More evidence WVU to Big 12? WVU cancels FSU game

If you're looking for more evidence West Virginia is likely headed to the Big 12 this fall, the Mountaineers canceled their Sept. 8 game at Florida State, sources told CBSSports.com.

West Virginia originally had its 2012 schedule formatted for eight conference games as a Big East member - that's before TCU's decision to join the Big 12. But if the Mountaineers join the Big 12 this fall, they will have nine conference games and had to drop one contest.

Florida State released a statement Saturday morning confirming West Virginia's decision.

"We were informed in writing late Friday afternoon of West Virginia University’s intention to cancel its 2012 football game with Florida State University scheduled for Sept. 8 in Tallahassee," Florida State AD Randy Spetman said. "We are disappointed for our coaches, players and fans that this game will not take place as originally scheduled.

"We now face the challenge of completing our 2012 schedule just seven months before the start of the season. We will work quickly and diligently to fill the hole on our schedule and will communicate with our season ticket holders and fans as the process moves forward."

The Mountaineers must pay Florida State at least $500,000 because they cancelled the game less than 12 months before kickoff, The Orlando Sentinel reported.

Florida State's best option to replace West Virginia is one of the remaining seven Big East teams, all of which will need at least one game if WVU leaves for the Big 12. The most likely candidates to replace WVU on Florida State's schedule would be future ACC members Pitt or Syracuse.

More evidence WVU to Big 12? WVU cancels FSU game

Money drives everything in college football--good or bad.

It is probably as simple as trying to get 7 games at home for the season---which means 2 to 3 million into the coffers for an extra home game, regardless of who they play (if they typically sell out). I don't followi West Virginia football that closely, but that is a decision many (not all) major football programs make (7 home games out of 12) when lining up their schedule.

Yes they would get more noteriety for playing FSU, but even if they end up with a Sun Belt opponent at home instead, the money is more important to the atheletic department.

If WVU has seen the proposed Big 12 schedule and it has 4 home games in conference, they would need all three non-conference games at home to get to 7. To do that, you often have to schedule cupcakes-- which sucks if you're a fan.

Until this realignment crap stabilizes, this "backing out"  at the last minute is going to become more prevalent.

More evidence WVU to Big 12? WVU cancels FSU game

For those who have followed this entire fiasco of conference realignment, it is really hard to call out WVU.  The truth is numerous AD's and conferences have acted in incredibly self-serving ways.  WVU just happens to be stuck.  The Big 12 needs WVU on their schedule in order to maintain their TV contract.  And, that is what this is really about isn't it?  TV revenue.  That is what has really driven all of this movement between conferences.  Did the Big East fail in it's ability to protect their football playing schools?  I don't know.  Maybe we should ask BC, VT, Miami, Pitt, Syracuse, and TCU.  The cancellation of one game is a small thing in a much BIGGER STINK, which has been conferences preying on each other.  Every school and conference president should hang their heads in shame, not just WVU.

More evidence WVU to Big 12? WVU cancels FSU game

There is no doubt that WVU will matriculate to the Big 12 for football next year, despite geographically coming from the land of misfits. As a parting gift, they are ditching a game that would bring them national exposure and probably a loss, in favor of bringing a guaranteed win against yet another pansy out of conference team. WVU fans and administration will try to tout their schedule as one of the toughest in the country, but who is buying that.

Last year, Coach Holgorsen belittled the fan base for not supporting his team against out of conference opponents. It will get worse this year because the competition will be worse. That said, they did play a really tough coastal carolina squad and a few other top one hundred programs, so let's cut them a break.  WVU needed the game against FSU to help them get the exposure they need to recruit against the Big 12 powerhouse teams. Unfortunately, their athletic director is choosing an easy win against an inferior opponent, over a quality win against an opponent on equal footing.

Mr. Luck is thinking that if he can get the three automatic out of conference wins, he might be able to get three conference wins and be bowl eligible during the Mountaineers first year in the Big 12. Nothing like trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the Mountaineer faithful. The fans in West Virginia, although rabid, are not so dumb. Again, the fan base loses in West Virginia and they should be used to that by now. Good job Mr. AD, good job.

More evidence WVU to Big 12? WVU cancels FSU game

Since when can a team unilaterally cancel a scheduled game less than 8 months from the date of the game? So what is FSU supposed to do now, schedule a game versus some Division 1 or 2 school? FSB schedules are booked 4 - 5 years in advance to guantee strength of schedule and revenue etc. FSU just let them bail out? Do contracts mean anything in sports anymore? Maybe Appalachian State is available for FSU.

More evidence WVU to Big 12? WVU cancels FSU game

goredsbrian, it's funny how FSU fans are mad because they need a team like WVU on their schedule.  However, WVU isn't mad because they don't need a team like FSU on their schedule.  Besides, WVU probably needs Sept 8 for a Big XII game, but you are stupid, so you probably didn't consider that.
