000 fewer fans with that so called massive TV market why did they get the invite to begin with ? ECU has beaten current Big East teams along with the 3 that will be leaving for greenier pastures. I would think UCF will be telling O'Learly to pack his bags and the Houston coach in all likelyhood will be bolting for a better job. Bottom line the league has just added 2 teams that will be in rebuilding mode plus an SMU program that can't draw.

You are not correct...Peterson has never said anything about the BCS until this year. So get your facts straight.

Virginia Tech only played 3 game to ranked teams (really only two teams...they play the tigers twice) and they lost those two games by 48 points.  It was a money thing period...Virgina Tech travels well but BSU has a better football team, who beat who last time they played?
