If you're looking for more evidence West Virginia is likely headed to the Big 12 this fall, the Mountaineers canceled their Sept. 8 game at Florida State, sources told

West Virginia originally had its 2012 schedule formatted for eight conference games as a Big East member - that's before TCU's decision to join the Big 12. But if the Mountaineers join the Big 12 this fall, they will have nine conference games and had to drop one contest.

Florida State released a statement Saturday morning confirming West Virginia's decision.

"We were informed in writing late Friday afternoon of West Virginia University’s intention to cancel its 2012 football game with Florida State University scheduled for Sept. 8 in Tallahassee," Florida State AD Randy Spetman said. "We are disappointed for our coaches, players and fans that this game will not take place as originally scheduled.

"We now face the challenge of completing our 2012 schedule just seven months before the start of the season. We will work quickly and diligently to fill the hole on our schedule and will communicate with our season ticket holders and fans as the process moves forward."

The Mountaineers must pay Florida State at least $500,000 because they cancelled the game less than 12 months before kickoff, The Orlando Sentinel reported.

Florida State's best option to replace West Virginia is one of the remaining seven Big East teams, all of which will need at least one game if WVU leaves for the Big 12. The most likely candidates to replace WVU on Florida State's schedule would be future ACC members Pitt or Syracuse.

More evidence WVU to Big 12? WVU cancels FSU game

Just a few observations from a Big 12 fan. To those who claim that the Big 12 is falling apart, I'd observe that at this time last year we were, but the conference finally rededicated itselt to holding together with what was left. Securing West Virginia will help solidify the conference for years to come as it will be the 10th member and our TV contracts will be fulfilled. Without West Virginia, the conference very well might have still fallen apart and sooner, rather than later. The Big 12's move to get West Virginia was, therefore, not predatory, but survivalist. One cannot blame a conference for trying to survive destruction. I am grateful to West Virginia for joining even if others view them with disdain.

To the poster who said that the courts will keep them in the Big East next year, you are wrong and do not understand contract law. Another poster addressed that issue very well. The only thing the courts can do is award damages for breaking a contract if they decide that West Virginia, and not the Big East, was the first to break the contract. West Virginia will play in the Big 12 next year.

To those posters who claim that West Virginia is running from a potential drubbibg and is afraid of Florida State; get real. You're just blowing off steam. They welcome the competition and if you really think that the Big 12 offers weaker competition from top to bottom than Florida State and the rest of the ACC, then you have been blinded by conference loyalties.

To the poster who asked how West Virginia's exit fees will be paid if they lose the court battle, since the addition of West Virginia will enable the Big 12 to maintain its TV contracts and may very well have saved to conference's life, there is little doubt in my mind the conference will help pay West Virginia's damages if the courts rule against West Virginia.

I know the emotions on this issue are high and raw, but these times are in flux and neither the Big 12 nor West Virginia started them, they are both simply trying to cope as best as they can.

To All.  To paraphrase the last lines in the original King Kong movie,  "It......, It was Beauty Killed the Beast."",  "It was not WVU (or even the mismanagement of the league) that killed the (Big) East, It was ACC that killed the 'East.".  It was the ACC that "Pearl Harbored" college football by its original "raid" of the Big East.  The last raid of Pitt and Syracuse was just a result of the first raid.  Ironically, ACC football has never been strong after that first raid.  The ACC propoganda machine will continue to promote historical teams as Florida State and Miami and they, along with Clemson, Virginia Tech, and whomever, will continue to start the season highly rated, only to fail miserably when playing prominent foes.  Your (the ACC) hex will continue with being overrated and being overhyped.  It will be difficult for "Mother Nature" to exceed the 70 pt. trouncing of your "champion" in the Orange Bowl, but beware of other "surprises" in store for you.

I did get a good laugh from your comments.  This is not to accomodate the Mountaineers leaving.  The Mountaineers are leaving.  It was an attempt to create an outlet for all concerned to preclude the looming legal disaster for all concerned.  The thesis is that you add, not subtract, to create accomodation and financial assurance.  And, if all participants could or would get their heads out of the stinking cesspool of intransigence, it would work.
That being said, you hit the nail on the head with your comment "especially the Big East".  If you have a contract with IBM and chose to leave, they can not stop you.  They can penalize you financially.  Indentured Servitude went out even before Indentured Marriage. In other words, approximately 3 years of continuing to work within the Big East after you resign from the Big East is not enforcable, and, at a high enough court level, would be deemed unenforcable.  Also, WVU is wholely owned by the State of West Virgiinia and not a separate entity to which simple contract law would apply.  No court in Rhode Island can tell the state of West Virginia what they can and can not do.
I appreciate the Big East, I do not appreciate the malfeasance of its management.  And, in a gentle sense, I take your comments to mean basically, "You can not and could not get all parties to agree to such a happening, so why state it?"
