If you're looking for more evidence West Virginia is likely headed to the Big 12 this fall, the Mountaineers canceled their Sept. 8 game at Florida State, sources told CBSSports.com.

West Virginia originally had its 2012 schedule formatted for eight conference games as a Big East member - that's before TCU's decision to join the Big 12. But if the Mountaineers join the Big 12 this fall, they will have nine conference games and had to drop one contest.

Florida State released a statement Saturday morning confirming West Virginia's decision.

"We were informed in writing late Friday afternoon of West Virginia University’s intention to cancel its 2012 football game with Florida State University scheduled for Sept. 8 in Tallahassee," Florida State AD Randy Spetman said. "We are disappointed for our coaches, players and fans that this game will not take place as originally scheduled.

"We now face the challenge of completing our 2012 schedule just seven months before the start of the season. We will work quickly and diligently to fill the hole on our schedule and will communicate with our season ticket holders and fans as the process moves forward."

The Mountaineers must pay Florida State at least $500,000 because they cancelled the game less than 12 months before kickoff, The Orlando Sentinel reported.

Florida State's best option to replace West Virginia is one of the remaining seven Big East teams, all of which will need at least one game if WVU leaves for the Big 12. The most likely candidates to replace WVU on Florida State's schedule would be future ACC members Pitt or Syracuse.

@AaronF - I could take a guess at what the F at the end of your name stands for, but I won't go there.  I'm sure there are plenty of Sleezey Hillbilly Scum in NJ - they're everywhere, and you're proof of that with your stupida-- comments.  Are you just angry because WVU had the smarts to leave the Big Least, and the balls to do what it takes to make it happen this year?  Or are you just angry because your Scarlet Knights are going back into the crapper where they belong now that Schiano has left?  Rutgers may be a fine academic institution, but athletics... seriously dude, get a clue!

I dont blame WVU. They were stomped by FSU twice when FSU was a terrible team. FSU is finally good again, no one should want to play them.

cutty240, I hope you're not actually a WVU fan.  However, if you are, please stop posting in public forums...stick to private MySpace chats with your friends for the sake of us all Wink

As for this game - I would love to see WVU play FSU rather than Marshall.  However, for political and financial reasons that just isn't possible this year.  It has 0 to do with WVU being scared to play tough competition, we just had a home-and-home with LSU...a team that has been far superior to FSU the past 10 years.  As many others have pointed out, WVU needs a certain number of home games and now that they know their 2012 B12 schedule, they likely had no choice but to drop the FSU game.

On the expansion topic, I can understand why some people will argue that WVU should recieve more flak for how they have handled things.  I wouldn't say I'm ashamed, but I'm not exactly proud either.  The reality is, if you want to find a culprit in the whole expansion mess you need look no further than the ACC and (to a lesser extent) ESPN.  Had the ACC not taken 3 teams from the BE in the early 2000s so they could play a CCG, the BE would still be intact, the ACC intact, and there would not be as strong a driving force for conferences to get more teams.  Yes the SEC added 2 teams from the B12 this year, but I don't know that they would have done that had the ACC not decided to steal from other conferences several years ago.

People are also right in saying that WVU's hasty exit has everything to do with keeping 9 other institutions (the current B12) from essentially having a ruined season of CFB.  The TV contract would be voided costing them tons of money and as Horns said, likely cuasing the teams to scatter.  WVU leaving the BE, while it is the highest profile school there over the past decade and only one of 3 to bring any real legitimacy to the conference (Pitt,Cuse, and UL being the others), is not killing the BE by any means.  Those schools won't have to change their TV contract, they will still qualify for a BCS bid with 7 teams, and the only real negative for them is that they must now find another game - but they have had since October to do that.  For people who want to argue that it hurts TV negotiations, that is just plain ignorance.  WVU was leaving along with Cuse/Pitt regardless, Fox/ESPN/CBS were all well aware of this and would have taken it into account.  Even if they had all 3 for the first year of the TV contract, why would the networks pay extra to have 1 year of those teams followed by years without any team drawing much national attention.

West Virginia is a public school, funded with public money. I wonder who pays the half million dollar bill? The Big 12? Wealthy boosters of the football program? West Virgnia taxpayers?

West Vagina is trading half a million $$ for a highly probable loss. I can't blame them, just hope the Noles can find a respectable replacement.

It warms my heart to see that WVU athletics means so much to so many non-fans of WVU.  The fact you nitwits are on here railing against WVU demonstrates it.  Good to see.

Its pretty simple why they chose this game and its not cowards, scared or money.  its that it was the only away game.  WVU is only going to get four home and five away games in the Big 12 next year.  thus the home OOC games were off the table or they woudl be down to five home games.

And those that say doe snto a contarct mean anything.. I t does and it has terms as to what they owe if cancelled within 12 months.

Coward?

On the contrary, whomever is making these decisions at West Virginia has a pair and that is refreshing to see rather some jerk who is afraid of their own shadow.

I personally wish that the Big East would give it up.  Put this in personal terms and what you have is a companion who doesn't want to be with you and who publicly disrespects you.  Why would anybody want to stay in that relationship?

What makes you ACC twats think WVU is afraid to play any of your 2nd tier teams?  We just hammered your champ for 70 points in the Orange Bowl and we have scheduled good non-con games over the past few years with LSU and Auburn.  We're just setting things up for our move to the Big 12, that's all.
