Finally, West Virginia is officially headed to the Big 12.

The Big East Conference announced Tuesday that West Virginia's membership had been "terminated" and it was no longer a league member after June 30. The Mountaineers will join the Big 12 for the 2012-13 academic season.

"Our membership in the Big 12 offers WVU significant advantages," West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck said in a statement. "The Big 12 is a strong and vibrant conference academically and athletically. We look forward to the potential academic and athletic partnerships and financial opportunities that membership in the Big 12 offers."

Sources told CBSSports.com that the Big East will receive $20 million from West Virginia, which is responsible for $10 million. The Big 12 is "loaning" West Virginia the remaining $10 million, but the school will only be responsible for paying back about half of that amount.

Luck said the agreement prohibits discussion of the settlement, but that no state or taxpayer funds, tuition or academic support monies will be used. Any settlement funding transferred will come from private sources and independently generated athletic revenues, Luck said.

Last week, CBSSports.com reported West Virginia and the Big East reached a verbal settlement that would pay the Big East $20 million.

"West Virginia University has acknowledged and agreed that the Court in Monongalia County, WVa., will enter a judgment that the Big East Conference Bylaws are valid and enforceable, and will dismiss with prejudice all of West Virginia’s claims against the Conference," Big East commissioner John Marinatto said in a statement.

With West Virginia gone, the Big East currently has seven football members for the 2012 season. However, the league is trying to get Boise State to join a year early, sources told CBSSports.com. If the Big East is not able to find a replacement for West Virginia this fall, the remaining seven league members would have to scramble to find a 12th game.

Pittsburgh and Syracuse, which are headed to the ACC, will not try to leave the Big East this summer, sources told CBSSports.com. However, both schools will attempt to negotiate deals to allow them to join the ACC a year early in 2013.

West Virginia President Jim Clements said the school's Big 12 membership "is an investment in WVU's future. We're looking forward to the tremendous opportunities it presents – all across our university."

The Mountaineers were one of the Big East charter members in 1991 when the league formed its football conference.

Luck said the settlement with the Big East "closes a chapter and opens a new one filled with exciting possibilities for WVU’s future.  I’ve heard from Mountaineer fans across the country who have made it very clear that they are proud and honored to be heading into the Big 12.”

Great day for WVU, but a sad day for the Big East, the Backyard Brawl fans, and college football in general......such a shame that money had to completely ruin one of the last legitimate football organizations.

@ STB IRISH:
I understand that you have never been a fan of the Big 12, but I am happy to see that you are willing to try to change your mind. I don't think you'll be here too long before you see that this is a really great conference that will really grow on you. And it's not just a football conference that puts other teams together just for show. As it happens, the Big 12 has won more National Championships in all sports combined than any other conference in America. So, as far as a well-balanced, all-sports conference, welcome the the best conference in the land - by far.

I LIVE ON THE WEST COAST AND CANNOT FULLY UNDERSTAND THE BREAKUP OF A "GREAT" BIG EAST BASKETBALL CONF FOR WHAT APPEARS TO BE FOOTBALL MEDIA MONEY......I CONTEND THAT UPITT, WVA, AND CUSE HAVE HAD BETTER BASKETBALL PROGRAMS OVER THE PAST DECADE THAN FOOTBALL PROGRAMS......WHILE I WOULD NEVER WATCH A BE FB GAME, I WOULD GO OUT OF MY WAY TO WATCH A BE BBALL GAME.....BESIDES THE SCHOOLS LEAVING THE BE FOR GREENER PASTURES, IT APPEARS THE NEXT WINEERS WILL BE DEPAUL AND PROVIDENCE BBALL WHICH WILL NO LONGER BE THE DOORMATS OF BE BBALL......I THINK BSU, SDSU, UH, AND SMU ARE MAKING BIG MISTAKES BY THINKING THEY CAN SAVE THE BE FROM DESTRUCTION....

Lawsuit aside, I'm kind of disappointed WVU is leaving the Big East.  With the addition of Boise State in football the Big East will, more than likely, keep their automatic BCS qualifying status.  WVU could have remained the big fish in a little pond and I liked that.  Plus, I've never been a fan of the Big 12 but I guess I'll have to change that now.  I guess it's better than joining the ACC.  Too bad the SEC didn't let us in, that was the only conference I was hoping for us to jump too.

Last thing, I'm also a big Notre Dame fan and I always looked forward to seeing WVU and ND go at it in basketball but now that will be a thing of the past. College sports have always been my favorite, along with Steeler football, but the greediness for money is starting to ruin things for me.

Let's Go Mountaineers.

When it comes to national reputations, West Virginia isn't exactly the sunshine state.  This furthers the reputation of the state and the school.  Squirming out of the Big East is a black mark as dark as the cole that comes out of your mines.

Great that this is finally official, Kudos to the BigEast for doing the right thing, WVU was leaving regardless but this way relationships can still be there for possible ooc games in the future between BE and B12, best wishes for the remaining programs and the new ones in the BigEast. WVU will have to get deeper to be where we need to be to contend in the B12 year in year out but the commitment is there and it will happen, IMO the same can be said of TCU, two VERY good additions for the B12.     &
